Prof. Dr. Evgeniy R. Radushev January 2019 Established in the nineteenth century, Havas, Reuters and Wolff’s became three major and influential news agencies in the world. Especially Havas and Reuters gave utmost importance to the Ottoman Empire and competed to gain control of news collecting and dissemination in the imperial capital. Being challenged by the Great Power politics of the century, the Ottoman Empire tried to have control of the news Havas and Reuters disseminated in the empire and abroad along with other carriers and makers of information through financial means. Not satisfied with the outcomes of this policy, the empire searched for ways to have its own news agency for more than three decades. The Ottoman Telegraph Agency, the first semi-formal news agency of the Ottoman Empire came into existence in 1911. Özellikle Havas ve Reuters, Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'na büyük önem atfederek imparatorluk başkentin de haber toplama ve yayma faaliyetlerini kontrol altına alabilmek için kıyasıya bir rekabet içerisine girmiştir . Osmanlı İmparatorluğu, Yüzyılın Büyük Güçleri ile devam eden mücadelesi kapsamında diğer bilgi üreten ve taşıyan yapılar ile beraber Havas ve Reuters'in hem İmparatorluk toprakları üzerinde hem de dışarıda h aber toplama ve yayma faaliyetleri üzerinde finan sal yöntemler ile kontrol elde etmeye çalışmıştır. While the expansion of the printing press and long-term changes in literacy, the industrial revolution, the growth of a capitalist economy, and improvements in transportation and communication created a modern society, the news agencies took their respected place in this contemporary world. In the nineteenth century, the concept of ‘information’ was reformulated. ‘Information’ became ‘news’, a commodity to collect and distribute. 1 This act of collecting and distributing news created the first international or global media 1 Oliver Boyd-Barrett and Terhi Rantanen, “The Globalization of News,” in The Globalization of News (London: Sage Publications, 1998), 1. 1 organizations, the news agencies. These agencies were also among the very first transnational or multinational corporations. 2 Their significance was such that: The news agencies were among the world’s first organizations to operate, not only globally, but to operate globally in the production and distribution of ‘consciousness’, through the commodification of news, in ways which had very significant implications for our understanding or appreciation of time and space. 3 The industrial revolution and the transformation of the capitalist market made news agencies necessary. The stock exchange rates were the most important commodity of the three major European news agencies during their first years. With the introduction of new machine technologies and steam power from the late eighteenth century onwards, the nature of capitalist enterprise was transformed, and factories with hundreds of employees became the typical form of a business unit. This transformation occurred most rapidly within the cotton industry. In Britain, between 1792 and 1850, the number of factories increased from about 900 to over 1,400, whereas, between 1750 and 1850, the quantity of raw materials processed by the cotton industry increased more than 200 times. 4 As the victor of the Industrial Re volution, Britain’s industrial economy was such that: … it harnessed the power of a million horses in its steam -engines, turned out two million yards of cotton cloth per year on over seventeen million mechanical spindles,

The project is set to finish in 2016. Material from 2006 onwards is already available in digital format. ITN Source’s experienced researchers have prioritised the digitisation of material relevant to upcoming anniversaries and events, such as the 40th anniversary of the fall of Saigon and the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II – featuring a substantial collection of post-war Winston Churchill footage – in addition to material in response to specific customer requests.     Negative trends associated with the media sphere in previous years persist, such as the media’s low level of professionalism, poor protection and conditions for journalists, a weak and oversaturated media market, an unsustainable public media service, a fragmented media scene, and political influence. BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA 16 EUROPE & EURASIA MEDIA SUSTAINABILITY INDEX 2014 introduction OVERALL SCORE: 2.04 BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H) did not show signs of political or economic stabilization in 2013. The governing political parties avoided focusing on substantive reforms and implementing international standards. In April, Ba new political party launched—the Democratic Front, led by Željko Komšić, the Croat member of the B&H tripartite presidency. In the same month, the president of the Federation of B&H, Živko Budimir, was arrested on the accusation of taking bribes to approve amnesties but was released in May due to lack of evidence. In June 2013, public protests in front of Sarajevo’s parliament building and in other cities in B&H highlighted the lack of regulation of citizen IDs for newborns. The citizen initiative across B&H, although holding a promise of revolutionary change, ended as an unsuccessful bid to change politicians’ corruption, inequality, and incompetence. Finally, at the beginning of November, the B&H House of Peoples, in an emergency session and without debate, adopted the proposed amendments and changes to the law on ID numbers. The fact that the protests were organized through online platforms and social media illustrated new media’s growing influence in socially mobilizing the country. However, Serb and Croat parliamentarians framed the protests as an ethnically driven threat to their security and refused to attend parliamentary sessions for several weeks.

Jackson School of International Studies ©Copyright 2017 Melinda Cohoon University of Washington Abstract The Imperial Frontier: Tribal Dynamics and Oil in Qajar Persia, 1901-1910 Melinda Cohoon Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Assistant Professor Arbella Bet-Shlimon Department of History By using the Political Diaries of the Persian Gulf, I elucidate the complex tribal dynamics of the Bakhtiyari and the Arab tribes of the Khuzestan province during the early twentieth century. Particularly, these tribes were by and large influenced by the oil prospecting and drilling under the D’Arcy Oil Syndicate. My research questions concern: how the Bakhtiyari and Arab tribes were impacted by the British Oil Syndicate exploration into their territory, what the tribal affiliations with Britain and the Oil Syndicate were, and how these political dynamics changed for tribes after oil was discovered at Masjid-i Suleiman. The Oil Syndicate initially received a concession from the Qajar government, but relied much more so on tribal accommodations and treaties. In addressing my research questions, I have found that there was a contention between the Bakhtiyari and the British company, and a diplomatic relationship with Sheikh Khazal of Mohammerah (or today’s Khorramshahr) and Britain. By relying on Sheikh Khazal’s diplomatic skills with the Bakhtiyari tribe, the British Oil Syndicate penetrated further into the southwest Persia, up towards Bakhtiyari territory.
