Signature ST. STEPHEN’S COLLEGE ART THERAPY IN ADDICTIONS RECOVERY: A GRAFTING PLACE FOR WOMEN’S HEALING by Nancy Jean Olthuis A thesis submitted to the Faculty of St. Stephen’s College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF PSYCHOTHERAPY AND SPIRITUALITY (ART THERAPY SPECIALIZATION) Edmonton, Alberta Convocation: November 2013 DEDICATION This thesis is dedicated to my children and grandchildren: Ian & Laura, John Matthew, Kendra, and Kara; Zane & Danielle and Aurora. May you fly with God-given wings. It is the Spirit Who gives life [He is the Life-giver] John 6:63 (Amp) ABSTRACT Using a phenomenological approach, my thesis question is: What is the lived experience of the women who participate in an addictions recovery group that uses art therapy featuring metaphors related to the vine. Infusing a metaphor about the various attributes of the vine, including narrative and visual art therapy images, had the intention of supporting creative elements in the women’s recovery journey relevant to 12-step programs. My interventions were based on art therapy, applied research, and theological study. I drew deeply from the natural world and Christian-based traditions, weaving art, photography, movement, and writing with ritual and spiritual practice. The vine becomes the intertwining metaphor for this study’s research. I employed phenomenological methodology as the research approach in order to search for themes and the essence of the lived experience(s) of these women, particularly examining whether or not the vine metaphor is relevant and could facilitate the participants’ therapeutic experience. Organic inquiry, which is based on the growth of a plant, inspired aspects of the method. Participants were from a Christian-based residential recovery centre for women. The data was collected from individually recorded interviews and from the mundane data that members contributed through art, non-verbal communication, and verbal comments during the group sessions. The themes support the capacity of artmaking, art reflection, and group dynamics as an efficient, effective addictions treatment modality. I constructed and included a manual called VINES (Visioning Images in Nature Empowering Soul-healing). ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS My Lord and my God who is always before, beside, behind, and beneath me. With deep gratitude to my supervisor, Dr. Jo Ann Hammond-Meiers, whose wisdom and insight have guided me through the valleys and mountaintops of this journey. She modelled creativity and logical thought process to help keep my free-range thinking on track. She encouraged me to trust my intuition, which was a major turning point in going forward. To my art therapy supervisor, Carola Ackery, who gave added dimension to the ideas brought forward in this thesis. To the women of *the Recovery Centre* who brought this thesis to life, and the staff whose support made the research possible. And finally, to my family and dear friends for their support, understanding, and prayers. Foley, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2007 This dissertation presents an ethnomusicological study of the art of three Pittsburgh jazz drummers, Joe Harris, Ron Tucker, and Roger Humphries with particular reference to the nexus relations between performance practice and the interpretation of experience. Following the work of Davis, Nketia and others this study argues for an approach to the analysis of black music which takes into consideration the viewpoints of the musicians who produce the music as well as those of the community who participate at performance events. Accordingly it examines the art of these drummers not only in terms of sound and structure but also in respect of the cultural factors that govern the operation of style and the meaning systems behind the music.

On Gardens “The garden is the smallest parcel of the world and then it is the totality of the world. The garden has been a sort of happy, universalizing heterotopia since the beginning of antiquity.” -- Michel Foucault My work since graduate school is explicitly connected to an operating paradigm of “gardens.” Gardens are classic examples of heterotopic spaces, i.e. “a place with multiple uses” (Michel Foucault), such as libraries, cemeteries, and museums. Through gardens, I have been examining various ordering systems (e.g. gardens as controlled nature) via a range of representations and working methods. Just as gardens are varied, the term provides me with a license to explore a range of ideas (e.g. displacement, sequential time, chance operations) with heterogeneous methods. In addition to theorizing this work through the language of abstraction, it also references art made in a range of cultures and historical styles such as a Southern quilt tradition and tree of life motifs found in carpets (i.e. portable gardens). Recent work is an extension of this research but is marked by revisiting ideas such as camouflage, mapping, and traces that were central to my concerns well before graduate school. Architecture and Sculpture: A Cross Pollination of Attitudes and Intentions The last three decades of the twentieth century saw the disciplines of architecture and sculpture merge in a manner previously unseen.

Comprised of the city’s third and fifth wards, the Hill is located on the upward sloping eastern border of downtown that, in the first half of the twentieth century, fostered a thriving social life marked by the intersection of music, entrepreneurship, and a shifting demographic landscape. The scope of this study includes the decades between WWI and the 1968 riots sparked by the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King—a period that encapsulates the emergence of jazz as an American cultural practice and the development of the urban African American neighborhood.

So what does that mean about 60? Rather than being close to retirement (if anyone even does that anymore), it means a jazz musician right in the middle of their prime.
