Billy Cobham and The Crosswinds Project, on Saturday, July 28 at 7:30 p.m., will bring Billy Cobham’s acclaimed national touring Crosswinds Project Band in a re-visitation and celebration of Cobham’s album Crosswinds released in 1974. The Origins of Non-violence Tolstoy and Gandhi in Their Historical Settings Martin Green The Origins of Non-violence This book describes the world-historical forces, acting on the periphery of the modern world—in Russia in the nineteenth century—which developed the idea of nonviolence in Tolstoy and then in Gandhi. It was from Tolstoy that Gandhi first learned of this idea, but those world-historical forces acted upon and through both men. The shape of the book is a convergence, the coming together of two widely separate lives, under the stress of history. The lives of Tolstoy and Gandhi begin at widely separate points— of time, of place, of social origin, of talent and of conviction; in the course of their lives, they become, respectively, military officer and novelist, and lawyer and political organizer. They win fame in those roles; but in the last two decades of their lives, they occupy the same special space—ascetic/saint/prophet. Tolstoy and Gandhi were at first agents of modern reform, in Russia and India. But then they became rebels against it and led a profound resistance—a resistance spiritually rooted in the traditionalism of myriad peasant villages. The book’s scope and sweep are enormous. Jackson Lears There was danger in the modern American soundscape; the danger of interruption and disorder. The rhetoric of postwar aural culture was preoccupied with containing sounds and keeping them in their appropriate places. The management and domestication of noise was a critical political and social issue in the quarter century following the Second World War. It was also an aesthetic issue. Although technological noise was celebrated in modern American literature, music and popular culture as a signal of technological sublime and the promise of modern rationality in the US, after 1945 noise that had been exceptional and sublime became mundane. Technological noise was resignified as "pollution" and narrated as the aural detritus of modernity. Modern music reinforced this project through the production of hegemonic fields of representation that legitimized the discursive boundaries of modernity and delegitimized that which lay outside of them. Postwar American modernist composers, reconfigured as technical specialists, developed a hyper-rational idiom of "total control" which sought to discipline aural disorder and police the boundaries between aesthetically- acceptable music and sound and disruptive noise. -
“Gaps” by Countering Hybrid Warfare – Building Resilience in Jus Ante Bellum
LEGAL CHALLENGES OR “GAPS” BY COUNTERING HYBRID WARFARE – BUILDING RESILIENCE IN JUS ANTE BELLUM Morten M. Fogt* Abstract This article is based on practical legal experience with the concept of “hybrid war.” It addresses this much discussed concept, the specific treaty limitations and the currently adopted hybrid countermeasures and then goes into a detailed legal analysis of the challenges and “gaps” that emerge. Both the traditional gray zones of the jus ad bellum and jus in bello are investigated from a hybrid war perspective as well as the specific legal challenges of confronting and countering a hybrid threat or warfare in peace time and crisis. A legal tetrachotomy is proposed consisting of the jus ante bellum, the traditional divide of the jus ad bellum and jus in bello and, moreover, the jus post bellum. It is suggested that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) build more robust legal resilience in the jus ante bellum, that legal research in this area is prioritized, that NATO look at drafting model SOFAs and reforming the old NATO SOFA of 1951 and thereby take the new peacetime and crisis hybrid challenges into account, as this would reduce the need for and complexity of different multiple bilateral SOFAs, and that NATO instigates legal research aiming at harmonizing and aligning the various national peacetime and crisis (emergency or martial) laws and draft * Lieutenant Colonel of the Danish Army, Chief Legal Advisor, NATO Multinational Division North (MNDN), Latvia/Denmark, Associated Professor in Civil and International Law, Aarhus University, Denmark. Foley, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2007 This dissertation presents an ethnomusicological study of the art of three Pittsburgh jazz drummers, Joe Harris, Ron Tucker, and Roger Humphries with particular reference to the nexus relations between performance practice and the interpretation of experience. Following the work of Davis, Nketia and others this study argues for an approach to the analysis of black music which takes into consideration the viewpoints of the musicians who produce the music as well as those of the community who participate at performance events. Accordingly it examines the art of these drummers not only in terms of sound and structure but also in respect of the cultural factors that govern the operation of style and the meaning systems behind the music.
