Archaeological Heritage in Lithuania After the 1990S: Defining, Protecting, Interpreting 161
Archaeological Heritage in Lithuania after the 1990s: Defining, Protecting, Interpreting 161 Archaeological Heritage in Lithuania after the 1990s: Defining, Protecting, Interpreting Justina Poškienė Abstract The paper seeks to present developments in the state system of archaeological heritage protection in Lithu- ania after the 1990s. National legislation was essentially modified twice: in 1994 and in 2004. As- pects of defining (inventarisation, assessment and listing in the national Register of Cultural Properties), protecting (requirements for archaeological heritage protection, regulations on archaeological excavations’ procedures) and the interpreting of archaeological heritage (preservation of archaeological remains in situ) are under consideration. Keywords: archaeological heritage, assessment, archaeological excavations, in situ. Straipsnyje aptariami šie archeologinio paveldo apsaugos aspektai: apskaita (archeologinio paveldo vertinimas, įrašymas į Kultūros vertybių registrą, archeologinių objektų paveldosauginis statusas), ap- sauga (reikalavimai archeologiniams tyrimams, ardomųjų archeologinių tyrimų apimtys, archeologinių tyrimų kontrolės sistema) ir archeologinio paveldo interpretacija (archeologinio paveldo apsauga in situ). September 2018
Marian Thoughts of Pope Francis September 2018 September 2 – Angelus –Translated conclusion (September 1, 2018, Vatican.va). May the example and intercession of the Virgin Mary help us to always honour the Lord with our heart, witnessing to our love for him in concrete choices for the good of our brothers and sisters. September 5 – General Audience –Translated extract (September 5, 2028, Zenit.org). This choice is the Virgin Mary’s “fiat”, it’s openness to the Holy Spirit, who puts us in the steps of Christ, He who entrusts himself to the Father in the most dramatic moment and thus enters the way that leads to resurrection. September 6 – Audience (International Convention for Consecrated Widows) –Translated conclusion (September 6, 2018, Zenit.org). With this hope, I entrust you to the Lord and, through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, I impart to you my Apostolic Blessing, which I extend to those who are part of the Fraternité Notre Dame de la Résurrection and of the Communauté Anne la Prophetesse. September 9 – Audience (To Participants at the Communio Internationalis Benedictinarum Symposium) –Translated extract (September 9, 2018, Zenit.org). You bring a precious gift to the life of the Church through your feminine witness of goodness, faith, and generosity, imitating the Holy Mother of the Church, the Virgin Mary. You are icons of the Church and of our Blessed Mother: do not forget this. Travelling in Aukštaitija National Park
AukštAITIJA NATIONAL PARK INVITES TO TRAVEL! Aukštaitija National Park (ANP) has a unique landscape of hilly lakeland characterized by great natural diversity and cultural heritage that is one of the oldest in Lithuania. This hilly lakeland area that has been formed by glaciers consists of interconnecting lakes with interfering ridges. The most picturesque is Šiliniškės Ridge with Ladakalnis fa- mous for its exceptional panoramic view, and historical complex of Ginučiai, Papiliakalnė Mound. There are 127 lakes in the parks, including the deepest Lithuanian lake - Taura- gnas. They serve as the headwaters for the river Žeimena that feeds the largest Lithuanian rivers Neris and Nemunas. The striking terrain and the cultural landscape that were formed as a result of human economic activity have determined the diversity of natural conditions and species. There are more than 4.5 thousands of plant, fungus and animal species registered in the park, and 195 of them are included in the Lithuanian Red Book. One of the most valuable and least affected by human activity territory is the old forest of Ažvinčiai. Baluošas lake is unique in that it has a lake laying in one of the islands, and wild orchids growing on the coast the most impressive being lady’s slippers (Cypripedium calceolus). The cultural heritage of this region is characterized by the largest number of prehis- toric settlements and barrows in Lithuania, the mounds of Tauragnai, Taurapilis, Sėlė, Ginučiai, Papiliakalnė, Puziniškis, and Rėkučiai fortification forming an entire system of defence, and dispersed villages of Strazdai, Šuminai, Varniškės, Vaišnoriškės and Salos that have retained their traditional arrangement. -

The Political and Social Consequences of Romas Kalanta's
