J]RCAS International Symposium Series No. 3: 27-38 Session 1-3 27 Collection and Evaluation of Under-Utilized Tropical and Subtropical Fruit Tree Genetic Resources in Malaysia WONG, Kai Choo' Abstract Fruit tree genetic resources in Malaysia consist of cultivated and wild species. The cul tivated fruit trees number more than 100 species of both indigenous and introduced species. Among these fruits, some are popular and are widely cultivated throughout the country while others are less known and grown in small localized areas. The latter are the under-utilized fruit species. Apart from these cultivated fruits, there is also in the Malaysian natural forest a diversity of wild fruit tree species which produce edible fruits but are relatively unknown and unutilized. Many of the under-utilized and unutilized fruit species are known to show economic potential. Collection and evaluation of some of these fruit tree genetic resources have been carried out. These materials are assessed for their potential as new fruit trees, as sources of rootstocks for grafting and also as sources of germplasm for breeding to improve the present cultivated fruit species. Some of these potential fruit tree species within the gen era Artocarpus, Baccaurea, Canarium, Dimocarpus, Dialium, Durio, Garcinia, Litsea, Mangif era, Nephelium, Sa/acca, and Syzygium are highlighted. Introduction Malaysian fruit tree genetic resources comprise both cultivated and wild species. There are more than 100 cultivated fruit species of both major and minor fruit crops. Each category includes indigenous as well as introduced species. The major cultivated fruit crops are well known and are commonly grown throughout the country. -

They are aware of the space surrounding them. They are capable of self and non-self recognition and can take defined actions to mitigate and control diverse environmental stimuli. Ancient sages, who lived in an environment of trees and mountains perceived this truth of plants, precisely choose a few among them for their meditation, enlightenment and also actively promoted conservation of them. N,N-DMT is a psychoactive drug related with mysticism is present in both plants and humans. The study of plants associated with faith and tradition is known as Divine Botany. Lord Buddha was under Saraca asoca (Roxb.) De Wilde, Ficus religiosa (L.) and Shorea robusta (Gaertn.f.) during birth, enlightenment and liberation respectively. ‘Kshudraka Nikaya’ is a collection of minor Buddhist discourses which contains a book by name Buddhavamsha. It was translated into English as ‘The Great Chronicle of Buddhas’ by Ven. Bhadanta Vicittasarabhivamsa in 1992. Trees of enlightenment were termed as Wisdom trees. ‘The Great Chronicle of Buddhas’ listed wisdom trees of 25 past Buddha’s and future Maitreya Buddha. Wisdom trees of Tanhankara Buddha, Medhankara Buddha and Sharanamkara Buddha Bhagavan were not quoted in Buddhavamsha. -

This study was conducted to determine the effect of soil properties on the association of tree communities within three distinct habitats in a semi-deciduous forest in Perlis State Park (PSP), Perlis. Eighteen plots of 40 × 60 m (0.24 ha each) with sampling areas of 1.92 ha (8 plots) in Setul Formation, 0.96 ha (4 plots) in Granite and 1.44 ha (6 plots) in Kubang Pasu Formation (totalling 4.32 ha) were established at the PSP. All trees with 5.0 cm and above diameter at breast height (dbh) were enumerated, while the top soil samples were collected from each plot for soil analyses. A total of 412 tree species, 207 genera, and 68 families were recorded; 270 tree species from 152 genera and 57 families in the Setul forest; 204 tree species of 130 genera and 50 families in the Granite forest; and 109 tree species from 76 genera and 31 families in the Kubang Pasu forest. -

The habitat based lists include a range of species that are appropriate to be planted in the catchment. It is recommended site specific expert advice be sought before finalising species lists for particular projects. Lamellorthoceratid cephalopods in the cold waters of southwestern Gondwana: Evidences from the Lower Devonian of Argentina. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 65 (2): 305–312. Based on three specimens assigned to Arthrophyllum sp., the family Lamellorthoceratidae is reported from the Lower Devonian Talacasto Formation in the Precordillera Basin, central western Argentina. These Devonian cephalopods have been known only from low to mid palaeolatitudes and its presence in the cold water settings of southwestern Gondwana is notable. A nektonic mode of life, not strictly demersal but eventually pelagic, with a horizontal orientation of the conch is proposed for adults lamellorthoceratids, whereas a planktonic habit is suggested for juvenile individuals. These features would had allow their arrival to this southern basin, explaining their unusual presence in the Malvinokaffric Realm, and reinforcing the need of re-evaluate the distribution pattern of several groups of cephalopods.
