Semua mata pelajaran dirancang mengikuti rumusan tersebut. Pembelajaran Sejarah Indonesia untuk Kelas XI jenjang Pendidikan Menengah yang disajikan dalam buku ini juga tunduk pada ketentuan tersebut. Sejarah Indonesia bukan berisi materi pembelajaran yang dirancang hanya untuk mengasah kompetensi pengetahuan peserta didik. Sejarah Indonesia adalah mata pelajaran yang membekali peserta didik dengan pengetahuan tentang dimensi ruang-waktu perjalanan sejarah Indonesia, keterampilan dalam menyajikan pengetahuan yang dikuasainya secara konkret dan abstrak, serta sikap menghargai jasa para pahlawan yang telah meletakkan pondasi bangunan negara Indonesia beserta segala bentuk warisan sejarah, baik benda maupun takbenda. Sehingga terbentuk pola pikir peserta didik yang sadar sejarah. Sebagai pelajaran wajib yang harus diambil oleh semua peserta didik yang belum tentu berminat dalam bidang sejarah, buku ini disusun menggunakan pendekatan regresif yang lebih populer. Melalui pengamatan terhadap kondisi sosial-budaya dan sejumlah warisan sejarah yang bisa dijumpai saat ini, peserta didik diajak mengarungi garis waktu mundur ke masa lampau saat terjadinya peristiwa yang melandasi terbentuknya peradaban yang melatar-belakangi kondisi sosial-budaya dan warisan sejarah tersebut. Pembahasan dilanjutkan dengan peristiwa-peristiwa berikutnya yang menyebabkan berkembang atau menyusutnya peradaban tersebut sehingga menjadi yang tersisa saat ini. Sejarah Indonesia iii Buku ini menjabarkan usaha minimal yang harus dilakukan peserta didik untuk mencapai kompetensi yang diharapkan. Sesuai dengan pendekatan yang digunakan dalam Kurikulum 2013, peserta didik diajak menjadi berani untuk mencari sumber belajar lain yang tersedia dan terbentang luas di sekitarnya. Peran guru dalam meningkatkan dan menyesuaikan daya serap peserta didik dengan ketersediaan kegiatan pada buku ini sangat penting. Guru dapat memperkayanya dengan kreasi dalam bentuk kegiatan-kegiatan lain yang sesuai dan relevan yang bersumber dari lingkungan sosial dan alam. Implementasi terbatas pada tahun ajaran 2013/2014 telah mendapat tanggapan yang sangat positif dan masukan yang sangat berharga. Pengalaman tersebut dipergunakan semaksimal mungkin dalam menyiapkan buku untuk implementasi menyeluruh pada tahun ajaran 2014/2015 dan seterusnya. Walaupun demikian, sebagai edisi pertama, buku ini sangat terbuka dan terus dilakukan perbaikan untuk penyempurnaan. This was the rally, the occasion of merry, pleas­ ant festivity. And here every speech was greeted with great applause. But this was not an ordinary festivity to which the Javanese were accustomed. For one thing, the rally was distinctly modem. Music and not gamelan sounded. Photographs were taken. People came to the place dressed as they liked—Javanese, European, and 'Turkish" (Arabic). The new book by Takashi Shiraishi, An Age in Motion: Popular Radicalism in Java, 1912- 1926} covers a period beginning with the founding of Sarekat Islam, usually labeled the first large-scale modem Indonesian political organization, and ending, fourteen years later, with what by broad and superficial consensus is categorized as the first in a series of uprisings of the Indonesian Communist Party. The geographical focus of the study is on the principality of Surakarta. Yet, the book can hardly be categorized as merely a new and well-researched study of the early Indonesian nationalist movement, nor can it be mistaken for just another regional history of Central Java.

Living in the centre of the Dutch empire multiple factions of Indonesians, each in their own words and actions, interacted with the world beyond the confines of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Foreign news reports in Dutch-Indonesian journals and concrete journeys of Indonesians abroad will be examined to describe the variety of worldviews within the Indonesian migrant community. The article also demonstrates that the Indonesians in the Netherlands serve as a telling example in the Dutch imperial context of Alan Lester’s remark that ‘colonised subjects themselves could and did forge new, anti-colonial networks of resistance, which similarly spanned imperial space’ (Alan Lester, ‘Imperial Circuits and Networks: Geographies of the British Empire’, History Compass 4:1 (2006) 134). On 30 August 1945, less than two weeks after the Indonesian Proklamasi of independence from the Netherlands, Mohammed Hatta, brother-in-arms of Sukarno, called upon his ‘old comrades wherever they may be’ to revive the spirit of unity among the colonised peoples of the world. Louro All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT This dissertation situates Indian nationalist politics in a broad, international context of anti-imperialist movements beginning in the late colonial and interwar period. The archival record is rich with sources on the international and transnational connections of the Indian National Congress (INC); however, scholarship on the independence movement almost exclusively concentrates on the micro-histories of ‘locality, province, and nation’ or the ‘subalterns’ of India. Instead, this project contributes a much-needed international perspective to Indian colonial history. As a case study, this dissertation traces the relationship between Jawaharlal Nehru, then a prominent leader of the Indian independence movement and later India’s first prime minister (1947-1964), and the League against Imperialism (LAI), a significant, yet little studied organization founded in Brussels in February 1927. The League offered a significant space for Nehru, and by extension the Indian National Congress, to interact and build partnerships with political leaders in other colonies, mandates and dependencies in Asia, Africa, and Latin America; as well as North American and European social reformers concerned with working class and racial equality.

The justification is simple—the Dutch authorities crushed the Partai Komunis Indonesia (PKI) completely after its unsuccessful revolts in 1927 and exercised tight political control in the remainder of the Dutch colonial period. Communism also played an insignificant role under the Japanese occupation due to the effective military suppression of clandestine activities. Historians commonly describe Indonesian communism during this period as generating lasting impact on Indonesian politics by providing a useful ideological weapon for carrying on anti-colonial struggles, but it lost its organizational significance as a cohesive force to mobilize the masses and gather them under the common political banner. Such claims are problematic for two main reasons: First, historical writings concerning Indonesia’s wide array of anti-colonial struggles, communism included, have been mostly following a nation-state-based paradigm; The second is that current scholarship tends to equate the history of Indonesian communism to the history of the communist party (PKI).