A Death Transformed: The Political and Social Consequences of Romas Kalanta’s Self Immolation, Soviet Lithuania, 1972 Amanda Jeanne Swain A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2013 Reading Committee: Glennys Young, Chair James Felak Guntis Smidchens Program Authorized to Offer Degree: History © Copyright 2013 Amanda Jeanne Swain University of Washington Abstract A Death Transformed: The Political and Social Consequences of Romas Kalanta’s Self Immolation, Soviet Lithuania, 1972 Amanda Jeanne Swain Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Glennys Young History “A Death Transformed: The Political and Social Consequences of Romas Kalanta’s Self- Immolation, Soviet Lithuania, 1972” explores Soviet and post-Soviet interpretive narratives and political practices in response to two days of street demonstrations that followed the 1972 suicide of a nineteen-year-old man in Soviet Lithuania. My analysis reveals that Communist authorities and participating youth viewed the demonstrations as a struggle over the acceptable boundaries and content of modern Soviet youth culture. Despite extensive evidence that by 1972 youth were actively negotiating the boundaries of what were acceptable activities, Communist authorities and young people operated within an ideological framework that denied young people’s capacity to express discontent with the Soviet system. In post-Communist Lithuania, social and political elites constructed narratives of May 1972 that reclaimed agency by representing the demonstrations alternatively as nationalist dissent, civil resistance or Sixties-style youth protest. The diversity of narratives reflected on-going debates about the nature of post-Communist Lithuanian identity. This work seeks to make significant contributions to the historiography of the Soviet Union and to scholarship on the politics of memory and European integration. -
Pilies Street in Medieval Vilnius 3 4 Pilies Street Is One of the Oldest in the City of Vilnius, the Capital of the 5 Grand Duchy of Lithuania
2021-4367-HIS 1 Between Greeks and Latins: 2 Pilies Street in Medieval Vilnius 3 4 Pilies Street is one of the oldest in the city of Vilnius, the capital of the 5 Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The street’s name is connected with its starting 6 point, the territory of the castles of the grand dukes. In the early 15th century, 7 Vilnius City Hall was erected at the south end of Pilies Street. Pilies Street is 8 not only an inseparable part of the city’s earliest spatial structure, but is 9 also directly connected with the Christian communities of Vilnius, when it 10 was still a pagan city. During the earliest period of the city’s development 11 Christian immigrants, both Orthodox and Catholic, gathered around Pilies 12 Street. The paradox is that very little information is available about the 13 emergence and formation of the central street of the city. The purpose of this 14 paper is to examine more carefully the early history of what is perhaps the 15 main street in Vilnius and the changes over the course of time. This becomes 16 possible after combining archaeological material with the sparse 17 information from written sources, and also after making use of data from the 18 investigation of the historical natural environment. 19 20 Keywords: Middle Ages, Pagans, Orthodox, Catholics, urban topography 21 22 23 Introduction 24 25 Pilies (Castle) Street (Fig. 1, red line) is one of the oldest arteries in the 26 city of Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. As an object of applied art and anthropogenic activity, LA, as well as its research is an important area for natural, anthropogenic, social and economic sustainability. The study of THG problems today is based on the innate human right to live in a har- monious space of both aesthetic material and natural environment. Aesthetic quality criteria are important for understanding the systemic relationships between nature and human interaction embodied in LA as an applied art form. Therefore, the anthropogenic objects of LA and the spaces formed by them in the urban environment require studies of the material and natural environment and the anthropogenic functioning as a whole. Based on heuristic, qualitative and quantitative research methods and case studies, the article discusses the problems of interaction between present anthropogenic and natural processes, as well as the possible influence of such interactions on scenarios of LA development and future management of the territory of historical greenery. -
