Key question for this lesson: Why are people living in Starcross making flood plans?

This is an OS (Ordnance Survey) map of the area around , which is a large town on the edge of the , in , south-west .

These are aerial photos of the village of Starcross, which is a small village just across the river from the town of Exmouth. Can you find Starcross on the map above? What can you see lots of to the west of Starcross?

Look at this image of ships on river near Exmouth in 1851. Why do you think Starcross was chosen as a settlement for people to live? Think back to the time before railways were invented. Why is there still a ferry to get from Starcross to Exmouth (resource 28)?

These images show trains passing through the village of Starcross. The railway is shown as a thick black line on the OS map above.

These images show the raised sea wall that runs along the river past Starcross. Why might this be important to protect the village?

Resource 31: These images show the River Exe reaching high tide – this means when the level of water is higher than at any point in the day. Can you see the houses in the background? Why might it be a problem if the water goes over the gate?

Now look at these images – look at the river! It has reached the level of the railway! What could happen to the houses if the water level rises above the railway?
