VYTAUTAS MAGNUS UNIVERSITY – WHEN? WHERE? WHY? 8 9 In February 1922, the Lithuanian Govern- ment of Ministers decided to establish the University of Lithuania in Kaunas. The ceremonial opening of the university took place on February 16, 1922. On June 7, 1930, the university was named Vytautas Magnus University. It was closed during the Soviet occupation. The act of re-establishing Vytau- tas Magnus University was proclaimed on April 28, 1989. During the university’s first decade the number of students and teachers grew more than twenty times. National legislation was essentially modified twice: in 1994 and in 2004. As- pects of defining (inventarisation, assessment and listing in the national Register of Cultural Properties), protecting (requirements for archaeological heritage protection, regulations on archaeological excavations’ procedures) and the interpreting of archaeological heritage (preservation of archaeological remains in situ) are under consideration. Keywords: archaeological heritage, assessment, archaeological excavations, in situ. Straipsnyje aptariami šie archeologinio paveldo apsaugos aspektai: apskaita (archeologinio paveldo vertinimas, įrašymas į Kultūros vertybių registrą, archeologinių objektų paveldosauginis statusas), ap- sauga (reikalavimai archeologiniams tyrimams, ardomųjų archeologinių tyrimų apimtys, archeologinių tyrimų kontrolės sistema) ir archeologinio paveldo interpretacija (archeologinio paveldo apsauga in situ). History of the Crusades. Episode 280. The Baltic Crusades. The Samogitian Crusade Part XIII. The Siege of Kaunas 1362. Hello again. Last week, we saw an effort by the Archbishop of Prague to convert the Lithuanian leaders to Christianity fail spectacularly, with the two pagan brothers making outrageous demands in return for their baptism, then laughing at and mocking the delegation when they objected. The upshot of this event was that converting the Lithuanians to Christianity by peaceful means was now permanently off the table as a goal to be pursued, so the only option left on the table was to convert the pagans by force. The Teutonic Order then spent time and effort constructing a bunch of new castles in Samogitia, which would provide a larger, more permanent Latin Christian presence in the region. Then, in the spring of the year 1362, fighting men from across Prussia, along with crusaders from Germany, Italy and England, gathered in Prussia, ready to head to Samogitia. This was to be a major Crusading expedition. William Urban describes it in his book "The Samogitian Crusade" as being a, and I quote, "huge force" end quote. Now you will notice that the Crusaders are departing in spring, not winter. That's because they don't need to ride across frozen rivers and swamps to get to Samogitia. Why don't they need to ride across frozen rivers and swamps to get to Samogitia? Well, because they are sailing there. Yes, in a novel break from tradition, the Grand Master and the Marshall of the Teutonic forces have come up with a plan to get everyone on board ships.

KAUNAS CASTLE FROM ANOTHER PERSPECTIVE: THE CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF IRON CONSTRUCTION ELEMENTS EGLĖ RIMKIENĖ Kaunas Castle from Another Another Kaunas Castle from Perspective: the Chemical Composition of Iron Construction Elements Abstract The chemical composition of iron construction elements is not usually a topic of interest in Medieval archaeology. This article EGLĖ EGLĖ RIMKIENĖ focuses attention on the chemical composition of iron elements such as nails. For compositional analysis, the XRF method was used. A comparison was made between XRF results and physical measurements. The aim of this article was to identify the amount of iron in metal elements that were possibly used in constructing castles, and to find a connection between the chemical composition of objects and their physical measurements. Key words: Portable XRF, chemical composition, iron, metallurgy, Kaunas castle, Medieval period. • Kaunas: the Founding Legend According to an Old Legend, the City
Kaunas: The Founding Legend According to an old legend, the city of Kaunas – the second largest in Lithuania – was founded by the Romans. As the story goes, a Roman patrician by the name of Palemon fled Ancient Rome fearing the murderous hand of Emperor Nero. He took his three sons with him – Barcus, Kunas, and Sperus – and travelled all the way up north until he reached the tribal lands that later became Lithuania. After Palemon’s death, his sons divided the land among themselves. Kunas got the land where Kaunas now stands and built a fortress where the rivers Nemunas and Neris meet. The city that grew around the area was thus named after him. The legend also claims that the present suburb of Palemonas bears the name of the Roman who had reached these faraway lands many centuries ago. Kaunas Today Welcome to Kaunas, the city that has best preserved the old-school Lithuanian national character! Feast here! Kaunas is home to a variety of festivals and events, including the famous Kaunas Jazz festival, Hanza days, Operetta, Pažaislis Classical Music festival, Bike show, Kaunas city days, Songs festival (listed by UNESCO), International Modern Dance Festival and much more. Kaunas is also known as a city of students. Universities in Kaunas are among the country’s top universities, offering high quality yet inexpensive courses and degrees. Make a wish! The beautiful confluence of Lithuania’s two largest rivers is known for its magical powers on couples: the rivers meet in Kaunas and run the rest of their course together, never ever breaking apart.
