Becoming Taiwanese: Negotiating Language, Culture and Identity Ying-Chuan Chen Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a doctoral degree in Education Society, Culture, and Literacies Concentration Faculty of Education University of Ottawa © Ying-Chuan Chen, Ottawa, Canada, 2013 Abstract Between 1945 and 1987, as part of its efforts to impose a Chinese identity on native-born Taiwanese and to establish and maintain hegemony, Chiang Kai-shek‘s Kuomintang (KMT) government pursued a unilingual, Mandarin-only policy in education. This thesis studies the changing meaning of ―becoming Taiwanese‖ by examining the school experiences of four generations of Taiyu speakers who went to school during the Mandarin-only era: 1) those who also went to school under the Japanese; 2) those who went to school before 1949 when Taiwan was part of KMT-controlled China; 3) those who went to school during the 1950s at the height of the implementation of KMT rule; and, 4) those who went to school when Mandarin had become the dominant language. Two data types, interviews and public documents, are analyzed using two research methods, focus group interviews as the primary one, and document analysis as the secondary one. This research found that there is no direct relationship between how people negotiated language, hegemony and Taiwanese identity. First, as KMT hegemony became more secure, people‘s links to their home language became weaker, so their view of Taiwanese identity as defined by Taiyu changed. Second, as exposure to hegemonic forces deepened over time, people were less able to find cultural spaces that allowed escape from hegemonic influences, and this, along with other life-course factors such as occupation, had an impact on their contestations of language and identity. -

Application Guidelines for English Teaching Volunteer Service Program for Overseas Youth 2021 SPONSORS Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC), Republic of China (Taiwan) Ministry of Education (MOE), Republic of China (Taiwan) Hakka Affairs Council (HAC), Republic of China (Taiwan) Council of Indigenous Peoples (CIP), Republic of China (Taiwan) APPLICATION PERIOD Application period: February 1st to March 31st, 2021. Applications must be received by the registration offices on or before March 31st, 2021. PROGRAM ACTIVITIES The program will be held from July 5th to July 23rd, 2021. We are looking for 194 volunteers (including 30 volunteers of Hakka origin). Please note that applicants must prep for the program activities online in advance. Applicants must: (1) Finish watching all 20 online tutorial videos (400 minutes total) prepared by MOE by June 25th which will be available in early June. (2) Work with local volunteers at least twice during June 28th to July 2nd and another 3 times during July 5th to July 9th in preparation for class. Each session ranges from 1 to 2 hours. (3) Teaching English online each day for 1 to 2 hours during July 12th to 23rd. QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPLICATION (1)Applicants must be in the 11th grade or above at the time of application and between the ages of 17 and 25 (as shown on passport) by November 30th, 2021. (2)Applicants must currently reside in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Ireland, South Africa or Belize and speak English as their first language. (3)Applicants must be highly motivated and have basic communication skills of spoken Mandarin. -
Patriotic Songs in Primary School Textbooks in Taiwan from 1949–1987
australiaa n societ s y fo r mumsic education e Patriotic songs in primary school i ncorporated textbooks in Taiwan from 1949–1987 Angela Lee Department of the Early Childhood Education and Care, Transworld University, Taiwan Abstract This study focused on the inclusion of patriotic songs in schooling that were popular in Taiwan between 1949 and 1987. Many patriotic songs were composed after 1949, and these frequently found their way into primary textbooks. School curriculum policies such as ‘education for patriotism’ cultivate Chinese consciousness among Taiwanese students (Yang, 2001). An analysis of these patriotic songs elucidates their qualities and character and explores how patriotism permeated school song texts. These factors can be considered through an examination of school textbooks produced after the Chinese restoration: Music 1952, Music 1968, and Music 1975 for primary schools. The findings of this study show that during 1949 to 1987, the inclusion of patriotic songs in the school curriculum, had everything to do with the cultivation of national sentiment and loyal service toward the mainland, and sacrifice for one’s country. The findings confirm Hebert and Kertz-Welzel’s (2012) assertion that music clearly contributes to the conditions in which individuals are more susceptible to the emotional appeal of mass movements, which is why all across the world music has for so long played such an enduring and prominent role in the political spheres. Frontier Politics And Sino-Soviet Relations: A Study Of Northwestern Xinjiang, 1949-1963 Abstract This is an ethnopolitical and diplomatic study of the Three Districts, or the former East Turkestan Republic, in China’s northwest frontier in the 1950s and 1960s. It describes how this Muslim borderland between Central Asia and China became today’s Yili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture under the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. The Three Districts had been in the Soviet sphere of influence since the 1930s and remained so even after the Chinese Communist takeover in October 1949. After the Sino- Soviet split in the late 1950s, Beijing transformed a fragile suzerainty into full sovereignty over this region: the transitional population in Xinjiang was demarcated, border defenses were established, and Soviet consulates were forced to withdraw. As a result, the Three Districts changed from a Soviet frontier to a Chinese one, and Xinjiang’s outward focus moved from Soviet Central Asia to China proper. The largely peaceful integration of Xinjiang into PRC China stands in stark contrast to what occurred in Outer Mongolia and Tibet. -

Created when an increasing number of women turned to the scholarly arts, in particular painting and poetry, these paintings documented the more receptive attitude of literati toward talented women and their support in the social and artistic lives of female intellectuals. These pictures show the women cultivating themselves through literati activities and poetic meditation in nature or gardens, common tropes in portraits of male scholars. The predominantly male patrons, painters, and colophon authors all took part in the formation of the women’s public identities as poets and artists; the first two determined the visual representations, and the third, through writings, confirmed and elaborated on the designated identities. -

Their disapproval manifested itself in the eruption of small-scale de - monstrations and in the expression of differences of opinion and individual experiences in the cybersphere. As actors, internet users took on the role of citizen’s watch and people’s judge and revealed, through a critique of the three projects, the failings and tensions present in represen - tative democracy both in terms of cultural identity and procedural mechanisms, highlighting opposed values of the various social agents. In Taiwan, the Hakka community of Gaoyuan in Taoyuan City, where a traditional farm pond was recently transformed into a public, multi-functional UA resource, is widely regarded as the first successful bottom-up, community-led, farm-pond-based UA in Taiwan, yet its actual performance is rarely explored in any depth. Little work has been done to provide details on the socio-ecological benefits of UA in the community redevelopment process. Through in-depth interviews, fieldwork, and participant observation, this specific qualitative study aims to explore the community champions’ experiences in the transformation leading to a revitalized community. First, by linking nearby nature to people, a green network of diverse spaces, low-impact landscaping, and an agricultural-community-like pondscape, the specific landscape character that makes UA in Gaoyuan distinctive is formed.
