And once again the generous support of the Stauffer Foundation and the Cremona Town Coun- cil and Chamber of Commerce have made this im- portant event possible. Cremona is an obligatory destination and holds a special place in the hearts of every string player evoking the essence of all that is sublime in the art of string instruments. Besides attending lectures on various aspects of teaching, workshops, masterclasses and concerts, each participant at the congress will experience the environment where our instruments were born and where the most illustrious violin makers, un- surpassed in their art, lived and worked. They will find many examples of these precious instruments at the Museo del Violino and wandering around the city visiting palaces and violin makers’ work- shops they will relive the eco of past times in this ideal atmosphere. May I wish you all a week immersed in beauty, harmony, enrichment, exchanges and conviviality with musicians from all over the world. Bruno Giuranna President of ESTA International 47th International ESTA Conference - 7 A greeting from the President of ESTA Italia Dear Members, Welcome to the 47th International ESTA Confer- ence in Cremona. ESTA Italia is proud to host the conference once again in the quintessential city of violin making after the great success 12 years ago. This year’s varied programme has for its theme String Teaching and Inclusion and aims to offer the widest possible range of contributions in string teaching, performance, special projects and instrumental awareness from a distinguished list of artists and lecturers. Aleksey Igudesman has prepared an engaging event with mass participa- tion that will see hundreds of ESTA members and students celebrate their passion for music before a vast audience in Piazza del Comune on Sunday 28th April. All this is possible thanks to the incredible support and enthusiasm of a dedicated group of people from the city itself, unsung heroes from the Town Council, the Chamber of Commerce and the Prov- ince of Cremona who together with numerous other townspeople embraced our project drawing on all available resources. A special thanks goes to the Stauffer Foundation whose generous support is inestimable and to the Regione Lombardia who backed our project whole heartedly. We hope that this congress will give you the oppor- tunity to live this city in its entirety. You will see that the world of string instruments is omnipresent and that it interacts with all aspects of daily life. Make sure you discover the many other delights that Cremona has to offer with its rich artistic and his- torical links and culinary traditions. Wishing you an enjoyable and memorable stay and looking forward to sharing a stimulating week with fellow musicians who have come from all corners of the earth. Jill Comerford President of ESTA Italia 8 - 47th International ESTA Conference A greeting from the Director of the Cremona Conservatorium “Claudio Monteverdi” When ESTA International Conference took place in Cremona in 2007, the Institute for Advanced Musi- cal Studies “Claudio Monteverdi”, Cremona’s Con- servatorium, was taking its first steps in the Higher Education Field. Thanks to the work of teachers and the governance, supported by the Municipal- ity and Walter Stauffer Foundation, nowadays the Monteverdi Conservatoire is a well established in- stitution, part of the Cremona Music Educational System which ranges from nursery school to uni- versity. It has strong connections with important national music institutions and is member of the Cultural District of Violin Making to which the Mu- nicipality itself, Violin Museum Foundation, Walter Stauffer Foundation, Stradivarius International School of Violin Making, Musicology Department attached to Pavia University, Ponchielli Theatre, the Monteverdi Festival, Politecnico Milano and of course violin makers adhere, as well as being a member of Cremona Baroque Project. Since the Monteverdi Conservatorium is now launched into an international context with the Higher Educa- tion Institution’s Mobility Erasmus Programme, it assures the quality standards required by the Eu- ropean Union. That is why we are so proud to have established a scientific collaboration with ESTA in 47th Interna- tional Conference, under the aegis of the Italian Ministry of Education, promoting Didactics Semi- nars at the Conference through the Italian Educa- tional System’s official channels. Associations of ESTA’s calibre are an essential resource in didac- tic innovation and in the internationalization of learning processes. A warm welcome in Cremona, enjoy your stay! Anne Colette Ricciardi Director ISSM “Claudio Monteverdi” Cremona Conservatorium 47th International ESTA Conference - 9 A greeting from the Regional Minister of Tourism, Territorial Marketing and Fashion The ESTA conference is viewed as an event of re- markable importance which has been chosen thanks to the interest displayed by the Explora project to valorise events which are considered significant occasions for the promotion of terri- torial tourism. Cremona is a city of considerable potential in the areas of tourism, culture and eno- gastronomy, and the international conference of string teachers will once again highlight music and the age-old art of Cremonese violin-making, des- ignated Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, which represents one of the many fields of excellence for which Lombardy is famous both in Italy and the world. Lara Magoni Regional Minister of Tourism, Territorial Marketing and Fashion 10 - 47th International ESTA Conference A greeting from the Lord Mayor of CREMONA The fact that ESTA International has decided to choose Cremona for the second time in more or less 10 years for its annual congress is a great hon- our for us. Music lives thanks to the special relationships be- tween teachers and their students. Teaching music means innovating a vital human heritage, training new teachers and talented pro- fessionals, and cultivating an art that uplifts a person’s most intimate human nature as well as contributing to the community spirit through its inclusive and cohesive strength. Why was Cremona chosen for the second time? Because our town is in the process of creating new and important projects in the sector of music ed- ucation and by virtue of its Cultural District of Vio- lin-Making, its Violin-making workshops, schools, music academy and other cultural institutions. Cremona can really be considered the capital city of music, stringed instruments and sound and is something of which to be extremely proud. My sincerest thanks go to to the Deputy Lord May- or Ms. Maura Ruggeri and her staff for their tireless
