The Pennsylvania Winery Association (PWA) is excited to announce that the Sommelier Judgment is returning for its fourth year. This year’s blind tasting is scheduled to occur on Monday, October 26 in the Philadelphia area.

Once again the PWA is working closely with Scott Zoccolillo, Wine Director at Del Frisco’s Restaurant Group, and a handful of PA-based Sommeliers to bring together this program.

The wines will be evaluated by a panel of 20 to 25 Sommeliers in a blind tasting. Sommeliers are only told of the varietal.

Judges use criteria such as varietal correctness (color, bouquet, taste and finish) with a strong emphasis on final impression of the wine and balance; ripeness; and consideration of the winemaking decisions (chaptalization and acidification) and if any faults are present afecting the profile of the wine.

Vinifera and Sparkling are only allowed to be submitted.

TWO (2) bottles are required per entry. There is a 10 entry maximum.

Each wine MUST be labeled Pennsylvania Wine or AVA region according to TTB standards. Wine must also be currently available to purchase by the public.

The top wines and a selection of honorable mentions will be announced and promoted by the PWA shortly after the Judgment. A best white, best red, and best overall wine are also selected from the top wines. The celebration and media event, typically held in the fall, will not be occurring in 2020. Instead, the PWA will throw a virtual celebration to ensure our PA wineries and wines are well-represented.

Sommeliers also provide feedback on wines that are submitted, such as:

- What price range do you feel best reflects the quality of this wine? - Is this wine varietal correct? If not, what is missing? - Is this wine balanced? If not, what is out of balance? - Are there wine faults? If so, what faults are there? - Is this a wine you would consider for your program? Why or why not?

Finally, the PWA is exploring the introduction of a Hybrid category for the 2021 Sommelier Judgment. A link to a survey pertaining to this category is included in an accompanying email from the PWA. If you need access to the survey, you can also email [email protected] for the link.

• Wine must be labeled Pennsylvania Wine or AVA region according to TTB standards. • Vinifera and Sparkling only: must be 75% of Vinifera in any wine submission • Wine must be currently available to the public. • Must list the breakdown of the make-up of each wine in the WINE SUBMISSION section provided below. • TEN (10) entries maximum. • Winery will be required to submit TWO (2) bottles per entry, Red,

White, or Sparkling by a date closer to the Judgment. Information and instructions regarding wine shipping will be provided at a later date and with ample notice.
