NETWORK & LEARN PODCASTS AND PUBLIC RADIO: CAN WE STAY AHEAD? EBU GENEVA 28-29 NOVEMBER 2019

FACULTY MEMBER Justin Kings, International media consultant, trainer and broadcaster Justin Kings was a member of the senior management team at the BBC's first multimedia newsroom when he first started experimenting with social media. Shortly afterwards, in 2010, he worked with the EBU Academy to develop one of the first training courses for broadcasters using social platforms. 8 years on, Justin has supported the majority of EBU members in this capacity and he continues to lead Master Classes and bespoke trainings. Justin has more than 25 years’ experience in the UK as a multi-award winning broadcast , editor and presenter. He's also written and lectured classes in social media and ethics and social media and for the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications in the US.

Aura Lindeberg has recently published a paper exploring these questions for the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. Aura explains her main findings across two presentations - first, the podcast landscape.

13:45 - 14:05 HOW SRF USES PODCASTS TO CONNECT WITH COMMUNITIES Cheyenne MacKay, Producer and Host, Pipifax, SRF Marco Morell, Head of Newsroom, SRF Cheyenne and Marco come from different departments at the Swiss-German public media SRF but they share ideas as part of a podcast working group. And, while their podcasts are also very different - parenting and politics - they both aim to use their podcasts to open dialogues with audiences. Cheyenne and Marco explain how they work and what they’ve learned. 14:05 – 14:25 PASSION PODCASTS Jo Good, Presenter, BBC Radio If podcasts can be more personalized and maybe even more intimate than traditional radio, what does this mean for their hosts? How can producers work with them to untap their feelings and passions and sound more authentic than ever before? Jo Good explores how her love of owning a dog, living in the of London, led to her podcast, DOGS AND THE CITY

15:00 - 15:30 Networking coffee break 15:30 - 15:50 BECOMING YOUR COUNTRY’S PODCAST LEADER Edita Kudlacova, Chief Creative Producer, Creative Hub, Czech Radio Three years after Czech Radio launched the first ever podcast produced within the Czech Republic, the content creator who made it explains how this public media is working hard to become the country’s podcast leader. Edita Kudlacova will explain how Czech Radio is attempting to reach out to audiences to aid their understanding and discovery of podcasts and also to the audio industry to encourage high quality production and experimentation. 15:50-16:20 CONNECTING WITH A YOUNG AUDIENCE THROUGH PODCASTS - IN FRENCH SPEAKING CANADA Annie Reeves, Director of Digital Audio Production, Radio Canada In this presentation, we will get an overview of Radio Canada’s challenges in the Francophone market and an overview of its strategy. What’s been tried? What’s worked? What’s coming next?

16:20-16:50 MAKING A NEW IDEA HAPPEN TO REACH AN UNDERSERVED AUDIENCE Jacqui Hurley, Presenter/Reporter, RTE Sport The W is a new podcast at Ireland’s public media, RTE discussing women’s sport. The idea came from its sports , like Jacqui Hurley, who felt increasing the amount of women’s sports within existing podcasts wasn’t enough. After getting the idea approved and making the first episode despite tight resources, The W become RTE’s most downloaded podcast on release. This is its story so far!

What if cyber war broke out? What if we ran out of water on an overpopulated planet? These are just some of the questions tackled head on by the podcast Dystopia from Sveriges Radio’s network for young people, P3. Learn how its Commissioning Editor is using podcasting to produce experimental content and what Caroline Pouron describes as “more of what’s difficult”.

09:30 - 09:45 SO, YOU HAVE A PODCAST - PART 2 - THE CHALLENGES Aura Lindeberg, Executive Producer, Yle Julkaisut Aura Lindeberg who has recently published a paper for the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism details the main challenges she has identified for podcasters. 09:45 - 10:15 HOW BEST TO MEET THE CHALLENGES OF PODCASTING Aura Lindeberg, Executive Producer, Yle Julkaisut Caroline Pouron, Commissioning Editor, SR P3 We debate the challenges for public media, as identified in the previous presentation. 13:00-13:20 WHAT PODCASTS BRING TO L’EQUIPE’S DIGITAL OFFER Jean-Baptiste Renet, Editor in Chief, L’Equipe, France Originally a daily paper, L’Equipe has become the leading Sports multimedia publisher in France. L’Equipe is investing in Podcasts.
