Original specimens and type localities of early described polychaete species (Annelida) from Norway, with particular attention to species described by O.F. Müller and M. Sars. Memoirs of Museum Victoria 71: 217–236. Early descriptions of species from Norwegian waters are reviewed, with a focus on the basic requirements for re- assessing their characteristics, in particular, by clarifying the status of the original material and locating sampling sites. A large number of polychaete species from the North Atlantic were described in the early period of zoological studies in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Her inngår bl.a. genetikk, fysiologi, fiskevelferd og fiskehelse. Forskningen utføres i 19 faggrupper.

Takket være massevirkningsloven lever hans navn videre i kjemibøker over hele verden.

ICES Marine Science Symposia, 215: 39^4. 2002 Internationalist and Norwegian at the same time: Johan Hjort and ICES Vera Schwach Schwach, V 2002. Internationalist and Norwegian at the same time: Johan Hjort and ICES. - ICES Marine Science Symposia, 215: 39-44. The marine biologist Johan Hjort (1869-1948) remained at the forefront of Norwegian marine research for more than half a century. He also belonged to a small group of Scandinavians who, around 1900, committed themselves to founding ICES. For a small nation, international collaboration was considered crucial for maintaining the quality of research. The marine sciences were also a source of national pride, an area in which Norway could and did shine internationally. For almost fifty years, Hjort was one of the Council’s leading characters both as a scientist and as an organizer. In the formative years of ICES, Hjort established a programme for fishery studies integrating national and international investigations. While the British and German scientists were preoccupied with the problem of overfishing, Hjort was the foremost spokesman for focusing on nat ural variations in the catches. In 1914, he and his colleagues at the Directorate of Fisheries concluded their research by publishing "Fluctuations in the great fisheries of northern Europe". This report laid out theoretical foundations of the emerging field and improved the Council’s scientific reputation. His experiences within the ICES communi ty also influenced Hjort's political ideas and work. Like his compatriot, the biologist and oceanographer Fridtjof Nansen, Hjort held that building scientific and cultural bonds and establishing agreements in these areas between nations were essential for avoiding the hubris amongst nations and lessening the chance of war in Europe.

Océanis • vol. 33 no 3/4 • 2007 History of Norwegian Marine Science Stig SKRESLET Department of Fisheries and Natural Sciences Bodø University College NO-8049 Bodø, Norway [email protected] Keywords: founding theologists, interdisciplinary pioneers, eras, turning points, scientific organizations, bureaucratic role Abstract Exact marine science in Norway was initiated in 1760 by pioneers in zo- ological taxonomy. Fisheries ecology that started in 1863, lead to large oceanic and Arctic expeditions, and a “golden age” of interdisciplinary Norwegian marine science ending with the 1st World War. Governmen- tal poverty between the two World Wars made scientists work on low- budget research in coastal areas or join Arctic and Antarctic expeditions funded by private capital. After the 2nd World War a New Deal appeared when the Government invited the marine science community to organ- ise interdisciplinary research coordination. It ended in 1986 when a new political regime won control over science and established an administra- tive level of research leadership that managed short-term programs in response to political agendas for economical development during the rest of the 20th century. Revised 2009 by Erling Bakken and Ingunn E. Bakketeig. 2 The Institute of Marine Research today The work of the Institute of Marine Research The Institute's vision is "Knowledge and advice for rich and clean oceans and coastal areas". This means we will carry out scientific research to provide authorities, industry and the society in general with a broad and reliable basis for the management of our marine ecosystems. The aim of the management is to protect the marine environment and secure a high, but sustainable, yield of the fish stocks, other living marine resources and the aquaculture. The character of the ecosystems and the environmental conditions require that such management must be based on extensive international cooperation, both among scientists and authorities. An important part of the research is directed towards fish stocks and other living resources which form the basis for the Norwegian fisheries. Monitoring stock fluctuations and continuously improve the knowledge will provide more reliable assessments of the marine production and hence better management. The environmental research is also extensive, both by monitoring climatic changes and chemical pollution, and by investigating how such factors may influence the conditions for the living resources. The Institute of Marine Research (IMR) contributes to the development of the marine aquaculture industry by providing new, basic biological knowledge related to salmonids, marine species, mussels and shellfish.

