Palos Verdes Street damage sustained when the boat ran aground in Ventura County. After 5:00 p.m.: 310/732-3500 The Irving Johnson and the Exy Johnson are twin Brigantine tallships built at the Port of Los Angeles and the heart of the Los Angeles Maritime Institute’s TopSail Youth Sail Training program. The TopSail program has been successfully teaching at-risk youth in Los Angeles the joys of sailing while instilling the values of teamwork, cooperation and confidence. Garnering national press coverage in March 2005 with the heartbreaking image of the beautiful tallship aground just offshore in Ventura County, the Irving Johnson sustained substantial damage in the incident. The boat spent four days aground before being freed and towed back to Los Angeles. Repairs to the Irving Johnson were done by Gambol Industries in Long Beach, who did an impressive job of bringing the boat back to its original – if not better! - glory. The re-commissioning ceremony is a public celebration, and all are invited to attend. -

COASTAL CONSERVANCY Staff Recommendation October 5, 2006 LOS ANGELES MARITIME INSTITUTE TOPSAIL YOUTH PROGRAM SWIFT OF IPSWICH RESTORATION File No. 06-079 Project Manager: Neal Fishman/Carol Arnold RECOMMENDED ACTION: Authorization to disburse up to $200,000 to the Los Angeles Maritime Institute to repair the tall ship Swift of Ipswich for use as a waterfront attraction and a sailing classroom LOCATION: The Swift of Ipswich is docked at Berth 84, foot of 6th St., Los Angeles Harbor, San Pedro (Exhibit 1: project Location and Map). The Latin barca may stem from Celtic "barc" (per Thurneysen) or Greek "baris" (per Diez), a term for an Egyptian boat. The Oxford English Dictionary considers the latter improbable.[1] The word barc appears to have come from Celtic languages. The form adopted by English, perhaps from Irish, was bark, while that adopted by Latin as barca very early, which gave rise to the French barge and barque. In Latin, Spanish and Italian the term barca refers to a small boat, not a full-size ship. French influence in England led to the use in English of both words, although their meanings now are not the same. Well before the 19th century a barge had become interpreted as a small vessel of coastal or inland waters. Somewhat later, a bark became a sailing vessel of a distinctive rig as detailed below. In Britain, by the mid-19th century, the spelling had taken on the French form of barque. -

With historical knowledge, vessel stats and fun facts, you will be able to recognize the tall ships, identify their key features and tout a little trivia! Fifteen international tall ships are scheduled to participate in the TallShips®LA, maritime event. Visiting ships include the Argus, Bill of Rights, Californian, Mexico’s Cuauhtémoc, Exy Johnson, Antigua’s Kaisei, Lynx, R. Tucker Thompson of New Zealand, Pilgrim, Robert C. Seamans, Royaliste, Spirit of Dana Point, Swift of Ipswich, Talofa and Tole Mour. For most people, a tall ship is a sailing vessel with three or more masts and many sails, as seen in the bygone era of the Errol Flynn movies. A tall ship, by definition, is a sailing vessel whose masts are in segments, made up of several timbers in order to give strength, and to make each mast more manageable for partial removal and repairs. The nostalgic definition is more commonly used when referring to any sailing vessel that provides sail training and participates in events such as tall ship races. For classification and race settings, the International Sail Training Association divides tall ships into three classes and several sub classes according to the vessels, sparred length and rig. A rig is the configuration, shape and number of the spars, poles, and sails.
