Roland.H..Kaschek.(MSc, mathematics; PhD, mathematics; DSc, applied informatics) is an associate professor with the Department of Information Systems at Massey , New Zealand. His research interest is in con- ceptual modeling including its philosophical, linguistic, and mathematical foundations and its application.

Gunter.Grieser is working in the fields of learning theory, machine learn- ing, and data mining, as well as e-learning. He studied artificial intelligence at the Technical University and worked in the research groups of Professors K.P. Jantke, W. Bibel, and J. Fürnkranz. He earned his PhD in 2001 and is now working as a research assistant with the Computer Science Department at the Technical University, Darmstadt.

Achim.Hoffmann studied computer science and philosophy at the Technische University at (TU Berlin), . In 1985, he earned a Master of Science in computer science (-Informatiker); in 1992, he earned a PhD in computer science, and in 1993 a PhD in philosophy with a thesis on the philosophical foundations of artificial intelligence from TU Berlin. In 1997, he earned a Habilitation in computer science from the same institution. He has been lecturer, senior lecturer, and since 2001, an associate professor at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. His current research interests are in the area of NLP and knowledge acquisition.

Christoph.Igel.studied sports science, history, political science, and educa- tion at University (1989-1996), and worked on a doctorate in sports science, education, and modern history at (1997-2000). Since 2001, he has worked as the scientific assistant of Dr. Reinhard Daugs, chair of sport science. Since 1998, he has been part of the joint coordination of the Information Technologies in European Sport and Sport Science (ITES) project (http://ites.uni-saarland.de), which was backed by the European Commission. Since 1999, he has cooperated in the Virtual Saar University (VISU) (http://visu.uni-saarland.de), which was backed by the Saarland Ministry for Education, Culture, and Science and Saarland University. Since 2001, he has worked on the joint coordination of the e-Learning in Movement and Training Science (eBuT) project, which was backed by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research. Since 2002, he has served as deputy manager of the Competence Center at the “Virtual Saar University” of Saarland University.

Kimihito.Ito is an associate professor at Hokkaido University. He earned a PhD in electrical engineering from Hokkaido University in 1999. His re- search interests are in the areas of bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, and Web engineering. In particular, he has developed an IntelligentPad system called CHIP, with which users can wrap existing Web application with pads to be combined with other Web applications to compose new tools. He also developed an ILP system called BORDA.

Klaus.Jantke engaged in studies of mathematics at Humboldt University Berlin (1970-1975), and in 1975, received a diploma in mathematics at Humboldt. In 1979, he earned a PhD in computer science; in 1984, he earned a Facultas Docendi and Habilitation (DrSc) in computer science, winning

About the Authors  awards such as the Karl Weierstrass Prize in 1977 and the Humboldt Prize in 1981. He has held professorships at Kuwait University, Leipzig University of Technology, and Hokkaido University Sapporo, heading several research and development projects sponsored by DFG, by several German Federal Ministries such as for Research and Technology (BMFT), for Education and Research (BMBF), for Economics (BMWi), for Economics and Labor (BMWA), and by NATO and other institutions. He has done additional teach- ing at Ilmenau University of Technology, Saarland University Saarbrücken, Darmstadt University of Technology, and Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. He has been a visiting researcher at ICSI, Berkeley (USA), and the Fujitsu Research Labs, Numazu, Japan. His main research and development interests are in algorithmic learning theory, meme media technology, and technology enhanced learning. Since 2005, he has been the chief executive officer of FIT Leipzig, the Research Institute for Information Technologies Leipzig, Germany.

Since 1999, Sabina.Jeschke has initiated and headed numerous e-learning, e-teaching and e-research projects. She worked as an assistant teacher with the Department of Math and earned her doctorate in 2004. Holding a schol- arship from the German National Academic Foundation, she spent several months of research at NASA at Moffet Field, CA. In 2000-2001, she worked as an instructor at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. She is one of the principal forces behind the modernization of the mathematical education at the TU Berlin. Since 2005, she has been the head of MuLF Multimedia Center for e-Learning, e-Teaching, & e-Research (MuLF) at the TU Berlin. Her research is aimed at developing new concepts for cooperative virtual knowledge spaces, in particular their application in e-learning, e-teaching, e-research, and e-sci- ence in mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering.

Alexander.Krumpholz received a Diplom-Ingenieur (equivalent master’s degree) in applied informatics from the University of Klagenfurt, Austria (2000). In 1997, he spent six months in Maryland (USA), developing a high performing database application for a successful Web service provider. Since 2001, he has lived in Australia and holds a position as a research engineer for the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO). During this period, he has been a member of various groups within CSIRO, working on a knowledge portal, a search engine, and CSIRO’s Haptic Workbench, a platform for Immersive Haptic Virtual Environments.

