Gyekye’s construct of metanationality, in relation to his communitarian ethics, addresses the socio-political and cultural problems confronting multicultural communities, with particular reference to Nigeria. In an attempt to achieve his idea of a “metanational state”, Gyekye claims that: (1) “personhood” is partially defined by a communal structure; (2) equal moral attention should be given both to individual interests and community interests; (3) it is necessary to integrate the “ethic of responsibility” with “rights”; (4) members of the nation-state should be considered equal; (5) in order to achieve nationhood in a multicultural community, it is essential to move beyond “ethnicity” and (6) in an attempt to form a national culture, attention should be drawn to “the elegant” aspects of cultures of various ethno-cultural communities. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I remain grateful to Dr MES van den Berg and Prof MB Ramose who acted as my promoter and co-promoter respectively. Can it be expected that the individualistic ethos will cut into the pristine communal orientation sufficiently deeply to numb or vitiate the sentiments of a shared, communal life that characterizes pre-urban life? Will the ethos of individualism, in the wake of urbanization, make demolitionary inroads into the traditional communal values? Well, maybe; and perhaps to some extent.... I do not imply, given the fundamental importance of the value of the community for human life, that the African communitarian social or moral practice should be totally abandoned, that communitarian values should give way to extreme individualism - the type that tends to ride roughshod over the claims of the community. I mean to suggest instead that the practice would need to be re-evaluated and the necessary refinements made to it (Gyekye 1997:278). 1.1 RESEARCH OBJECTIVE The aim of my research is to give a critical exposition of Kwame Gyekye’s idea of communitarianism1. I will investigate Gyekye’s construct of 1 Communitarianism derives its principles from the idea that a person, when born, finds himself or herself, not in isolation but, among other individuals and thus establishing the relational nature of a person. 1 metanationality2 with its emphasis on moderate communitarianism. It is my contention that Gyekye has a contribution to make towards the understanding of the social and political structures of multicultural communities in Africa. Although Gyekye is a Ghanaian philosopher and draws most of his examples from an analysis of the social order of the traditional Akan society of Ghana, his ideas have relevance to other African

    6 RELIC NOUN-CLASS STRUCTURE IN LEGGBO Larry M. Hyman and Imelda Udoh 1. Introduction * In many West African Niger-Congo languages, historical noun class prefixes undergo significant levelling and/or fusion with the noun stem. Starting from a full set of singular-plural markers both on nouns and on agreeing elements, the logical endpoint of such changes can be the total loss of noun classes, as has happened some of the best-known Benue-Congo and Kwa languages, e.g., Akan, Ewe, Yoruba, Igbo. Resistance to this tendency can be found in certain subgroups in Nigeria, e.g., Upper Cross, where languages such as Mbembe (Barnwell 1969a,b), and Lokaa (lwara 1982) have been reported to have full-fledged noun class marking and concord systems. It is thus striking that closely related Leggbo has lost all noun class agreement. Still, it is possible to identify a prefix-stem structure on the basis of a number of arguments. The purpose of this paper is to document relic noun-class structures in Leggbo, an Upper Cross minority language. Leggbo is spoken by an estimated 60,000 Agbo people in two local government areas, recently named Abi and YakuIT, in Cross River State. In §2 and §3 we demonstrate that although Leggbo has lost the inherited noun class system, nouns must still be analyzed as consisting of a prefix-stem structure. Definition of a Language The preparation of a listing of Nigerian languages inevitably begs the question of the definition of a language. The terms 'language' and 'dialect' have rather different meanings in informal speech from the more rigorous definitions that must be attempted by linguists. Dialect, in particular, is a somewhat pejorative term suggesting it is merely a local variant of a 'central' language. In linguistic terms, however, dialect is merely a regional, social or occupational variant of another speech-form. There is no presupposition about its importance or otherwise. Because of these problems, the more neutral term 'lect' is coming into increasing use to describe any type of distinctive speech-form. However, the Index inevitably must have head entries and this involves selecting some terms from the thousands of names recorded and using them to cover a particular linguistic nucleus. In general, the choice of a particular lect name as a head-entry should ideally be made solely on linguistic grounds.

    Eyo Mensah, Ekawan Silva: The language of libation rituals among the Efik The language of libation rituals among the Efik Eyo Mensah University of Calabar, [email protected] Ekawan Silva University of Calabar, [email protected] Abstract Libation rituals establish strong connections between the present (living beings) and the past (ancestors) as crucial components of African traditional culture and spirituality; they thus emphasise the belief in ancestors and man’s dependence on supernatural forces for existence, growth, and wellbeing. This article examines the language of libation rituals in the context of Efik traditional marriage from literary, ethnographic, and linguistic perspectives. It describes the form and style of language use as well as the structure (morphology and syntax) of libation prayers, which are coded in specific cultural messages. The study reveals that the ritualised and symbolic language of Efik libation performances is generally solemn, poetic, less manipulative and not structurally open-ended, and that though they may employ commonplace everyday narratives, they have pragmatic connotations that can broadly be contextualised and understood in terms of the values and belief system of the Efik, given their culturally-shaped meanings and metaphysical presuppositions. They occupy five out of the eighteen local Government Areas of the state (Akpabuyo, Bakassi, Calabar Municipality, Calabar South, and Odukpani) as we can see in Figure1. The population of Efik is 1.5 million first-language speakers and about 2.0 million second-language speakers (based on 2007 National Census demographic data), given that the language had served as the local lingua franca along the entire Cross River basin for over a century.

Bakassi is found in the Ndian region of the Republic of Cameroon, It has a long border with Nigeria extending from the Lake Chad to the gulf of Guinea. Different opinions were raised by the Bakassi people concerning the Bakassi border conflict. The aim of my thesis is to analyses the opinions of the Bakassi people concerning the Bakassi border conflict, in doing this one also gain insights in to other issues such as nationality and ethnicity. I conducted my work in the light of case study research design, and I used interviews as my method of research. I conducted interviews over four different localities in Bakassi, while my interviewees Cameroonians and Nigerian were also divided in to three groups, this enable me to explore the differences and similarities. The findings of my research work show the different opinions of the Bakassi border conflict. These opinions range from; gendarme brutality, crime rate and piracy, accusations of different nationalities, and governments concerned, witchcraft, fishing problems and others. The significance of my study lies in the fact that, it portrays the different opinions of the Bakassi people concerning the crisis contrary to what outsiders may hold, thus direct the government the way forward forrehabilitationor therapy needed for the restoration of peace and the development of the area.
