Series I Plans (10 flat file drawers) Series I: Plans contain 1760 plans dating from c.1891-c.1958. The majority of the plans are for vessels designed by George Owen. Most of his design legacy is intact in this series. Owen primarily designed sailing yachts and, therefore, yacht plans comprise the bulk of the collection. There are also plans for power yachts and commercial vessels present in the collection. Throughout his career, Owen designed new rigs for his own designs and for vessels by other naval architects. These rigging plans are also in the collection. The majority of plans in the collection come from Owen’s private practice, though there are plans from the years of Owen’s association with Francis Minot and other naval architects and shipyards. Also included in this series are plans drawn specifically for small half-hull models with wooden sails that Owen commissioned from E. H. Peterson and Owen’s first year drawings as a mechanical engineering student at MIT. Occasional gaps in the design numbering sequence (particularly in the Owen and Minot years) suggest that some plans associated with Owen are elsewhere or have not survived. Additionally, it is important to note that there are few tables of offsets. Owen occasionally wrote references to “offset books” on the plans. These offset books are not present in the collection, and may have been discarded after his death. Lines plans are available for most designs, however. Judging by the handwriting on the plans, Owen had several assistant draftsmen over the years, the most prolific of whom worked from c.1910-c.1914. This draftsman became particularly adept at mimicking Owen’s handwriting. Neither Owen nor any of his draftsmen indicated initials or names on the plans. The plans are mostly drawn on vellum and tracing cloth. In general, they are in good condition. Note on Physical Plan Order The plans are arranged by Owen’s original design numbers, if known, and then arranged within each design by object numbers (plan numbers), assigned by the project archivist. This provides a roughly chronological order. Each plan has a unique object number, such as GO.1.59. “GO” indicates that it is part of the George Owen Collection, “1” indicates that it is part of series 1 (plans), and the subpoint, in this case “59,” indicates a specific plan. An additional subpoint, such as GO.1.59.1, indicates that the plan is a copy of, or attachment to, another plan. The organization is presumed to be similar to Owen’s original order. Some reordering of the collection was imposed, however. If a plan applies to more than one design, it is filed under the lowest (earliest) design number. Unnumbered designs are arranged Series I: Plan List 2 chronologically or by type of vessel when date is unknown. Plans by other naval architects are filed at the end of the series, unless they are directly associated with an Owen plan. Series I: Plans is arranged into six subseries: . Numbered designs . Unnumbered, dated designs . Unnumbered, undated designs . Plates of first-year mechanical engineering . Sketches for E. H. Peterson half-hull models . Plans by other naval architects Microfilm All of the plans were microfilmed in the order described above. The following is a list of microfilm reels containing Series I. An appointment must be made to view film. Print costs and publication fees are also located in this section. All requests for plans must be in writing to: Curator Hart Nautical Collections MIT Museum 265 Massachusetts Ave. Cambridge, MA 02139 617-258-9107 (fax) [email protected] Please include the following information with your request: 1. Your name and mailing address. 2. Vessel name and/or design number. 3. Plan type and object number from list below. 4. Purpose of interest. Series I: Plan List 3 List of the Plans The following list of plans in the George Owen Collection was created as a report from the larger primary database (see Appendix A in Introduction and Owen Design List PDF) of this collection. Nine fields were selected and reported here to provide an overview of the vessels represented in the Owen Collection and the related plans. The listed plan order is similar to the physical arrangement of the plans as described above. The plans with no design numbers that fall at the end of the list are ordered by object number (in the order they were processed). For a listing of vessel names designed by Owen, see Appendix A (Introduction and Owen Design List PDF). Searching In addition to browsing the list of plans, you will likely wish to use the “search” or “find” functions available in PDF readers. This function is usually under Edit on the tool bar at the top. Explanation of Fields Object # = Object number of the plan, created by the project archivist. Each plan has a unique object number. Plans that are subpointed, such as GO.1.59.1, are copies of or attachments to another plan. Plan Type = Chosen by the project archivist from the following list of categories: accmdtn dtl = accommodation detail list = list bt hndling dtl = boat handling detail mchnry arrgt = machinery arrangement const = construction mchnry dtl = machinery detail deck strctr = deck structure non-boat = non-boat dsgn curve = design curve offsets = offsets docking = docking plan plmbng dtl = plumbing detail elctrcl dtl = electrical detail profile = outboard profile eng arrgt = engine arrangement prpllr dtl = propeller detail engine dtl = engine detail rig dtl = rig detail gnl arrgt = general arrangement sail = sail plan/outboard profile hrdwr dtl = hardware detail sail ctg = sail cutting plan/gore plan hull dtl = hull detail section = section inbrd profile = inboard profile shaft dtl = propeller shaft detail keel dtl = keel detail spar = spar plan lines = lines strng dtl = steering detail (e.g. rudder) Orig. Yr. = Year when the plan was originally drawn. If the year is unknown, this field is left blank. Revision dates are noted in a separate field in the database, not reproduced here. Series I: Plan List 4 Vessel Name = Original name of the vessel, with later names in parentheses. Names of vessels are always in caps. Des. # = Owen’s design number, usually written on the plan. An asterisk indicates that the design number was not written on the plan but could be determined accurately by comparison with other plans. No design # indicates that the design is not Owen’s, that Owen did not assign a design # (model plans, student work, rig contracts, etc.), or that the plan was not produced by Owen. Vessel Type = Type name given by creator of plan combined with bracketed type name assigned by project archivist. Question mark added when type is not certain. O. A. = Length overall. B. = Beam. D. = Draft. Series I: Plan List 5 George Owen Collection - MIT Museum Object # Plan Type Orig. Yr. Vessel Name Design # Vessel Type O.A. B. D.
