Concepts like Torah, Talmud, Yom Kippur, Rosh Hashana, Pesach, Sukkot or Shabbat had little or no resonance for me. Most Jews considered themselves as sophisticated and highly educated Soviet citizens, but at the same time, fully aware of antisemitism and being unable to express their Jewish identity. We also understood that studying hard and acquiring knowledge was the only way to circumvent the authoritarian regime and achieve professional success. For more than 70 long years, beginning after the Russian Revolution of 1917, the Jews of the USSR found themselves facing the inability to live a full Jewish life. For decades, Jewish education, Jewish languages, history and culture, were subject to various degrees of oppression; many synagogues, schools and cultural institutions ceased to function. Then came the catastrophe of the Second World War bringing in its wake, the destruction in the Holocaust – the Shoah – of six million Jews across Europe, one and a half million of them in the Soviet Union. After the war in the USSR, the Jews of Silence, in the immortal phrase of Elie Wiesel, still could not learn about their identity, culture and history. In the mid-1970s in the USSR, there was a big debate between refuseniks such as myself on the dilemma of Jewish continuity; there were those who maintained that the only solution to the Jewish issue was that of Aliya – being able to emigrate to Israel; others believed that education in the spirit of Jewish philosophers such as Ahad Ha’am, was the first essential element to regaining Jewish identity. Later on, as Chair of the Executive of the Jewish Agency for Israel, I saw my primary task as promoting and consolidating Jewish education and helping Jews around the world reconnect with the sources of Judaism as the vital constituent of their identity. A little more than a quarter of a century ago, the Iron Curtain came down; the gates of the Soviet Union finally opened and in so doing, changed the 9 face of the Jewish world. Nearly two million Jews, after years of struggle and refusal, were finally freely allowed to leave the country and build a new life for themselves. I myself, after nine years of imprisonment on charges of high treason, espionage and illegal Zionist activity, was finally expelled from the Soviet Union in 1986 arriving in Israel later that same day. Of the two million Jews who left, more than half – like myself – chose to move to Israel. The vast influx of Russian speakers into the country caused a monumental change to the nature of the state. By the sheer number of new immigrants the very fabric of Israel’s society has changed: its social structure, its culture, theater, music, medicine, science and engineering, even its politics, have been changed. There is no feature of life in Israel that has not been affected by the presence and involvement of new immigrants. But this has happened not only in Israel. Many more hundreds of thousands of Russian-speaking Jews have chosen to make new lives for themselves and their families in the United States, in Canada, in Australia, in Western Europe. In addition, there has been a resurgence of Jewish life in all the countries of the former Soviet Union – including in Russia itself, in Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova. At this point, the Limmud FSU (former Soviet Union) program took up the challenge, realizing that among Russian-speakers, especially those who had chosen to remain in the former Soviet Union, there was a woeful lack of knowledge of basic Jewish culture and Judaism; or perhaps, rather a lack of opportunity for learning and community engagement that would resonate with the younger generation. For many of them, the established Jewish institutions were often not equipped to provide the type of content that they needed. In 2005, a group of far-sighted individuals decided to do something about it and began to adapt the highly successful Limmud educational project which had begun in the United Kingdom in 1980, for Russian- speaking Jews across the world. Over the last decade and more, Limmud FSU has brought opportunities for Jewish learning and engagement, as well as a sense of identity, to over 55,000 people in four continents and dozens of venues, through its outreach programs of Jewish education, history, traditional and religious sources, literature, theater, poetry, music, dance, cuisine, folklore, Jewish identity and Zionism, aimed at an audience of all levels of prior Jewish knowledge – or none. All this is based on a volunteer-run series of pluralistic, egalitarian, non-denominational conferences and festivals aimed at Russian-speakers of all ages – but especially the younger generation which 10 was deprived of its Jewish background for so long and who may now provide a new generation of Russian-speaking Jewish leaders. I too, have had the pleasure of participating and speaking in Limmud events – in the United Kingdom, the USA and of course in Israel. The Limmud festivals are unique happenings that unite all of us, whatever our different levels of observance or knowledge of Judaism and Jewish life and culture may be. For this, Limmud FSU deserves our warmest gratitude and appreciation. Long may its current educational work and promotion of a sense of Jewish unity and pride continue to flourish. 11 INTRODUCTION Outside, the cold intensifies; inside the atmosphere is boiling over. An anonymous hand draws a Star of David on the steam-covered window pane. Another hand adds “Jew” and a third adds “Jerusalem,” and draws a line linking “Jerusalem and “Vitebsk.” The last hand confuses me. It belongs to what appears to be a Hassid with a kippa on his head, but he is dancing in a circle on this Shabbat eve to the electrifying music. His pious wife, in a white beret, is wildly dancing in the circle and holding hands with two men, neither of whom are her husband.

