Vlastimil Vohánka Modality, Logical Probability, and the Trinity: A Defence of Weak Skepticism MODALITA, LOGICKÁ PRAVDĚPODOBNOST A TROJICE: OBHAJOBA UMÍRNĚNÉHO SKEPTICISMU Dissertation thesis Study program: Philosophy Supervisor: Prof. PhDr. et RNDr. Jan Štěpán, CSc. Olomouc 2011 1 Statement I declare that I wrote this dissertation on my own and that I cited all used sources. Olomouc, ............................... Vlastimil Vohánka ............................... 2 Abstract (EN) The author defends the thesis that, apart from religious experience, it cannot be evident – in a defined sense of psychological impossibility – that the Trinity doctrine is logically possible. The Trinity doctrine is understood broadly, as the proposition that there is just one God but three persons each of which is God. It is concluded that, apart from religious experience, none of the following claims can be evident: the Trinity doctrine is true; Christianity is true; the Trinity doctrine is logically possible; Christianity is logically possible; the Trinity doctrine has some but not minimal (zero) logical probability with respect to all that is evident; Christianity has some but not minimal logical probability with respect to all that is evident. Christianity is understood as a particular compound proposition including the Trinity doctrine. Replies are provided to objections against the employed principles of logical probability. The author leaves as undecided whether the Trinity doctrine, Christianity, or their logical possibility are: epistemically justified; well-argued; plausibly logically probable with respect to all that is evident (though not evidently logically probable on such information apart from religious experience); or probable in other than the logical sense.

  • Truth and Truthmaking in 17Th-Century Scholasticism
Truth and Truthmaking in 17th-Century Scholasticism by Brian Embry A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Philosophy University of Toronto © Copyright by Brian Embry 2015 Truth and Truthmaking in 17th-Century Scholasticism Brian Embry Doctor of Philosophy Department of Philosophy University of Toronto 2015 Abstract Some propositions are true and others are false. What explains this difference? Some philosophers have recently defended the view that a proposition is true because there is an entity, its truthmaker, that makes it true. Call this the ‘truthmaker principle’. The truthmaker principle is controversial, occasioning the rise of a large contemporary debate about the nature of truthmaking and truthmakers. What has gone largely unnoticed is that scholastics of the early modern period also had the notion of a truthmaker [verificativum], and this notion is at the center of early modern scholastic disputes about the ontological status of negative entities, the past and future, and uninstantiated essences. My project is to explain how early modern scholastics conceive of truthmaking and to show how they use the notion of a truthmaker to regiment ontological enquiry. I argue that the notion of a truthmaker is born of a certain conception of truth according to which truth is a mereological sum of a true mental sentence and its intentional object. This view entails the truthmaker principle and is responsible for some surprising metaphysical views. For example, it leads many early modern scholastics to posit irreducible negative entities as truthmakers for negative truths, giving rise to an extensive literature on the nature of negative entities.

A Jesuit Debate about the Modes of Union: Francisco Suárez vs. Pedro Hurtado de Mendoza Jean-Pascal Anfray Abstract. In this paper, I examine a neglected debate between Francisco Suárez and Pedro Hurtado de Mendoza about the unity of composite substances (i.e., hylomorphic compounds of matter and form). There was a consensus among the Jesuits on the fact that the per se unity of composite substances requires something in addition to matter and form. Like most Jesuits, Suárez and Hurtado further agree on the fact that this additional ingredient is not a full-blown thing, but a “mode of union.” However, while Suárez claims that the union is achieved through a single mode, Hurtado maintains that it is necessary to postulate two distinct modes of union, one modifying form and another modifying matter.

Last revision: May 4, 2012 Rodrigo de Arriaga CURSUS PHILOSOPHICUS, DISPUTATIONES LOGICAE, LIB. 5, DISP. 121 © Sydney Penner 2012 <161><<188>> BOOK FIVE ON THE CATEGORIES. A category ( praedicamentum) is the same thing as a series of predicates ( prae- dicatorum) drawn down from the highest genus through the intermediate genera and species all the way to the ultimate individuals, as, for example, the series of substance is drawn down through substance, body, living thing, animal, and human being, all the way to Peter. And this series is called the category of substance. Aristotle reduces all se- ries of things to ten categories, which he discussed at great length in the present [work]. The ten categories are substance, quantity, quality, relation, action, passion, where, duration, place, habit. He does not include the ratio of being in these categories, since it is superior to all of them and consequently does not constitute a category distinct from them. Notice, however, that, just as Aristotle sets up these ten categories, he could have set up more or far fewer categories. For he could have restricted them to two, e.g., to substance and accident. For these comprehend everything. Or if he wished to descend to lower rationes, he could have come up with far more than ten. For just as he reduces being clothed to a distinct category that he labels ‘habit’, why could he not have also posited being decorated (of temples and walls and so on, for example), being musical, healthy, drunk, sober, and so forth. For these can be separate just as well as habit and so on can be.

  • Heidegger's Project of a Metaphysics of Daseini François Jaran
Toward a Metaphysical Freedom: Heidegger’s Project of a Metaphysics of Daseini François Jaran International Journal of Philosophical Studies Vol. 18(2), 205–227 [Pre-print] Abstract The ‘Metaphysics of Dasein’ is the name which Heidegger gave to a new philosophical project developed immediately after the partial publication of his masterwork Being and Time (1927). As Heidegger was later to recall, an ‘overturning’ took place at that moment, more precisely right in the middle of the 1929 treatise On the Essence of Ground. Between the fundamental-ontological formulation of the question of being and its metaphysical rephrasing, Heidegger discovered that a ‘metaphysical freedom’ stood at the root of Dasein’s relation to his world and, thus, at the basis of his whole ontological questioning. This article will show how the very structure of the 1929 essay clearly illustrates the path Heidegger followed between Being and Time and the new philosophical beginning of the mid-1930s. It will conclude with a few critical remarks concerning Heidegger’s attempt to free his thinking from traditional philosophy and to overcome metaphysics. Keywords: Heidegger; Metaphysics; Dasein; Freedom; Transcendence; Turning Introduction As soon as Heidegger finished the writing of his masterwork Sein und Zeit, somewhere in the fall of 1926, a shift occurred in his use of the term ‘metaphysics’. We have to recall that Sein und Zeit was written against ‘metaphysics’. The first line of the book left no doubt: ‘The question [of being] has today been forgotten—although our time considers itself progressive in again affirming “metaphysics”’ (Heidegger, 2001a: p. 2/1).ii Heidegger refers here to a ‘resurrection of metaphysics’ that gained popularity at the beginning of the 20th century with authors such as Georg Simmel, Nicolai Hartmann or Peter Wust (who in 1920 wrote a book called Die Auferstehung der Metaphysik).
