The source regions of migrants in the area were identified; the factors that influence their movements, as well as the remittances of migrants to their source regions were ascertained. A total of 384 copies of questionnaires were systematically administered with a frequency of 230 and 153 samples for migrants and non-migrants respectively. Amongst other findings from the analyses, it was established that Akpabuyo is home to migrants from other LGAs and States, especially BakassiLGA and EbonyiState. There were also migrants from other countries such as Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea. The Pearson‟s correlation analysis depicted significant relationship (P = 0.012) between distance to Akpabuyo and the number of migrants that come into the area, implying that distance significantly influences migration to Akpabuyo. Furthermore, the Correspondence Analysis (CA) showed a weak association between the pull and push factors in the area, buttressed by the chi-square testwhich showed insignificant statistical similarity (p = 0.118). It was also established that migrants remitted 74% of their income to their source regions. -

It is also a region of great historical importance, being a) adjacent to the likely homeland from which Bantu-speaking people migrated across most of sub-Saharan Africa 3000-5000 years ago and b) the location of Calabar, one of the largest centres during the Atlantic slave trade. Over 1000 DNA samples from 24 clans representing speakers of the six most prominent languages in the region were collected and typed for Y-chromosome (SNPs and microsatellites) and mtDNA markers (Hypervariable Segment 1) in order to examine whether there has been substantial gene flow between groups speaking different languages in the region. In addition the Cross River region was analysed in the context of a larger geographical scale by comparison to bordering Igbo speaking groups as well as neighbouring Cameroon populations and more distant Ghanaian communities. Results: The Cross River region was shown to be extremely homogenous for both Y-chromosome and mtDNA markers with language spoken having no noticeable effect on the genetic structure of the region, consistent with estimates of inter-language gene flow of 10% per generation based on sociological data. -

Marriage in Africa is a union between a man and a woman (monogamy) or mainly between a man and women (polygyny), or between a woman and men (polyandry), though this is very rare. In some cases it may be serial polygyny or polyandry, i.e. the case of marrying more than one wife or husband, but always after divorce. Marriage just like other institutions in Africa has rites of passage in which those who intend to enter into it must pass through. Every culture has a sense of peculiarity as to the way in which it approaches this matter. The Efik people are not an exception to this. The question that may be asked is, how gender-balanced are these rites? The Efik people claim to have gender equality, but is this reflected in her marriage rites? Rites are symbolisms of what the actual institution which those rites represent. It is in the light of this that this paper using gender theory critically looked at the Efik traditional marriage rites from gender perspective. The paper realized that, among the Efik people’s traditional marriage rites, there is gender imbalance. It proffers ways of having gender balance in Efik traditional marriage rites. Apart from adding a voice to the cry for gender equality and equity, it provides scholarship a resource material needed for Efik ethnographic study. -

