BEHOLD THE MAN: JESUS IN ISRAELI ART by Amitai Mendelsohn. Trans. Simon Montagu, Carol Sutherland, and Richard Flantz. Jerusalem: Magnes Press. 2017. 312 pages. The past decade has seen a wealth of new scholarship on the relationship between Judaism and Christianity, as well as Jewish culture and its engagement with Christian iconography. Until now, those studies have largely focused on texts: from Peter Schaefer’s and Daniel Boyarin’s work on ancient Jewish and Christian texts and the entangled relationship of Judaism with early Christianity, to the modern scholars – including Neta Stahl and Matthew Hoffman – who have explored Jewish philosophical and literary engagement with Jesus and Christianity. Some of these scholars, along with the Israeli art historian Ziva Amishai-Maisels, have also touched on Christological influences in Jewish visual culture. However, until now there has been no attempt to create a comprehensive account of Christian imagery in modern Jewish art or to broadly explore the cultural relationship between Jewish artists and Christian iconography, particularly the figure of Jesus. Amitai Mendelsohn’s Behold the Man: Jesus in Israeli Art, steps into this gap. Written to accompany an exhibition on display at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem (also curated by Mendelsohn) in 2016–17, this volume is perhaps too narrowly titled: its subject actually extends somewhat beyond the boundaries of Israeli art, and beyond a focus on representations of Jesus. Behold the Man contextualizes the relatively brief history of Israeli art about Jesus within the much broader field of over a thousand years of Jewish thought and writing about Christianity. As Mendelsohn notes in his introduction, his study is focused on “identifying and discussing the sources that influenced the works of generations of Jewish and Israeli artists,” (15) and this includes not only artistic sources, of which he provides plentiful examples, but also philosophical and literary ones. -

Israel Museum Announces 2016 Exhibition Highlights Exhibitions in Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Architecture Reflect on Cross-Cultural Exchange Spanning Millennia Jerusalem (January 7, 2015) — The Israel Museum, Jerusalem today announced its upcoming program of exhibitions for 2016, following the conclusion of its 50th Anniversary celebrations throughout 2015. From focused presentations of international contemporary artists to exhibitions exploring cross-cultural themes, the Museum’s 2016 program embraces topics spanning continents, genres, and time periods. Opening on March 4 as a centerpiece of the Museum’s 2016 season, Pharaoh in Canaan: The Untold Story marks the first-ever exhibition to explore the cross-cultural ties between Egypt and Canaan during the second millennium BCE through an unprecedented display of more than 650 ancient artifacts. Featuring objects discovered in Egypt and Israel, the exhibition illuminates the cross-fertilization of ritual practices and aesthetic vocabularies between these two distinct ancient cultures. CHAGALLTH AND THE CIRCLE OF JEWISH PAINTERS OF THE 20 CENTURY WALLY FINDLAY GALLERIES M ARC C HAGALL (1887 - 1985) MARC CHAGALL was born July 7, 1887, in Vitebsk, Russia. From 1907 to 1910, he studied in St. Petersburg at the Imperial Society for the Protection of the Arts and later with Leon Bakst. In 1910 he moved to Paris, where he was associated with Guillaume Apollinaire and Robert Delaunay and encountered Fauvism and Cubism. He participated in the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d’Automne in 1912 and held his first solo show in 1914 at Der Sturm Gallery in Berlin. Chagall visited Russia in 1914 and was prevented from returning to Paris by the outbreak of the war. He settled in Vitebsk where he was appointed Commissar for Art in 1918. He founded the Vitebsk Popular Art School and directed it until his resignation in 1920. He moved to Moscow and executed his first stage designs for the State Jewish Chamber Theater. He returned to Paris in 1923 and his first retrospective took place in 1924 at the Galerie Barbazanges-Hodebert, Paris. In 1933, the Kunsthalle Basel held a major retrospective of his work. During World War II, Chagall fled to the United States. The Museum of Modern Art, New York, gave him a retrospective in 1946. He settled permanently in France in 1948 and exhibited in Paris, Amsterdam and London. During 1951, he visited Israel and executed his first sculptures. During the 1960s, Chagall continued to travel widely, often in association with large- scale commissions he received. -

Myers, Co-Chair “The Struggle for Sephardic-Mizrahi Autonomy” chronicles the creation of a Sephardic- Mizrahi identity–literally, “Oriental” Jews–uncovering the ways that political and racial factors contributed to the emergence of this identity. My inquiry draws from an extensive body of archives located in Israel, New York, and Los Angeles. I have investigated immigration records of the Jewish community in Palestine from the 1920s, protocols of Sephardic-Mizrahi organizations and letters, and journalistic pieces to chart the crystallization of a unified ii Sephardic-Mizrahi entity by 1918, the organizational forms it took in the 1920s, and the way in which it became the subject of careful scholarly scrutiny in the 1930s and 1940s. In tandem with tracing the political strengthening of the Sephardic-Mizrahi federation, my dissertation throws into sharp relief the multiple studies undertaken by Jewish social scientists and medical professionals in the mid-1930s and into the 1940s. These studies invariably concluded that Sephardim-Mizrahim were intellectually impaired and predisposed to criminality, ascribing their imputed inferiority to biological differences. Ironically, Sephardic- Mizrahi leaders not only accepted such “scientific evidence” of their inferiority, but also leveraged this imposed racialized identity to highlight their invisible histories and marginal status. -
