Introduction Remember us? Yes, we are the same citizens of Kaunas with a wish TO RETURN OUR CITY TO EU- ROPE by competing for the title of Europe- an Capital of Culture in the second round. And this is to assure you that our wish has grown even stronger. After nearly two years of intensive map- ping and studying, discussions with com- munities of the City, public meetings with artists, city officials, minorities, students, school children, clergy, elderly citizens and the press, our team has gone a long way and now there’s a lot more of us. We have learnt that behind our City there are builders, invaders, defenders, tyrants and jokers. Behind every inferiority com- plex we have here as previously multicul- tural capital city, but for many years now – sterilised, neglected and bullied second city is a personal and very intimate drama. Kaunas is not a proud city, and Kaunas is not a miserable city even though it still # has reputation as being such. To evaluate patients’ opinion about the accessibility of the provided services in private primary healthcare institutions of Kaunas city. The contingent and the methods of the study. The study was conducted in 2009. A questionnaire survey involving 280 people was carried out. All of them were registered with family physicians at primary health care institutions. For the study, we used 20-item anonymous questionnaires which focused on the availability of services provided by primary health care institutions. The studied attributes were described as relative values expressed as percentage, and 95 % confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. The chi-square criterion was applied for the comparison of the distribution of the analyzed features among the clinics. Results. The study showed that 73.5 % (95 % CI=68.3–78.7 %) of the respondents spent up to half an hour to reach their health care institutions. Also, 61.8 % (95 % CI=56.1–67.5 %) of the respondents indicated that they spent less than 5 minutes when waiting at the reception, while 58.4 % (95 % CI=52.6–64.2 %) of the respondents stated that they spent over 15 minutes when waiting at a family physician’s office door. The survey also showed that 41.9 % (95 % CI=36.1– 47.6 %) of the patients thought that waiting lines at primary healthcare institutions were inevitable.

    Ezra’s Archives | 77 Strategies of Survival: Lithuanian Jews and the Holocaust Taly Matiteyahu On the eve of World War II, Lithuanian Jewry numbered approximately 220,000. In June 1941, the war between Germany and the Soviet Union began. Within days, Germany had occupied the entirety of Lithuania. By the end of 1941, only about 43,500 Lithuanian Jews (19.7 percent of the prewar population) remained alive, the majority of whom were kept in four ghettos (Vilnius, Kaunas, Siauliai, Svencionys). Of these 43,500 Jews, approximately 13,000 survived the war. Ultimately, it is estimated that 94 percent of Lithuanian Jewry died during the Holocaust, a percentage higher than in any other occupied Eastern European country.1 Stories of Lithuanian towns and the manner in which Lithuanian Jews responded to the genocide have been overlooked as the perpetrator- focused version of history examines only the consequences of the Holocaust. Through a study utilizing both historical analysis and testimonial information, I seek to reconstruct the histories of Lithuanian Jewish communities of smaller towns to further understand the survival strategies of their inhabitants. I examined a variety of sources, ranging from scholarly studies to government-issued pamphlets, written testimonies and video testimonials. My project centers on a collection of 1 Population estimates for Lithuanian Jews range from 200,000 to 250,000, percentages of those killed during Nazi occupation range from 90 percent to 95 percent, and approximations of the number of survivors range from 8,000 to 20,000.     KAUNO GYVENTOJŲ APLINKOS IR SVEIKATOS PILOTINIS TYRIMAS Sandra Andrušaitytė*, Regina Gražulevičienė, Audrius Dėdelė Vytauto Didžiojo Universiteto Gamtos mokslų fakultetas Sandra Andrušaitytė ([email protected]) 1 http://citieshealth.vdu.lt/ Įvadas Dauguma socialinių mokslų projektų siekia įtraukti bendruomenes į mokslinių tyrimų planavimą, duomenų rinkimą ir duomenų analizės procesus. Tačiau iki šiol nėra pakankamai pagrįstų įrodymų apie gyvenamosios aplinkos kokybės poveikį miestiečių sveikatai, su kenksmingais aplinkos veiksniais susijusias lėtines ligas. Atlikti epidemiologiniai tyrimai nustatė, kad kontaktas su gamtine aplinka turi teigiamą poveikį žmonių sveikatai, pagerėja psichinė sveikata, sumažėja širdies ir kraujagyslių ligų, nutukimo, diabeto rizika ir rizika, susijusi su mirtingumu nuo visų priežasčių. Tačiau iki šiol stokojama tyrimų, pagrindžiančių ryšį tarp gyvenamosios aplinkos kokybės ir savo sveikatos vertinimo. Kaune įgyvendinant Europos Komisijos HORIZON-2020 programos projektą „Miestų sveikata, miestiečių aplinkos ir sveikatos moksliniai tyrimai - CitieS Health“, bus siekiama įtraukti miestiečius į tyrimą ir išsiaiškinti gyvenamosios aplinkos poveikį jų sveikatai. 2 Tikslas Nustatyti miestiečių gyvenamosios aplinkos kokybės ryšį su sveikata ir atsakyti į klausimą: kodėl kai kuriose Kauno miesto seniūnijose miestiečiai dažniau savo sveikatą vertina kaip „bloga sveikata“. 3 Metodika ● Informacija apie projektą ir kvietimas dalyvauti tyrime buvo paskelbti Kauno pilotinės studijos internetiniame puslapyje (http://citieshealth.vdu.lt/),
