The Emergence of the Mahajanapadas Sanjay Sharma Introduction In the post-Vedic period, the centre of activity shifted from the upper Ganga valley or madhyadesha to middle and lower Ganga valleys known in the contemporary Buddhist texts as majjhimadesha. Painted grey ware pottery gave way to a richer and shinier northern black polished ware which signified new trends in commercial activities and rising levels of prosperity. Imprtant features of the period between c. 600 and 321 BC include, inter-alia, rise of ‘heterodox belief systems’ resulting in an intellectual revolution, expansion of trade and commerce leading to the emergence of urban life mainly in the region of Ganga valley and evolution of vast territorial states called the mahajanapadas from the smaller ones of the later Vedic period which, as we have seen, were known as the janapadas. Increased surplus production resulted in the expansion of trading activities on one hand and an increase in the amount of taxes for the ruler on the other. The latter helped in the evolution of large territorial states and increased commercial activity facilitated the growth of cities and towns along with the evolution of money economy. The ruling and the priestly elites cornered most of the agricultural surplus produced by the vaishyas and the shudras (as labourers). The varna system became more consolidated and perpetual. It was in this background that the two great belief systems, Jainism and Buddhism, emerged. They posed serious challenge to the Brahmanical socio-religious philosophy. These belief systems had a primary aim to liberate the lower classes from the fetters of orthodox Brahmanism. -

The time span of the period is uncertain. Philological and linguistic evidence indicates that the Rigveda, the oldest of the Vedas, was com- posed roughly between 1700 and 1100 BCE, also referred to as the early Vedic period. The end of the period is commonly estimated to have occurred about 500 BCE, and 150 BCE has been suggested as a terminus ante quem for all Vedic Sanskrit literature. Transmission of texts in the Vedic period was by oral tradition alone, and a literary tradition set in only in post-Vedic times. Despite the difficulties in dating the period, the Vedas can safely be assumed to be several thousands of years old. The associated culture, sometimes referred to as Vedic civilization, was probably centred early on in the northern and northwestern parts of the Indian subcontinent, but has now spread and constitutes the basis of contemporary Indian culture. The regions of eastern Uttar Pradesh covering parts or whole of the districts of Mirzapur, Sonbhadra, Sant Ravidas nagar, Varanasi, Allahabad, Kaushambi, Balia, Gonda, Bahraich, Shravasti, Balrampur, Faizabad, Ambedkar Nagar, Sultanpur, Ghazipur, Jaunpur, Pratapgarh, Basti, Siddharth Nagar, Deoria, Kushinagar, Gorakhpur, Maharajganj, Chandauli, Mau and Azamgarh. The entire region may be divided into three distinct geographical units – The Ganga Plain, the Vindhya-Kaimur ranges and the Saryupar region. Hometowns of the Marwaris, Diasporic Traders in India Sumie Nakatani Introduction The Marwaris are renowned all over India for having emerged in the nineteenth century as the most prominent group of traders. Under colonial rule they played the role of intermediary traders for the British and facilitated Britain’s commercial expansions. In the early twentieth century they invested in modern industries and some of them became industrial giants. It is estimated that more than half the assets in the modern industrial sector of the Indian economy are controlled by a group of trading castes originating in the northern half of Rajasthan, popularly called the Marwaris [Timberg 1978:15]. As of 1986, the Birlas, the Singhanias, the Modis, and the Bangurs (all Marwari business houses) accounted for one third of the total assets of the top ten business houses in India [Dubashi 1996 cited in Hardgrove 2004:3]. Several studies on the Marwaris have been made. A well-known study by Thomas Timberg focused on the strength of the Marwaris in Indian industry and explored the reason for their disproportionate success. Studying the history of Marwari migrations and the types of economic activities in which they engaged, he discussed what advantages the Marwaris had over other commercial communities in modern industrialization. He suggested that the joint family system, a credit network across the country, and willingness to speculate were important characteristics. The possession of these advantages emerges from their traditional caste vocation in trade. The Marwaris are habituated to credit and risk, and develop institutions and attitudes for coping with them [Timberg 1978:40]. -
Shekhawati-A Hornless Dairy Bdreed of Goat from Indian Desert
SHEKHAWATI-A HORNLESS DAIRY BDREED OF GOAT FROM INDIAN DESERT J.P. Mittal Central Arid Zone Research Institute, Jodhpur -342 003, India. SUMMARY Recently Identified, Sekhawati breed of goat, is localized in a specified pocket of the Shekhawati region of north west India, It is called as Modi -Bakkri, which means goat without horns, in area of its inhabitation. This breed is solid coloured with predominent black colour. • The body is covered with small hair of fine texture. Both male and females are polled. Female goats have typical wedge shape of a dairy animal alongwith long neck. The average values for body weight, height at withers pin-shoulder length and heart girth, of adult males were 35.78+1.04 kg, 73.05+2.32, 76.82+1.92 and 74.37+2.03 cm and adult females were 23.78 + 1.24 kg, 68.92 + 2.24, 70.78+1.98 and 71.16+2.15 cm respectively. The milk yield was 138.15+8.25 in lactation period of 150.00+3.12 days. This goat may hopefully prove to be a good dairy breed if developed on scientific lines, through improved management, nutritrional betterment and selective breeding. INTRODUCTION Under prevailing cicumstances of Indian desert the goat is most economical animal among all species of livestock. Dual type Harwari was the only recognised breed of goat in this region so far. Scientists of this Institute have discovered and identified a new dairy breed of goat from this region during last 5 years (M it t a l 1986, and 1987 a ). -
Women in Xenophon's Anabasis
For there were many hetairai in the army: Women in Xenophon's ~4.nabasis 1 The mercenaries of Cyrus, the CyreaiLS, whose story Xenophon recounts in his Anabasis, are familiar figures to students of ancient warfare. 2 The women who accompanied the Cyreans for much of their march, in contrast, have so far received scant attention from historians more often interested in the details of tactics and leadership. 3 Nor is such neglect solely the fault of old~ fashioned military types, for even those who focus on the political and social aspects of the Anabasis army largely ignore its women4 What is more, although women make repeated appearances in Xenophon's narrative, scholars of women's roles and status in the ancient Greek have scarcely noticed their presence 5 This last omission appears all the more strildng, given the amount of scrutiny accorded recently to the category of the hetaira, and given that Xenophon several times describes women amongst the Cyreans as hetairai. 6 The histories of women and of warfare, it would seem, are not supposed to mix. Such an artificial boundary clearly invites brealdng, and the Anabasis provides invaluable material for the task. This essay examines Xenophon' s testimony on the origins and number of women amongst the Cyreans and the extent of their participation in the social life of the army. His narrative, as we shall see, indicates that at least some of the women who joined the Cyreans in the retreat from Cunaxa to the sea and thence to Byzantium became integral members of the soldiers' community. -