The monophyletic status of the family is controversial because of lack of sound synapomorphies. In this paper we present a review of the diversity of Diaphanidae in Europe and give new data on the morphology and anatomy of 50% of the species together with a synopsis of the relevant systematic characters to distinguish between all European species and genera. The rare species Colobocephalus costellatus is redescribed and shown alive for the first time. Further evidence supporting the non-monophyly of Diaphanidae is given; no synapomorphies were found to unite tra- ditional Diaphanidae taxa,

c 2011 by Cathrine Blom. All rights reserved. KJERULF AND WELHAVEN: THE ADVENT OF ROMANTIC LIEDER AND POETRY IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY NORWAY BY CATHRINE BLOM DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Musicology in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2011 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor William Kinderman, Chair and Director of Research Professor Christina Bashford Professor Gayle Sherwood Magee Professor Rochelle Wright Abstract This thesis traces the development of the romantic Lied and poetry in Norway in the first half of the nineteenth century, a development driven by by two closely intertwined figures, the composer Halfdan Kjerulf (1815-1868) and the poet Johan Sebastian Cammermeyer Welhaven (1807-1873). Welhaven was Norway’s first Romantic poet in the Heidelberg tra- dition, a trend which took its inspiration from folklore, folk music, and medieval myths. His probing nationalistic depiction of nature, interwoven with supernatural folkloristic elements, and his elegiac-erotic and lyrical poetry inspired Kjerulf to create the Norwegian romance, Den norske romanse, modeling it initially on the German Lied. During the years from 1840 to 1868, Kjerulf set 43 Welhaven poems to music – 24 for solo voice and piano – and with his more than 130 songs established the Norwegian art-song that Edvard Grieg would build on during the decades following Kjerulf’s death. After presenting the cultural and political background in Norway, the intertwined lives of the poet and composer and their European cultural heritage, this thesis turns to a detailed analysis of the complete Welhaven romances for one voice, and demonstrates how Kjerulf and Welhaven, initially oriented towards Denmark and Europe, the Danish language and the German Lied, developed a growing appreciation for national traits and language.

tui U N IVE RSITETET I BERGEN 26 15. FEBRUAR 1967 NOTES ON THE GENUS PANDALINA IN NORWEGIAN WATERS (CRUSTACEA DECAPODA) By LITA GREVE Museum of Zoology, University of Bergen ABSTRACT The paper is a revision of the Norwegian Pandalina. Two species, P. brevirostris and P. pro- funda, have been found in Norwegian waters. New records are given together with notes on the geographical distribution. P. brevirostris is a shallow-water species not found below 180 m. P. profunda prefers deeper waters and is not found above 54 m. The systematic characters which separate the two species are discussed. INTRODUCTION Prior to 1946 Pandalina brevirostris (RATHKE, 1843) was the only species of Pandalina known from Scandinavian waters. HOLTHUIS in 1946 described a new Pandalina species, P. profunda, which is closely related to P. brevirostris. P. profunda was recorded by HOLTHUIS from four widely scattered localities viz. Barents Sea, 74°16' N, 29°47' E; east of the Shetlands, 61°52' N, 1°42' E; Bergen, Norway, and off the Portuguese coast, 41°13/ N, 11°39.6' E. In order to determine the distribution of P. profunda along the Norwegian coast and the upper limit of the depth range of this species, the material in Nor- wegian museums has been examined and supplemented with new material col- lected in the vicinity of the Biological Station of the University of Bergen. Unfor- tunately some of the older museum specimens are so damaged that they can only be determined to genus. These specimens, which include records mentioned in older works on Norwegian Pandalina (APPELLOF, 1906; DONS, 1915; GRIEG, 1927), are not listed below.

366 Obituary Notices. OBITUARY NOTICES. Georg Ossian Sars. THE great advances which have been made since the beginning of the present century in the application of experimental methods to biology have, to some extent, diverted attention from the descriptive branches of the science, anatomical and systematic, which provide the basis for all our knowledge of living things. The recent death of Professor G. 0. Sars, the distinguished son of a distinguished father, may recall to us how much our zoology owes to the labours of the great descriptive naturalists of the nineteenth century. In 1837 Michael Sars, the pastor of Floro, near Bergen, was suspected by some of his parishioners of meddling with the black art because of his fondness for poring over strange sea beasts. He had indeed already made a name for himself by his discoveries in marine zoology, and in that year the Norwegian Storthing voted a sum of money in order that he might study in France and Germany. He was on the point of setting out for his journey when his second son was born, on the 20th April. Georg Ossian Sars gave little promise in his early years of future distinction. Dr Nordgaard, in his charming little biography of father and scm (Michael og Ossian Sars, Kristiania, 1918), gives us a picture of a shy, solitary schoolboy, laughed at by his fellows for his outlandish name, marked as of no more than average ability by his schoolmaster, and fond of wandering alone on the mountains and filling his pockets with all kinds of plants and animals.