Relic Noun-Class Structure in Leggbo
6 RELIC NOUN-CLASS STRUCTURE IN LEGGBO Larry M. Hyman and Imelda Udoh 1. Introduction * In many West African Niger-Congo languages, historical noun class prefixes undergo significant levelling and/or fusion with the noun stem. Starting from a full set of singular-plural markers both on nouns and on agreeing elements, the logical endpoint of such changes can be the total loss of noun classes, as has happened some of the best-known Benue-Congo and Kwa languages, e.g., Akan, Ewe, Yoruba, Igbo. Resistance to this tendency can be found in certain subgroups in Nigeria, e.g., Upper Cross, where languages such as Mbembe (Barnwell 1969a,b), and Lokaa (lwara 1982) have been reported to have full-fledged noun class marking and concord systems. It is thus striking that closely related Leggbo has lost all noun class agreement. Still, it is possible to identify a prefix-stem structure on the basis of a number of arguments. The purpose of this paper is to document relic noun-class structures in Leggbo, an Upper Cross minority language. Leggbo is spoken by an estimated 60,000 Agbo people in two local government areas, recently named Abi and YakuIT, in Cross River State. In §2 and §3 we demonstrate that although Leggbo has lost the inherited noun class system, nouns must still be analyzed as consisting of a prefix-stem structure. Bakassi The Oron perspective Page 1 of 4 Bakassi: The Oron perspective By Edet Uno Leader of the Oron People's Rights Movement AS an Oron man, this analysis of my people 's viewpoints on the Bakassi issue will almost totally ignore the technicalities of the International Court's study and the verdict derived therefrom. My articulation will depart, essentially, from commonsense to the extent of its validity as the basis of all scientific discourse I will route the argument precisely and specifically to answer some pertinent questions most of them fallacious - that have been raised by some key interests on the problem. Right from the beginning some Oron indigenes knew Nigeira had a bad case. And I told this to many of my friends from other parts of the country. If you are a member of the Oron elite or a fisherman or a labourer in one of the hundreds of Cameroonian plantations, where hundreds of thousands of Nigerians make a living from their Cameroonian landlords, the International Court of Justice judgement on the so-called Bakassi Peninsula would show how far the State can go in the pursuit of its interest. It shows the complex nakedness of Nigeria's internal dynamics and the forces governing relationships among its myriad nationalities. It shows the crass inefficiency of those who control the apparatus of power. And above all, it demonstrates the ignorance and falsehood which have been the crucial factor in Nigeria's inability to integrate as an autonomous state that, as a rule, must take all sections of the community and individuals with an objective sense of equity and justice. -
Pentecostalism, the Akan Religion and the Good Life
Pentecostalism, the Akan Religion and the Good Life Joseph Quayesi-Amakye* Introduction It was Geoffrey Parrinder who noted that a comparative study in other religions in Africa can help in understanding attitudes behind traditional religion.1 For example, the emergence of Christian prophetism in the tropics reveals important elements in traditional religion. With the Church of Pentecost (COP) as my main case, I will examine and assess the Ghanaian Pentecostal ideas about the good life. I will also demonstrate the interface between the Akan traditional religio-culture and Pentecostals’ inherited Christian tradition in their ideas about the good life. I will then propose a contextualisation of the ideas of the good life. The Akan people constitute about 44% of the total population of Ghana. Their language and culture pervade through much of the nation’s culture, including the Christian religion. Hence, a discussion of this nature must entail a discussion on how the Akan conceive goodness. We will ask: In what ways does the Ghanaian Pentecostal understanding of God’s goodness and the good life show the impingement of the Akan primal religion? Ghanaian Pentecostalism began with the initial work of Apostle Peter Newman Anim in 1917. Later in 1937, the British Apostolic Church sent a resident missionary, Pastor James McKeown, to help Anim with the administration of his organisation.2 The short-lived relationship would later result in three major churches, (Christ Apostolic Church, The Apostolic Church, and the Church of Pentecost), which together with the American Assemblies of God church constitute the main part of classical Pentecostalism in Ghana. -

1 Towards the Reconstruction of the Tense-Aspect-Mood
Towards the reconstruction of the tense-aspect-mood (TAM) system in early Bantoid, with particular attention to the category “tense” John R. Watters, SIL International September 2012 Proto-Niger-Congo Congress, Paris 1.0 Definition of the question The general purpose of this study is to contribute to our understanding of the tense-aspect- mood (TAM) categories and systems in proto or early Bantoid. Within that broad purpose, this study will give particular attention to the status of tense in Proto-Bantoid or early Bantoid. All Bantoid languages today systematically mark aspectual categories (e.g. imperfective) and modal categories (e.g. subjunctive). However, only some Bantoid languages mark tense as a grammatical category such as the Grassfields Bantu and Narrow Bantu languages. In other Bantoid languages, tense is absent such as in the Ekoid Bantu languages. This variation in the distribution of tense raises the question whether proto or early Bantoid was a tense-aspect language in which tense was lost in some subgroups over time, or was an aspect-prominent language in which certain subgroups innovated tense. If the latter case holds, I would want to ask additional questions: Where and when did the marking of tense as a verbal category emerge? What would it mean for our understanding of the early years of Bantoid, its subgroupings, and its internal migrations? Did the development of tense originate within one sub-set of languages from which it spread to others, or did various subgroups innovate tense independently of the others? I would also want to compare the distribution of tense in Bantoid languages with the results of lexicostatistical studies.