9. Ravana Falls Man toils and moils for feeding his belly. He sweats and struggles for education but fails to be happy. Why should humans be steeped in sorrow like this? Would not the Lord help if only you pray sincerely? Embodiments of Love! Truth, righteousness, peace, and love constitute the foundation of the scriptures, the essence of all re- ligions, the destination of all paths, and the essence of all essences. Man indulges in finding fault with others, oblivious to his own flaws. The cause for this can be traced to his materialistic tendencies. Man is made of Atma (Self) and anatma (non-self), shariram (body) and shariri (embodied one), kshetra (field) and kshetra- jna (knower of the field), and sthira (permanent) and asthira (ephemeral). You cannot find anything else in this Universe except these dualities. The entire world is a play of the pravritti and the nivritti, the outward and inward. Body (kshetra) and matter belong to the realm of pravritti whereas Atma, consciousness, the embodied one, belongs to the realm of nivritti. Even the Avatars are subject to pravritti, since they have to assume a human body. Rama was no exception to it. Though He was the Om- nipotent and the Omniscient One, since He had as- 102 Summer Showers in Brindavan 1996 sumed the human body, He had to behave as if He too was under the spell of illusion. Ravana beheaded Rama prepared himself to battle with Ravana. Ravana had lost everybody, including his son Indrajit, his brother Kumbhakarna, and a host of others. Now, Ravana alone was left as a relic of Lanka. -

We therefore need to define the meaning of the term ‘ancient society’ to begin with and then move on to define a loose chronology in the context of the sources and their readings. It would also be useful to have an understanding about the various readings of the sources, a kind of a historiography of the interpretative regime. In order to facilitate a better understanding this unit is divided into five sections. In the introduction we have discussed the range of interpretations that are deployed on the sources and often the sources also become interpretative in nature. The complexity of the sources has also been dealt with in the same context. The new section then discusses the ancient society and what it means. This discussion is spread across the regions and the varying sources that range from archaeology to oral traditions. Department of History and Archaeology, North Eastern Hill University, Tura Campus, Meghalaya – 794002, India (Email: [email protected]) Received: 31July 2017; Revised: 29September 2017; Accepted: 09November 2017 Heritage: Journal of Multidisciplinary Studies in Archaeology 5 (2017): 169‐190 Abstract: The paper aims to analyze the archaeological evidence to understand the social and economic formation during the Early Historic period in Maharashtra. The analysis and discussion offered in the paper are based mainly on archaeological evidences unearthed in excavations. However, historical information were also taken into consideration for verification and understanding of archaeological evidence. Keywords: Early History, Megalithic, Pre‐Mauryan, Satavahana, Society, Economy, Maharashtra Introduction History and archaeology need to grow together, instead of parallel, by sharing and utilizing sources as the primary aim of both is to write history. According to Thapar (1984: 193‐194) “The study of social history, economic history and the role of technology in Indian history, being comparatively new to the concern of both archaeologist and historians, require appropriate emphasis. Furthermore, in these fields, the evidence from archaeology can be used more directly. The historian has data on these aspects from literary sources but the data tends to be impressionistic and confined by the context. Archaeology can provide the historian with more precise data on the fundamentals of these aspects of history, resulting thereby in a better comprehension of the early forms of socio‐economic institutions”. The social and economic conditions of Maharashtra during the early historic period have been reconstructed mostly based on available sources like inscriptions, coins and travelers’ accounts.
