John Conolly Livestream Concert, Thursday, June 17th; 2:30pm John Conolly honed his songwriting around the fish docks of Grimsby, a once bustling fishing port perched at the mouth of England’s Humber River. As he watched the fishing fleet suffer the demise of a oncethriving industry, he chronicled the stories of the workers. Fiddlers’ Green, written in 1964, has become entrenched in the canon of maritime music, along with a number of his other songs: Punch and Judy Man, Trawling Trade, The Widowmaker—the list is long. Conolly performs with warmth, good humor and lilting on and melodeon. The show will start at 2:30pm EDT Eastern U.S. time [7:30 U.K. time] and will run approximately 50 minutes. Contribution $10, more if you can, less if you can't. Tickets are available at https://fmsnyconolly.eventbrite.com This is a partnership effort between 5 folk organizations (Folk Music Society of New York, Inc, Old Songs, Inc, Folksong Society of Greater Washington, Folk Song Society of Greater Boston, and Branford FMS) and Jeanie Meneely & Rob Van Sante (Falcon Audio Visual Arts Studio) livestreamed from Whitby, UK.

“June is busting out all over”—Sorry, couldn’t resist the song from Oklahoma! We are going to have our first inperson event on Governors Island—the Porch Stomp. Some of us were actually there a few years ago, before Covid. It will be all out doors. You must make ferry reservations. See pgs 3, 5 & 6 for details. We are still doing things virtually which include the Seaport Chantey Sing, the Staten Island Shanty Sing, and our fascinating Board of Directors meeting. The Sunnyside Singers Club will continue to meet virtually on Wednesday nights. In addition, they will also be meeting in person on Thursday nights. See page 2 for details. We have sad news. Bob (Robert Witte) passed away in February. He was a long time member who was an active participant in our events. He had moved to Maine and loved the community of Waldoboro. See more on page 4.

