Why I support the Capital Campaign The multi-purpose building would not only help our church, but the community also. The youth would be able to do more, and the adults would be able to meet there if something were to happen. This build- ing will also show the community that we’re expanding, and it would urge people to join. St. Thomas has accumulated a lot more kids for the Youth Group. This has impacted the church because of what they do and the support they work for. Eva Z. St. Thomas Youth Recently SVdP was able to help a young family. This family was staying at GSM and called us for help. The family, mom, dad, and 2 young children had lived in Huntsville about a year. When they moved here from Detroit, they hoped for a better life. It started well with a job and hous- ing. Then the father lost his job. They were staying in Good Shepherd Mission. It was winter and the weather was cold. They had talked to their family in Detroit. The family was not able to help them with the airfare, but was anxious to have them back in Detroit, where they could help. They called SVdP to see if there was anyway we could help them get back to family in Detroit. The SVdP team feared it would be expensive to pay for airfare, but after listening to the couple decided to research flights. They were able to find one-way tickets for $83.30 each. The two children were under 2. We needed 3 tickets and the Holy Spirit definitely guided them through the entire journey. Flights were affordable. Next challenge, the weather. GSM provided suitcases and found a couple who could drive them to the airport. They gave the couple money for gas to drive the family to the airport. We gave them money to cover the extra suit- cases because the flight was so cheap. The team provided a listening ear and care and concern for their needs. The family had a phone which was not connected, but they were able to keep in touch by texting using WiFi. This really came in handy as several glitches came up. Mainly, the weather. The weather was worse in Detroit, air- ports were iced and flights were cancelled. GSM provided money for the friend’s gas to take them to the airport. The weather became bad, and to ensure that they got on the plane (after numerous cancellations), we put them up at an airport hotel which turned out to be a great idea by the team. Their original flight was cancelled and they had to be available to catch the next available flight. We were able to provide snacks for the children and parents at the airport. Several members were aware of the situation and cheers and thanksgiving for our answered prayer went up when we were texted that they were on the plane and on their way. The family was extremely grateful for our assistance and called to let us know they were home. Our SVdP team spent about 2 weeks ensuring that they could get home. The spiritual journey we all experienced, knowing that God was present throughout this experience. Working with our friends is an extremely rewarding vocation. SVdP is not limited to financial assistance. We offer prayers, understanding, resources and caring, with God at our side. Meeting our friends where they are enables us to learn more about their situation and poverty. Walker County has 25% plus poverty. We are reaching out to you. We hope to provide news with regard to liturgical topics and events of interest to those in the Archdiocese who have a pastoral role that involves the Sacred Liturgy. The hope is that the priests of the Archdiocese will take a glance at this newsletter and share it with those in their parishes that are interested in the Sacred Liturgy. This Newsletter is now available through Apple in the iBooks Store and always available in pdf format on the Archdiocesan website. It will also be included in the weekly priests’ mailing.     Maria Alexandra Monteiro, MA Independent Scholar/ MSc with thesis medieval and renaissance history, Porto, Portugal I received my BIntRel degree in International Relations at Lusíada University of Porto and a few years later I was accepted at the University of Porto. There, I was able to obtain my MSc with thesis in medieval and renaissance studies (MHMR). My thesis was performed on the biography of Antão Martins de Chaves, bishop of Porto in the late XV century. Under the tutelage of PhD Maria Cristina Almeida e Cunha Alegre, I attended lessons on medieval paleography. My core personal interest is to study biographies from ecclesiastics of note and understand how they influenced the society of their time. Phone Number: +351 225094845 Email: [email protected] Page 2 Pantaleon or Panteleimon – A most noble physician As information about the life of Saint Pantaleon is entangled with tradition, it difficult to distinguish myth from facts. Nevertheless, according to several sources, Pantaleon was born c.AD 275, son of the rich pagan Eustorgius of Nicomedia. His name means “a lion in everything”. Later he would be renamed Pantaleímon (from the Greek) by Saint Hermolaus, meaning “all-compassionate” 1. His mother, Saint Eubula, wished him to be instructed in Christianity, but after her death he was sent by his father to study medicine under the famous physician Euphrosinus, probably in Alexandria2, where students were supposed to follow Hippocratic and Galenic theories. The young man proved to be so proficient at his craft that he came to the attention of the Roman Emperor Galerius (AD 284 – 305)3, who appointed him as royal physician as soon as he finished his studies.

    In another tale, Blaise was being led to the prison in Saint Blaise Sebastea, and on the way came across a poor old woman whose pig had been stolen by a wolf. He was then referred to as the "saint of the wild beast." Get to Know St. Blaise Saint Blaise was the bishop of Sebastea and a doctor. The first known record of the saint's life comes from the medical writings of Aëtius Amidenus, where he is recorded as helping with patients suffering from objects stuck in their throat. Many of the miraculous aspects of St. Blaise's life are written of 400 years after his martyrdom in the "Acts of St. Blaise." Saint Blaise is believed to begin as a healer then, eventually, became a "physician of souls." He then retired to a cave, where he remained in prayer. People often turned to Saint Blaise for healing miracles. As bishop of Sebastea, Blaise instructed his people as much by his example as by his words, and the great virtues and sanctity of the servant of God were attested by many miracles. From all parts, the people came flocking to him for the cure of bodily and spiritual ills.[5] He is said to have healed animals (who came to the saint on their own for his assistance, but would not disturb his prayer) and to have been assisted by animals.

Next Saturday, July 25 at 11:00 AM, we will celebrate a Solemnity Mass in honor of Saint Christopher, our parish patronal saint. We were planning to have a parish picnic afterwards, but due to our present circumstances regarding the response to the coronavirus, we cannot. We will have, however, a Mass and gather for it as we pray for God’s Will to be done throughout our Church, state, country and world. On a Musical Note. Every now and then, over the past approximately eighteen months or so, I will receive the occasional inquiry regarding the apparent perceived change in music that is being played or sung or selected at Saint Christopher’s. I hear from several people that we do not play “traditional” hymns anymore, or the music is sad, lacking energy, not uplifting, or no longer joyful, or et cetera.

    Mission Santa Michael Sánchez received a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Barbara Architecture from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo in 1996. He worked as a landscape architect for | ten years before deciding to go back to school for a master’s Visually degree in landscape architecture. He plans to continue working in private practice as well as teach. La Misíon de la Sénora Bárbara, Vírgen y Martír Explored Mission Santa Barbara | Visually Explored Visual imagery is very powerful to how we learn, remember and communicate. Images remain in our Michael A. Sánchez, 2010 psyche long after words have fallen silent and return as helpful references at a later date. This project is Submitted to the UNIVERSITY OF OREGON, Department of Landscape Architecture, College of Architecture and the Allied Arts not a typical historical analysis of the landscape of Mission Santa Barbara, nor a detailed historic rendering of the beautiful architecture and surrounding landscape. Nor is this merely a literary compilation. This project is a unique perspective between all of the professionals that tell stories of the missions – architects, landscape architects, planners, artists, historians, archeologists, anthropologists, Padres, tourists, etc. – and is woven into a product rich in illustrations and backed by interesting facts and sources. This project illustrates elements of the mission that most people might not see from a typical tourist viewpoint. This visual essay communicates the rich history of this influential place in a way that more fully demonstrates the fascinating elements of this mission’s systems and strives to lead the reader to a greater appreciation of this place that is part building, part garden, part lore.
