Biodiversitas 21: 2206-2215. The Lalitavistara sutra is one of the central texts in the Mahayana tradition and it describes the life of the Buddha. This sutra has been carved in a good detail into 120 relief panels. These reliefs showed many plant figures that have often been carved in proper shape, so that made it possible for identification. The identification results showed that there were at least 63 species of plants in the Lalitavistara relief at Borobudur and these more various than species mentioned in the Lalitavistara sutra. Some species even only be found on reliefs but not in the text. These findings have indicated several important points; (i). the ancient Javanese community at that time already had a high awareness of the plant diversity, (ii). the plant figures as component in building atmosphere/background have been used by the carver as an opportunity for improvisation, (iii). the plant reliefs in Borobudur can be seen to reflect the surrounding plant diversity at the time, and (iv). the identification of plant reliefs in Borobudur can be used as an approach to understand the perspective of an ancient Javanese community on the importance of plant diversity. This study attempted to improve propagation from explant to manipulate essential jasmine oil production. Modified Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium, produced from carbohydrate precursor compounds (MS + 20 % fructose, MS + 20 % glucose and MS + 20 % sucrose), was used to produce explants from young leaves and calluses. Essential oil (benzyl acetate and jasmine) content was highest in jasmine explant calluses grown on MS + 20 % sucrose. The study recorded about 40 medicinal plants (including trees, shrubs, herbs and climbers) across different sacred groves and their use for human welfare. The local people were consulted to know about the use of different medicinal plants and the existing management strategy. The study suggested the promotion of medicinal plant conservation through effective capacity building activities for the sacred grove committee members and local people to realize the goals of sustainability. The results of the research concluded that (1) Gangsir Mountain Temple is one of the cultural heritage remains of Medang KamulanKingdom, a continuation of the Ancient Mataram. The temple is located in Beji, Pasuruan, (2) the temple architecture can be concluded as a combination of Central and East Javanese styles but the Gangsir Mountain Temple is more inclined to the Ancient Mataram style. SETHURAMAN1,2* 1Centre for Nanotechnology and Advanced Biomaterials, 2School of Chemical and Biotechnology, 3Centre for Advanced Research in Indian System of Medicine, Sastra University, Thanjavur‑613 401, India Nagarajan, et al.: Science of Preparation of Naga Bhasma Naga bhasma is one of the herbo-metallic preparations used in Ayurveda, a traditional Indian System of Medicine. The preparation of Naga bhasma involves thermal treatment of ‘Naga’ (metallic lead) in a series of quenching liquids, followed by reaction with realgar and herbal constituents, before calcination to prepare a fine product. We have analysed the intermediates obtained during different stages of preparation to understand the relevance and importance of different steps involved in the preparation. Our results show that ‘Sodhana’ (purification process) removes heavy metals other than lead, apart from making it soft and amenable for trituration. The use of powders of tamarind bark and peepal bark maintains the oxidation state of lead in Jarita Naga (lead oxide) as Pb2+. The repeated calcination steps result in the formation of nano-crystalline lead sulphide, the main chemical species present in Naga bhasma.