His research interests are in data and knowledge engineering, information retrieval, visualization, and virtual environments.

Steffen.Lange has scientific interests in the following sub-areas of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence: recursion theory, formal lan- guage theory, algorithmic learning theory, and machine learning. He earned the diploma in mathematics and physics in 1984 and a PhD in computer science in 1984—both from Humboldt University, Berlin. He habilitated in computer science at Leipzig University in 2000. In April 2004, he became a professor for theoretical computer science at Darmstadt University of Ap- plied Sciences.

Nataliya.Lamonova was born in Magadan, Russia, in 1974. She received the engineer of computer systems degree in computer science in 1997. She became candidate of technical sciences (equivalent PhD) in 2001 on control systems and processes from Kharkiv National University of Radio Electronics, Kharkiv, Ukraine. For six months she was in the Meme Media Laboratory in Japan as a COE postdoctoral fellow. She is currently a senior researcher at the Control Systems Research Laboratory. She has more then 30 scientific publications. Her current research interests are neuro-, fuzzy- hybrid systems, logic programming, meme media technology, forecasting, emulation, and classification of time series.

Carsten.Müller is a software developer at SAP AG in Walldorf, Germany. Born in Karlsruhe and raised in Bruchsal, he graduated from Schoenborn Grammar School, Bruchsal, in 1996. After receiving his Master of Computer Engineering from the in 2002, he started working at SAP AG in Walldorf. He is a PhD student at the FIT Leipzig and is thereby sponsored by SAP AG. His research interests are in information extraction and learning systems for wrapper induction, and their integration into text retrieval systems and SAP Solutions.

Son.Bao.Pham is currently a PhD student in the School of Computer Science and Engineering, University of New South Wales, Australia. He obtained a Bachelor of Computer Science with Honor Class 1 and The University Medal in 2001 from UNSW. His research interests are natural language processing, knowledge acquisition, and machine learning.

Thomas.Richter earned his PhD in 2000 in physics on Quantum Hall con- ductance and noncommutative geometry. Between 2000 and 2002, he worked as project leader for still image compression, JPEG2000, at the AlgoVision Technology GmbH. While staying active in the JPEG2000 ISO committee, he moved back to the University of Technology Berlin in 2002, where he holds a position as scientific researcher in the Matheon Research Center for key technologies of the Berlin . There, he is the chief developer and designer of the Virtual Laboratories research project, G4 of the Matheon, which provides a cooperative learning environment for statistical mechan- ics. Dr. Richter taught courses in linear algebra and image compression, coordinates the assessment of the junior teaching staff, and develops image compression software for Pegasus Imaging in the U.S. His main research focus is the development of new teaching concepts in mathematics and phys- ics by the application of new media, and image compression.

Klaus-Dieter.Schewe (MSc, PhD, DSc) is a full professor at Massey Univer- sity in New Zealand and director of Massey’s Information Science Research Center. His major research interests are database theory and systems, logic in databases and systems development methodologies, in particular for Web information systems.

Roberta.Sturm completed studies of sport science focusing on informatics at the University of Technology Darmstadt (1996-2001). From 2001-2004, she served as scientific assistant on the project eLearning in Movement and Training Science (eBuT) (http://www.ebut.de), which is backed by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research at Saarland University. Since 2003, she has served as scientific assistant at the Competence Center at the “Virtual Saar University” of Saarland University (http://visu.uni-saarland.de).

Yuzuru.Tanaka is a professor with the Department of Computer Science, Hokkaido University, director of Meme Media Laboratory, Hokkaido Univer- sity, and a professor of bioinformatics at the National Institute of Informatics. He earned a BEng in electrical engineering; an MEng in electronics from Kyoto University (1972 and 1974, respectively); and a DrEng in computer science from the University of Tokyo (1985). He joined Hokkaido University in 1977. Since then, he has been studying parallel processor architectures, database theory, database machine, and media architectures.

Bernhard.Thalheim (MSc, PhD, DSc) is a full professor at Christian Albre- chts University, Germany. His major research interests are database theory, logic in databases, and systems development methodologies, in particular for Web information systems.

Alexei.Tretiakov (MSc, PhD) is a senior lecturer with the Department of Information Systems, Massey University (Palmerston North, New Zealand). His research interests range from stochastic cellular automata and object-ori- ented database management systems to Web-based systems and e-learning.
