Prof. Dr. Pelin Yoncacı Arslan October 2019, 228 pages The Aqueduct of Valens is one of the surviving urban elements referring back to the historical layers of the city of Istanbul. In the early Byzantine era, the intra-mural water bridge was constructed as a part of the longest Roman waterlines reaching from the Thracian Peninsula. During the Byzantine and Ottoman periods, the Aqueduct maintained its critical operation for supplying water and, at the same time protected its urban presence in the urban topography. It developed into an urban monument as a distinctive feature of the Byzantine cityscape and a complementary memorial of the subsequent Ottoman capital. With the promise of analyzing the status of the Byzantine Aqueduct of Valens in the urban space of Ottoman Istanbul, this thesis aims to investigate the depictions of the monument and analyze its cultural, spatial and urban interactions in the ever-changing imperial topography. Under the light of visual documents such as maps, panoramas, miniatures and other forms of illustrations, and by a framing timeline from the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries, this study appreciates the ‘timeless monumentality’ of the Aqueduct of Valens in the city of Istanbul. Arif Gurel*, Kasim Yenigun and R. Kadir Pekgokgoz Faculty of Engineering, Harran University, Civil Engineering Department, Osmanbey Campus, 63190, Sanliurfa, Turkey. Accepted 17 September, 2010 The Bozdogan (Valens) aqueduct in Istanbul is one of the most prominent water supply structures inherited from the Byzantine period. The paper investigates the out-of-plane seismic resistance of the aqueduct. The structural system of the aqueduct is composed of a series of piers connected to each other with arches at two tier levels. Taking advantage of the structural periodicity, only one pier of the highest part of the aqueduct is considered for the analysis instead of the whole structure. This pier is modelled as a cantilever prismatic element subjected to gravity load and increasing lateral load representing out-of-plane seismic loading. It is assumed that the pier is made of a no-tension material, with a linear stress-strain relationship in compression, and has infinite compression strength. To accomplish the solution, an efficient numerical model and solution procedure developed by La Mendola and Papia for investigating the stability of masonry piers under their own weight and an eccentric top load, is utilised and adapted to the problem at hand. The analysis showed that, although, the aqueduct can withstand out-of-plane earthquake ground motions of medium size and usually encountered periods, it is vulnerable to the ones containing long-period pulses.

Nowadays, in architecture it is inevitable to find a link between nature and construction, engineering and design to preserve the resources of life which can be called sustainability. This link is very essential in today's new architectural designs to sustain environment but it is more interesting and difficult to find the sustainable link for historical buildings which were constructed during economical revolutions. The structures were constructed with peculiar technology, serviceability in its own environment and definite district, as the time passes the possibility to withstand changing environment conditions would become complicated. In this paper, historical residential buildings, constructed in 19th century in Fener – Balat Istanbul, Turkey, an important example of cultural heritage district, will be analysed in terms of three different views.

A recent remark that the latter ‘strove in everything to be worthy of the Mother of God, to Whom the city was dedicated by St Constantine the Great in 330’ follows a deeply embedded pious narrative in which state and church intertwine in the city’s foundation as well as its subse- quent fortunes. Sadly, it perpetuates a flawed reading of the emperor’s place in the political and religious landscape. For a more nuanced and considered view we have only to turn to Vasiliki Limberis’ masterly account of politico-religious civic transformation from the reign of Constantine to that of Justinian. In the concluding passage of Divine Heiress: The Virgin Mary and the Creation of Christianity, Limberis reaffirms that ‘Constantinople had no strong sectarian Christian tradition. Christianity was new to the city, and it was introduced at the behest of the emperor.’ Not only did the civic ceremonies of the imperial cult remain ‘an integral part of life in the city, breaking up the monotony of everyday existence’. Hecate, Athena, Demeter and Persephone, and Isis had also enjoyed strong presences in the city, some of their duties and functions merging into those of two protector deities, Tyche Constantinopolis, tutelary guardian of the city and its fortune, and Rhea, Mother of the Gods. These two continued to be ‘deeply ingrained in the religious cultural fabric of Byzantium..

Most of the facts we know are from various written sources about the two Augusts’ confrontation, and can be used to draw certain conclusions about the sequence of events. The most important of these events are the attack of the Sauromatus barbarians from Palus Maeotis, led by their king Rausimodus, against Constantine’s estate (at an unspecified date shortly before 323 AD) and the Gothic invasion in 323 AD. It is not unlikely that both these invasions were connected with plots hatched by Licinius. At the beginning, the march of Rausimodus, king of the Sauromatus to the Empire’s borders could be related to the fighting within the Roman state.1 It is very likely that this was one of the last attempts by barbarians to arrange a predatory aggression using a Bosporan fleet. Chapter 53 of Constantine Porphyrogenitus’ treatise De Administrando Imperio named Ιστορία περί τοΰ κάστρου Χερσώνος [Story of the city of Cherson] is a very specific source. It includes five different plotlines that tell us about events of ancient Crimean history. However, the information in this source is quite difficult to understand and to interpret. The main complications for the author were that the events in the text are unique and were written in a time distant from Constatine’s epoch.

Constantinople was, for more than a thousand years, capital of the Byzantine Empire, which in its earlier period, from the fourth to the sixth century,was synonomous with the Roman Empire. During those centuries, the religion of the empire changed from pagan to Christian and its language from Latin to Greek, giving rise to the cul- ture that in later times was called Byzantine, from the ancient name of its capital. As the great churchman Gennadius was to say in the mid-fifteenth century,when the empire had come to an end,“Though I am a Hellene by speech yet I would never say that I was a Hellene, for I do not believe as Hellenes believe. I should like to take my name from my faith, and if anyone asks me what I am, I answer, ‘A Christian.’Though my father dwelt in Thessaly, I do not call myself a Thes- salian, but a Byzantine, for I am of Byzantium.”1 The surviving Byzantine monuments of Istanbul include more than a score of churches, most notably Hagia Sophia. Other extant monuments include the great land walls of the city and fragments of its sea walls; the remains of two or three palaces; a fortified port; three commemorative columns and the base of a fourth; two huge subterranean cisterns and several smaller ones; three enormous reservoirs; an aqueduct; a number of fragmentary ruins; and part of the Hippo- drome, the city’s oldest monument and the only one that can surely be assigned to ancient Byzantium.
