In His Book, Night, Elie Wiesel Tells the Story of Being Forced to Watch A

Presider: Fr. James Cassidy In his book, , Elie Wiesel tells the story of being forced to watch a young boy hang on We are blessed with wonderful musi- a gallows in the Auschwitz concentration camp. He writes about the conversation as he and cians here at St. Joan of Arc. Today our other prisoners witness this horror. “Behind me, I heard the same man asking, ‘For God's song leaders Deb Harley, Rachael sake, where is God?’" Kroog and Terrie Coats will share two special songs during this Sunday’s Wiesel goes on to write, “And from within me, I heard a voice answer: ‘Where He is? This is liturgy. Thank you as always!! where -- hanging here from this gallows.’”

This observation has been at the center of theological discussion since the end of WWII. How could the so called great Western Christian nations have committed such great atrocities and engaged in so much without coming to peace? Had Christianity been a showy farce?

Sad to say, the discussion seems to have ceased, and we are once again fighting over who is right and wrong or who holds power rightly. And as usual, people become the pawns in the The Sunday Morning Registration and fundamentalists’ need for correct thinking. Information Office is located in the Par- ish Center. In the office you may register To some in the Church the big questions seem to be: Are you using pottery chalices or to become a SJA parishioner, get pro- metal? How big is your cape at Mass? Are you pronouncing your prayers properly? Did gram information, sign up for a program, you forget something? And, as we have seen locally (until recently): How can I get my red and register to volunteer. The office is hat as quickly as possible by following rules as closely as possible? open after both of our Sunday morning liturgies. However, through our observation, we see another question which is still out there: “Why this continual violence against each other?” And given the recognition that each of the victims is a divine being - a God carrier, the larger question becomes not only “Where is God?”, but also, “Where are we?”

Today’s parable of the good Samaritan shows us the answer - the action to take. But then, how do we reach the fundamentalists of all sects and denominations - those who continue to confuse their prejudices for dogma and claim they speak for God - in time to save humanity?

Elie Wiesel died last week. He chronicled the Shoah, the , and at the heart of his message was remembrance. When we forget the horror of the past, the silly ostraca of religion can become more important than humanity itself. ! Never forget!
