Shelter Harbor Club Earns Top Honors from Only Rhode Island Course recognized, Shelter Harbor ranks 19th in the magazine’s annual list of the Best New Courses in the U.S. CHARLESTOWN, R.I. (October 30, 2006) – Shelter Harbor Golf Club, the first new private along Rhode Island’s southeasterly shores in a half-century, was named to Golfweek’s annual list of the Best New Courses in the U.S.

Shelter Harbor ranked 19th on the list of the top-50 Best New Courses, according to results released in the Oct. 28 issue of Golfweek, and was the only Rhode Island course to make the list. The magazine’s rankings are available at http://www.golfweek.com/destinations/features/287356369337906.php.

“We’re very pleased with the honor,’’ said Shelter Harbor general manager Bob Pescatore. “This is added confirmation of what many of us believe – that Shelter Harbor is one of the finest courses in the area.’’

Designed by noted architects Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry, Shelter Harbor is set upon one of the state’s highest promontories and winds through various terrains.

Golfweek Senior Writer Brad Klein, who oversees the magazine’s ratings panel, reviewed Shelter Harbor earlier this year and wrote, “It’s no easy task making a 44,000-square-foot clubhouse look cozy, but such is the design quality of this Shinnecock-inspired building. More impressive is the golf course, which has a fascinating array of shotmaking demands, including a short, driveable, up-and-over -4 seventh hole to a punchbowl green that is virtually impossible to hold.’’

Golfweek’s list features courses that opened in 2004-05. Criteria for the magazine’s ratings panel was based on routing; quality of shaping; overall land plan; greens and surrounds; variety of memorability of par-3s, par-4s and par-5s; tree and landscaping management, conditioning and a ”walk in the park’’ test.
