Now recruiting “Flowers and Greenery Staff” Members of the Flowers and Greenery Staff (Hana to Midori no Staff) are volunteers who will be responsible for jobs such as growing plant seedlings in the Seedling Nursery at the citizens’ square (Machinaka Shimin Hiroba in Naka-machi) and planting trees, flowers, etc. in public flower beds. In order to deepen their knowledge of horticulture, they will participate in horticulture classes and natural walks. For organizations, come help grow plant seedlings at the City’s Seedling Nursery At the Seedling Nursery, we cultivate plant seedlings and distribute them to public facilities. Organizations that participate will receive plant seedlings of their own. Some Observations on the Weddings of Tokugawa Shogun’s Daughters – Part 2 Abstract This section discusses the complex psychological and philosophical reason for Shogun Yoshimune’s contrasting handlings of his two adopted daughters’ and his favorite son’s weddings. In my thinking, Yoshimune lived up to his philosophical principles by the illogical, puzzling treatment of the three weddings. We can witness the manifestation of his modest and frugal personality inherited from his ancestor Ieyasu, cohabiting with his strong but unconventional sense of obligation and respect for his benefactor Tsunayoshi. Through a series of case studies, I examine the works of art and architecture created by or for three sisters of the Asai 浅井 family: Yodo- dono 淀殿 (1569-1615), Jōkō-in 常高院 (1570-1633), and Sūgen-in 崇源院 (1573-1626). The Asai sisters held an elite status in their lifetimes, in part due to their relationship with the “Three Unifiers” of early 17th century Japan—Oda Nobunaga (1534-1582), Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537- 1589), and Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616). As such, they were uniquely positioned to participate in the cultural battle for control of Japan. In each of my three case studies, I look at a specific site or object associated with one of the sisters.

    Encyclopedia of Shinto Chronological Supplement 『神道事典』巻末年表、英語版 Institute for Japanese Culture and Classics Kokugakuin University 2016 Preface This book is a translation of the chronology that appended Shinto jiten, which was compiled and edited by the Institute for Japanese Culture and Classics, Kokugakuin University. That volume was first published in 1994, with a revised compact edition published in 1999. The main text of Shinto jiten is translated into English and publicly available in its entirety at the Kokugakuin University website as "The Encyclopedia of Shinto" (EOS). This English edition of the chronology is based on the one that appeared in the revised version of the Jiten. It is already available online, but it is also being published in book form in hopes of facilitating its use. The original Japanese-language chronology was produced by Inoue Nobutaka and Namiki Kazuko. The English translation was prepared by Carl Freire, with assistance from Kobori Keiko. Translation and publication of the chronology was carried out as part of the "Digital Museum Operation and Development for Educational Purposes" project of the Institute for Japanese Culture and Classics, Organization for the Advancement of Research and Development, Kokugakuin University.     Japanese Journal of Religious Studies 2002 29/3-4 Shinto as a Religion for the Warrior Class The Case of Yoshikawa Koretaru Bernhard Scheid This article deals with developments of Shinto in the seventeenth century, focussing on the school of Yoshikawa Shinto. It is presented as an example of the coalition between Shinto and Neo-Confucianism intellectuals typical for that time. Pointing out the medieval predecessors of this coalition, the article argues that the theological ideas of Yoshikawa Shinto were much more indebted to medieval Shinto than is generally assumed. This is demonstrated by a doctrinal comparison as well as by a historiographical sketch of the relations between Yoshikawa Shinto and Yoshida Shinto. Both schools regarded themselves as legitimate representatives of Japan original Way of the kami. The article examines the internal justifications of these claims as well as their acknowledgments by the political authorities. Thus the enshrinements of Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1599 (one year after his death, as Toyokuni Daimyojin 豊国大明ネ申 in Kyoto) and Tokueawa Ieyasu in 1617 (also one year after his death, as Tosho Daieongen 東照大権現 in Nikko) have often been regarded as landmarks 1 I follow Herman Ooms’s evaluation here.

  • Aizu Style Aizu Wakamatsu Is an Atmospheric Castle Town
    Aizu Style Aizu Wakamatsu is an atmospheric castle town surrounded by the magnificent nature of Mount Bandai and Lake Inawashiro and retaining vestiges of the Aizu clan. The original model of Aizu Wakamatsu was built by Gamo Ujisato (1556–95), a prominent warlord who served Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The traditional industries representing Aizu that Ujisato developed by summoning merchants and craftsmen from Omi Province (present-day Hino-cho in Shiga Prefecture), such as lacquer ware and sake brewing, are still thriving around the city even now. On the day of the annual Aizu Clan Samurai Parade, in which around 500 people dress up as samurai and parade through the city, we set our minds in historical mode and took a nostalgic stroll around Aizu Wakamatsu to enjoy the townscape of imposing warehouses built in the Edo period (1603–1868) and stylish Western-style buildings of the Taisho era (1912–26). Elegant Castle and Graceful Teahouse Aizu Wakamatsu is a castle town centered on Tsuruga Castle, famous as an impregnable fortress that withstood bombardment by pro-imperial forces at the time of the Boshin Civil War (1868–69). In the past and even today, Tsuruga Castle is a source of pride and psychological support for the people of Aizu. In May of this year retiling work was completed, and all of the buildings in the castle grounds were given a uniform late-Edo look. The new contrast between the sparkling white walls and red tiles is splendid, and among the extant donjon in Japan, Tsuruga Castle’s tower is the only one in the country with red tiles.
