Hindu Castes and Sects an Exposition of the Origin of the Hindu Caste HINDU CASTES AND SECTS. PREF A.CE. IN the last edition of my" Commentaries on Hindu Law" I devoted a chapter to the Hindn Caste System which attracted the attention of the Publishers, and they suggested that the subject might well be expanded so as to be brought out as a separate volume. They suggested also that, in order to make the book complete, I should give an account not only of the Castes, but also of the important Hindu Sects, some of which are practically so many ""new Castes. As I had heen already engaged in writing a book about the hisfury and philosophy of religions, the prp­ posal, so far as the sects were concerned, was welcome indeed. About the Castes I felt very considerable diffidence; but it seemed to me that, in a town like Calcutta, where there are men from every part of India, it might not be quite impossible to collect the necessary information. When, however, I actually commenced my enquiries, then I fully realised the difficulty of my task. The original information contained in this work has been derived from a very large number of Hindn gentlemen hailing from different parts of India. I here iv PRBFACK. gratefully acknowledge the kindness that they have shown in according to me their assistance. I feel very ;trongly inclined to insert in this book a list of their names. But the publication of snch a list is not de­ sirable for more reasons than one. To begin with, such a list would be necessarily too long to be conveniently included. Then, again, the subject of castes and sects is, in some of its aspects, a very irritating one, and if I were to give publicity to the names of the persons who have assisted me, it might place them in a very false position. So I thank them generally withont mentioning any names. In connection also with this part of the work, I mnst acknowledge my obligations to the works of Risley, Wilson and Sherring, and to Mr. Narsima­ yangar's Report of the last Censns of Mysore. As to the last of these, which is compiled by an edncated native of the conntry, it is hardly necessary to observe that it is very reliable, though not very complete. Mr. Risley's "Tribes and Castes of Bengal" is an exhaustive treatise, and is, generally speaking, reliable also. If there had been similar works for the other provinces, then the task of taking a bird's-eye view of the whole would not have heen quite so arduous to m.. as it has actually been. With regard to the part of the book devoted to the Hindu Sects, I may mention that the greater portion of it had been written originally for my promised work on the philosophy of religion which I hope to bring out before tong. I have tried my best tbrougbout to avoid i~reverence and offensive expressions, and the reader, who is not altogetber blinded by orthodoxy, will, I bope, admit tbat, even with regard to tbe worst of the abomination-worshipping sects, I bave nowhere been barsber tban tbe nature of tbe case absolutely required. Reverence ougbt to be by all means sbowu to persons and institutions tbat bave a just claim to it. But nothing enn, in my opinion, b. more sinful than to speak respectfully of persons wbo are enemies of man­ kind, and to wbitewash rotteu institutions by esoterio explanations and fine pbrases. It is no doubt extremely difficult to get rid of the effect of early training and a",ociations. But tbose wbo claim to be educated and enlightened will, I trust, give vi PRBFACL me an impartial and patient hearing. However strong their faith in Saivism, Saktaism and Radha worship may be, they cannot be altogether blind to the real character of tbese creeds. One of the greatest thinker. 'of modern times bas, in connection with certain ques­ tions of political economy, said :- It often happens that the univenal belief of one age of mankind-a belief from which no one '!Cal, nor, without any extraordinary effort of genius and courage, could, at that time be free-becomes to a subsequent age so palpable an absurdity, that the only difficulty tllen is to imagine how such & thing can ever have appeared credible. This, I am sure, will before long be the feeling of every honest Hindu witb regard to some of the most important features of his so-called religions, and I shall feel I 'have performed an almost sacred duty if this work promotes in some degree that end. [Bead March 15, 1845.] IT is a matter of no small difficulty to give a general view of the Reli- gion of India, and so to arrange the different Deities composing the Hindu Pantheon, as to place before the student of Hindu Mythology a connected and harmonious system of the religious belief of the natives of Hindustan. Brahma for example is styled the Creator of the Universe, and yet almost totally disregarded, not even a single temple being erected to his honour, although creation is one of the chief grounds of religious worship. Vishnu in the system stands forth as the Preserver, but in the eye of his votaries consisting of myriads in every part of the country, the world owes its origin, as well as its preservation to him; and Siva, though systematic writers tell us he is to be regarded as the author of Destruction, and the third God of the Hindu Triad, is worshipped by millions as the Supreme God, the Pre- server as well as the Destroyer, the Imparter equally with the Taker away of life.

