St. Barbara Catholic Church www.saintbarbarachurch.org November 24, 2019 - Page 3 REFLECTION ON THE WORD OF GOD OF KINGS AND KINGSHIP Americans have an uncomfortable relationship with kings. The American Revolution was fought for independ- ence from King George, after all. Nonetheless, today every Catholic church around the world celebrates the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Today’s feast invites us to look beyond our national loyalties and rejoice in our primary identity. We are children of God in Jesus, Christ the King. Our readings help us consider what it’s like to belong to God’s kingdom. The book of Samuel captures the deep longing of the Israelites for a king to shepherd them. Saint Paul reminds the Colossians that we belong to the kingdom of Christ, whose power he praises in a beautiful hymn. Finally, Luke’s Gospel calls to mind the kind of king Jesus chooses to be—a suffering servant, a man for others. By sacrificing his life for us, Jesus throws open the gates of Paradise. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The Lord said to David, “You shall shepherd my people Israel” (2 Samuel 5:1-3). Psalm — Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord (Psalm 122). Second Reading — Thanks to the Father who has made you fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light (Colossians 1:12-20). Gospel — Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom (Luke 23:35-43). *+*+*+* SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Monday: Thirty-fourth or Last Week in Ordinary Time; St. Catherine of Alexandria Thursday: Thanksgiving Day Saturday: St. Andrew *+*+*+* THANKSGIVING Gratitude is the inward feeling of kindness received. Mission Santa Michael Sánchez received a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Barbara Architecture from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo in 1996. He worked as a landscape architect for | ten years before deciding to go back to school for a master’s Visually degree in landscape architecture. He plans to continue working in private practice as well as teach. La Misíon de la Sénora Bárbara, Vírgen y Martír Explored Mission Santa Barbara | Visually Explored Visual imagery is very powerful to how we learn, remember and communicate. Images remain in our Michael A. Sánchez, 2010 psyche long after words have fallen silent and return as helpful references at a later date. This project is Submitted to the UNIVERSITY OF OREGON, Department of Landscape Architecture, College of Architecture and the Allied Arts not a typical historical analysis of the landscape of Mission Santa Barbara, nor a detailed historic rendering of the beautiful architecture and surrounding landscape. Nor is this merely a literary compilation. This project is a unique perspective between all of the professionals that tell stories of the missions – architects, landscape architects, planners, artists, historians, archeologists, anthropologists, Padres, tourists, etc. – and is woven into a product rich in illustrations and backed by interesting facts and sources. This project illustrates elements of the mission that most people might not see from a typical tourist viewpoint. This visual essay communicates the rich history of this influential place in a way that more fully demonstrates the fascinating elements of this mission’s systems and strives to lead the reader to a greater appreciation of this place that is part building, part garden, part lore.

Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church 480 Racebrook Road - Orange, Connecticut Celebrating 98 Years of Ministry 1919-2017 Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America 8-10 East 79th Street, New York, New York Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The Thanksgiving holiday is a joyous day of celebrating the blessings of life. Traditions connected to faith, family, and community have developed in this country, affirming the importance of offering thanks to God for these blessings and recognizing the many ways we are blessed by Him. We are blessed through God’s compassion and care for all that He has created. Our Lord asked, Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? (Matthew 6:26). He knows our needs, even those we think are small and insignificant. Because God’s love and provision are always with us, because He created us and sustains us by His grace, we give thanks. We are blessed abundantly by this wondrous power of His grace. It is a power that heals, redeems, protects, and saves. The Apostle Paul proclaimed this power by stating, For by grace you have been saved through faith; and it is not of your own doing, it is the gift of God (Ephesians 2:8). We accept this gift by faith and with thanksgiving. We offer thanks to God in communion with Him through the Holy Eucharist, a communal act filled with grace. Because God loves us and by His grace seeks to restore us to eternal fellowship with Him, we give thanks.

  • The Severed Breast a Topos in the Legends of Female Virgin Martyr Saints1
KIRSTEN WOLF The Severed Breast A Topos in the Legends of Female Virgin Martyr Saints1 The legend of Saint Agatha (ed. Unger 1877:1, 1-14) relates that Quintianus, consular official in Sicily, was inflamed with love for the beautiful, highborn, and Christian young virgin.2 He had her brought before him, but quickly perceived the firmness of her religious con victions: due to her commitment assponsa Christi, she would neither tolerate his advances nor sacrifice to the heathen gods. Accordingly, he turned her over to Aphrodisia and her nine daughters, who kept a bordello, but since they were unable to overcome Saint Agatha’s resistance, Quintianus summoned her before the court, where he himself was the judge. Upon her refusal to comply with his demands, her face was beaten with fists, whereupon she was imprisoned and then stretched on the rack and tortured. But Saint Agatha’s delight in the torments caused Quintianus to inflict on her further torments: he ordered her breasts to be torn off with iron hooks, after which she was starved in prison. However, she was miraculously healed by a vision of one of the apostles. Quintianus then ordered Saint Agatha to be rolled naked over sharp pebbles strewn on the ground and sent back to prison, where she gave up her spirit on 5 February 253. While the physical sufferings of Saint Agatha may seem excessive and exceptionally spectacular, they are by no means unique. Indeed most of the sufferings, if not all, resemble accounts of sadomasochistic tortures by pagan tormentors, full of gore and eloquence, in the lives of other female saints, who repulse the spiritual assaults — the 1 I confine this study primarily to the corpus of Old Norse-Icelandic saints’ lives, al though discussion of the topos of course applies to hagiography in general.

  • California's Legislature
Table of Contents 341 APPENDIX Q State Emblems, Insignia, Song, and Poet Laureate The State Emblems In the enactment of the laws designating a State Flag, Animal, Bird, Tree, Flower, Fish, Rock, Mineral, Colors, Nickname, and Song, etc., California’s Legislature has proved that sentiment may be included in prosaic law. The Bear Flag is emblematic of California’s romantic past; the valley quail and the golden trout represent her abundance of wild game and fish; while the redwood and golden poppy are in recognition of the beauty of her trees and flowers; serpentine and gold suggest the richness and variety of her natural resources. The State Colors of blue and gold depict the azure skies and precious California metal; the song “I Love You, California” portrays the regard Californians hold for their native state. State Animal Until it became extinct in 1922, the California grizzly bear (Ursus californicus) played an important part in the early period of the state. Avidly hunted and at the same time mightily respected by the early rancheros, it became the most arresting symbol on the flag raised in independence at Sonoma in 1846. The Native Sons of the Golden West used the bear as an emblem as early as 1875. Long identified with the University of California, the California grizzly bear was officially designated the State Animal in 1953. 1 State Bird Widely distributed throughout the state, the California valley quail (Lophortyx californica) is a fine game bird especially noted for its hardihood and adaptability. A plump, gray-colored bird, it is somewhat smaller than a pigeon.