Joseph Sassoon Semah Upon their arrival in Israel, Mizrahi Jews found themselves under a regime that demanded obedience, even in cultural matters. All were required to conform to an idealized pioneer figure who sang classical, militaristic ‘Hebrew’ songs. That is, before the ‘Kasetot’ era propelled Mizrahi artists into the spotlight, paving the way for today’s musical stars. Part two of a musical journey beginning in Israel’s Mizrahi neighborhoods of the 1950s and leading up to Palestinian singer Mohammed Assaf. Read part one here. Our early encounter with Zionist music takes place in kindergarten, then later in schools and the youth movements, usually with an accordionist in tow playing songs worn and weathered by the dry desert winds. Music teachers at school never bothered with classical music, neither Western nor Arabian, and traditional Ashkenazi liturgies – let alone Sephardic – were not even taken into account. The early pioneer music was hard to stomach, and not only because it didn’t belong to our generation and wasn’t part of our heritage. More specifically, we were gagging on something shoved obsessively down our throat by political authority. Our “founding fathers” and their children never spared us any candid detail regarding the bodily reaction they experience when hearing the music brought here by our fathers, and the music we created here. But not much was said regarding the thoughts and feelings of Mizrahi immigrants (nor about their children who were born into it) who came here and heard what passed as Israeli music, nor about their children who were born into it.

A part of the outer retaining wall of the Second Temple that was destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE, it is the place closest to the ancient Holy of Holies, where only the Kohanim— —Jewish priests were allowed access. When Israel gained independence in 1948, Jordan controlled the Western Wall and all of the Old City of Jerusalem; the city was reunified in the 1967 Six-Day War. The Western Wall is considered an Orthodox synagogue by Israeli authorities, with separate prayer spaces for men and women. A mixed egalitarian prayer area operates along a nearby section of the Temple’s retaining wall, raising to the forefront contemporary ideas of religious expression—a prime example of how Israel navigates between past and present. Drawn by the freshness and variety of produce, Israelis and tourists alike flock to the shuk, turning it into a microcosm of the country. Shuks in smaller cities and towns operate just one day per week, while larger markets often play a key role in the city’s cultural life.     EVALUATING PEACE EDUCATION IN THE OSLO/INTIFADA GENERATION: AN IMPACT STUDY OF SEEDS OF PEACE 1993-2010 BY Ned Lazarus ABSTRACT Since 1993, several thousand Israeli and Palestinian youth have participated in 12 summer “coexistence” programs in North America. The programs espouse a common theory of change: that an experience of dialogue in an idyllic American setting will inspire youth to return to the Middle East as aspiring peacemakers. This dissertation provides the first large-scale, long-term empirical assessment of that theory, by tracking the peacebuilding activity of all 824 Israeli and Palestinian graduates of SOP's first decade of operation (1993- 2003), and complementing this with qualitative research on more than 100 adult graduates (ages 21-30). The longitudinal framework assesses fluctuations in activity over time, highlighting the influence of changing personal, organizational, and political contexts. Key findings include that more than half of alumni engaged in peacebuilding during high school; that compulsory Israeli military service discouraged activity among both Israeli and Palestinian graduates; that nearly one-fifth of alumni engaged in peacebuilding as adults; and that extensive follow-up programming was essential for sustaining long-term commitments to peacebuilding. The study concludes that the international intervention structure embeds an effective educational model in a problematic organizational model. While providing an unprecedented evaluation of a popular peace education approach, this study tells the stories of a pivotal generation: Palestinians and Israelis who entered adolescence at the hopeful dawn of the Oslo peace process, to emerge as adults in an era of intifada and “separation.” 1 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This dissertation is the culmination of a journey of eight years of practice, and seven years of research, study and writing.

The United States and other traditional allies had excoriated the Polish government over the law, passed in February, condemning it as largely unenforceable, a threat to free speech, and an act of historical revisionism. Although both ethnic Poles and Jews living in Poland suffered unfathomable loss during World War II, the law drove a wedge between Israel and Poland, setting back years of hard work to repair bitter feelings. Both houses of Parliament voted on Wednesday to remove the criminal penalties, after an emotional session that saw one nationalist lawmaker try to block access to the podium. President Andrzej Duda later signed the measure into law, his office said. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel welcomed the move, saying in a statement that he was pleased Poland rescinded provisions that “caused a storm and consternation in Israel and among the international community.” By amending the statute, Poland’s governing Law and Justice party hoped to repair some of the diplomatic damage it had caused, even as it pressed ahead with sweeping judicial overhauls that have been condemned by European Union leaders as a threat to the rule of law.

According to this suggestion, there are five stages of examination that can be made into a work-page or can be asked in the classroom. We suggest, for each stage, a number of questions that can be asked. 1. First reactions. 2. Identification of the subject – between the story and the picture. 3. Artistic fashioning – describing what the artist has done. 4. Examining the meaning. 5. Connecting back with the text. 1. First reactions - What catches your eye in the picture? What feeling or atmosphere does the picture evoke? - At first glance, what do you like or dislike in the picture? - Does the picture remind you of anything or make you think of anything specific? 2. Identification of the subject – between the story and the picture. - What is shown from the p'shat of the biblical story? (Characters, events, ideas, values). - What if anything, did the artist leave out? - What did the artist add to the text as he or she came to express his or her version of the text? - Give a title to the painting and sum up what is the main emphasis of the picture. 3. Artistic fashioning – describing what the artist has done.