    CJI--IAPTER - V[ DECLINE IN THE POPULARITY OF SUN WORSHIP CHAPTER- VI DECLINE IN THE POPULARITY OF SUN WORSHIP The popularity of the Sun worship in Bengal down to the end of Hindu rule is indicated by the opening verse in the copperplates of Visvarupasena and Suryasena in praise of the Sun god. The extant remains of the icons of Surya, dated or undated, also suggest the continuity of Sun worship until at least the early mediaeval period. Perhaps. this popularity was partly the cause as well as effect of the deep-rooted belief recorded on the pedestal of a Surya image from BairhaHa (Dinajpur District) that the god was the healer of all diseases ('samasta-roganiim harllii l However, since the early part of the 13'h century A.D. things began to change in the disfavour of the Sun-cult. In actuality. the process started long back, specifically since the Sena Period. The northern style SGrya and his worship probably did not last long alter the Varman-Sena period: at least we hardly come across any such images aflerwards. There could be various reasons t(1r the subsequent decline in the importance and anthropomorphic worship of the Sun in early Bengal. However. it is also to be kept in mind that the solar worship in the t(ml1S stated alxl\e did not only disappear from this part of eastern India, but also from the rest of the Indian sub-continent. Naturally. the question rises as to what led to the decline of the solar-cult. No mysticism, symbolism or high philosophy around SOrya: The daily visibility of the Sun to naked eye prevented the sectarians to develop any mysticism, symbolism or high philosophy centering round him.

    Hometowns of the Marwaris, Diasporic Traders in India Sumie Nakatani Introduction The Marwaris are renowned all over India for having emerged in the nineteenth century as the most prominent group of traders. Under colonial rule they played the role of intermediary traders for the British and facilitated Britain’s commercial expansions. In the early twentieth century they invested in modern industries and some of them became industrial giants. It is estimated that more than half the assets in the modern industrial sector of the Indian economy are controlled by a group of trading castes originating in the northern half of Rajasthan, popularly called the Marwaris [Timberg 1978:15]. As of 1986, the Birlas, the Singhanias, the Modis, and the Bangurs (all Marwari business houses) accounted for one third of the total assets of the top ten business houses in India [Dubashi 1996 cited in Hardgrove 2004:3]. Several studies on the Marwaris have been made. A well-known study by Thomas Timberg focused on the strength of the Marwaris in Indian industry and explored the reason for their disproportionate success. Studying the history of Marwari migrations and the types of economic activities in which they engaged, he discussed what advantages the Marwaris had over other commercial communities in modern industrialization. He suggested that the joint family system, a credit network across the country, and willingness to speculate were important characteristics. The possession of these advantages emerges from their traditional caste vocation in trade. The Marwaris are habituated to credit and risk, and develop institutions and attitudes for coping with them [Timberg 1978:40].

Patuas or Chitrakars have been practicing patachitra or patashilpa for centuries. Patachitra or ​ ​ ​ ​ patashilpa is a form of scroll painting. Their diverse repertoire includes tales from Hindu mythology, tribal folklore, as well as Islamic tradition. They paint their stories on long scrolls and sing, as the scroll is unrolled frame by frame. The community of Patuas is spread over many districts of pre-partitioned Bengal: Mursidabad, Bankura, South Twenty-four-Parganas etc (including present-day Bangladesh). Today there are only a few practicing Patuas. Most of them live in the Indian districts of Medinipur and Birbhum (West Bengal). Even in Medinipur, the Patuas are giving up their art and taking to carpentry and farming. The market for pats has ​ ​ shrunk and the income has declined.

Monitoring of groundwater level and chemical quality furnish valuable information on the ground water regime characteristics of the different hydrogeological units moreover, analysis of these valuable data collected from existing observation wells during May, August, November and January in each ground water year (June to May) indicate the pattern of ground water movement, changes in recharge-discharge relationship, behavior of water level and qualitative & quantitative changes of ground water regime in time and space. It also helps in identifying and delineating areas prone to decline of water table and piezometric surface due to large scale withdrawal of ground water for industrial, agricultural and urban water supply requirement. Further water logging prone areas can also be identified with historical water level data analysis. This year book contains the data and analysis of ground water regime monitoring for the year 2018-19.

    SHEKHAWATI-A HORNLESS DAIRY BDREED OF GOAT FROM INDIAN DESERT J.P. Mittal Central Arid Zone Research Institute, Jodhpur -342 003, India. SUMMARY Recently Identified, Sekhawati breed of goat, is localized in a specified pocket of the Shekhawati region of north west India, It is called as Modi -Bakkri, which means goat without horns, in area of its inhabitation. This breed is solid coloured with predominent black colour. • The body is covered with small hair of fine texture. Both male and females are polled. Female goats have typical wedge shape of a dairy animal alongwith long neck. The average values for body weight, height at withers pin-shoulder length and heart girth, of adult males were 35.78+1.04 kg, 73.05+2.32, 76.82+1.92 and 74.37+2.03 cm and adult females were 23.78 + 1.24 kg, 68.92 + 2.24, 70.78+1.98 and 71.16+2.15 cm respectively. The milk yield was 138.15+8.25 in lactation period of 150.00+3.12 days. This goat may hopefully prove to be a good dairy breed if developed on scientific lines, through improved management, nutritrional betterment and selective breeding. INTRODUCTION Under prevailing cicumstances of Indian desert the goat is most economical animal among all species of livestock. Dual type Harwari was the only recognised breed of goat in this region so far. Scientists of this Institute have discovered and identified a new dairy breed of goat from this region during last 5 years (M it t a l 1986, and 1987 a ).