by Ruth Lipman Sue Tobiason sent in the following item: “I'm home from the hospital and rehab. On March 12, I had a cervical laminectomy at the Allen Hospital. In the words of my neurologist, the surgery was necessary because my cervical spine was "smooshed". I spent a month in rehab, then came home with nursing, physical therapy, and home health aides who have been wonderful in helping me with chores and getting me the things I need. I was fortunate to be able to get vaccinated in rehab, so that I didn't have to worry about venturing out or standing in a long line when I returned home.” Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Sue! Bob was a graduate of New Rochelle High School in New Rochelle, NY, received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Cornell University and a Master’s Degree in Marine Biology from New York University. Bob was a veteran of the US Army and served during the 1960’s as an environmental engineer. For more than 20 years he was employed as a Marine Biologist for the Environmental Protection Agency based out of the area. His love and respect for nature and the environment was a cornerstone of the way he lived his life. He spent a number of years working on the Clearwater sailing vessel working to clean up the Hudson River in New York. He moved to Waldoboro, Maine in 2000. A lover of folk music, storytelling, and literature of every kind, Bob spent many hours with friends enjoying this passion. As a longtime member of the Folk Music Society of New York, Bob was passionate about music and had great admiration for those who shared their voices whether in harmony or not. A good joke or a bad one, he was always up for a conversation and a laugh to be shared with others. He was passionate about political causes and was generous in his support of those that he believed in. Clarice Kjerulff Bob also left a many books and albums behind. His nephew, Bryan Lane, has a catalogued list of his Folk Books and of his Albums, which he has left to the FMSNY. Contact Eileen at 7186726399 if you are interested and she will send you the lists. Bob hoped that people would give a donation to the club for these items. See hps://www.porchstomp.com/ porchstomp2020 for info. Performers on the FMSNY porch (in alphabecal order) are: Pamela Jean Agaloos, a singer based in New York who has been singing tradional tunes in the city for the last seven years. Her unique style and interpretaon of tradional music relies on the connecons she makes with musicians she's collaborated with – storytellers, arsts, and other folk musicians – in the session and folk scenes. Pamela will be accompanied by Ma Diaz and Mahew Chrisan. The Iona Sco sh Session, a home session for Pamela, is a group of rotang musicians who play tradional Sco sh tunes at the Iona Bar in Williamsburg. Doreen Hayden d'Amico performs tradional and and is delighted to sing with others in ghtly woven harmonies. She was a member of Soldier's Fancy, a five‐part harmony group whose repertoire reflected the experiences of women today and in days gone by. She was also a long me member of the West Side Singers, a chorus of twenty voices singing Robert Burns to Mozart. She is currently a regular member of the Sunnyside Singers and an occasional addion to the Mountain Maidens. Lafayee Ma hews & Jules Peiperl Lafayee (he/him) and Jules (they/them) have been singing together since 2013. They made their way to New York City in 2017 and have been popping up around the folk music community ever since. They are dedicated to honoring the tradion of the songs they sing while making the folk community a more inclusive and welcoming space for all people. Their repertoire includes buzzy English harmonies, Appalachian ballads, sea chanteys, and any song that can remotely be construed as queer. Nancy and Bob Montgomery have been singing together since the day they met. Their warm harmonies and guitar and harmonica accompaniment give them a folk sound, but they draw on a wide variety of material ‐ from tradional and contemporary folk and country to classic rock & original songs. Over the years they have played on porches & other venues from Lake Erie & the Catskills to Brooklyn & Manhaan theaters. Expect to hear lile‐known gems from well‐known singers. Marie Mularczyk, Candice Baranello & Lorraine Berger. Three dynamic voices blended in splendid ancient and modern harmonies that will li your spirit, excite your senses and warm your heart. They sing ballads, folk songs, Medieval, Irish Tradional music, love songs, country and gospel songs including themes of social jusce to the accompaniment of , , dulcimer, bouzouki, dumbec, spoon, castanets and lots of percussion instruments including washboard. They met at Swing, The Teapot Irish Pub in Floral Park and there was instant magic, harmony, and camaraderie. Marie plays just about every string and percussion instrument (guitar, banjo, mandolin, dulcimer, Irish Bouzouki, dumbec, bones, and spoons) and sings Brish and American folksongs and Jewish music. continued next page 5 continued from previous page Kae Naplatarski is a beaufully sensive interpreter of folk songs and ballads. She sings an assortment of folk songs, some old, some new, and some to sing along to. She will be accompanied on guitar and voice by Marie Mularczyk and the Sunnyside Singers.

The New York Packet, represented here by Deirdre Murtha (of The Johnson Girls), Lafayee Mahews, and Alan Short, is the resident music group of the Chantey Sings at South Street Seaport in Lower Manhaan, keeping NY's marime history and heritage alive. The Folk Music Society of N.Y. co‐sponsors events with the South Street Seaport.

Debbie Rich and Ron Pecan are two local arsts who have been singing and playing tradional and old‐me music together for many years. They include fiddle tunes, gospel, blues, topical, work, marime, protest, ballads, love and kids' songs. Some came from centuries ago, where we do not know who wrote them and have been passed down orally, and oen altered along the way. Some come from contemporary writers from the mid‐20th century up to today. All are the sounds of the people. Steve Suffet is best described as an old‐fashioned folksinger who has been performing at clubs, coffee houses, fesvals, folk music weekends, and other venues since 1963. His repertoire comprises an eclecc mix of tradional folk songs, songs by tradion‐based folk arst such as Jean Ritchie and , and songs that he has wrien himself in tradional styles. Website: hps://stevesuffet.com Robbie Wedeen is a folk singer /songwriter who performs folk, gospel, country, blues, bluegrass, , tradional, ballads, country, contemporary, and original repertoire with guitar, autoharp and banjo accompaniment. She is a past member of Joyful Noise with Marie Mularczyk, Linda Prager, Judy Meiselman — four women in harmony. Is your membership expiring?
