May 16, 2006 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Theresa Adams Lopez (310) 732-3507 TALLSHIP IRVING JOHNSON RE-COMMISSIONING CEREMONY Grounded in Ventura County Last Year, the Boat has Undergone Extensive Repairs and Will Resume Youth Sail Training Activities SAN PEDRO, Calif. – The Irving Johnson, one of two Official Tallships of the City of Los Angeles, is being re-commissioned after 11 months of repairs for 425 S. Palos Verdes Street damage sustained when the boat ran aground in Ventura County. The re- San Pedro, CA 90731 commissioning ceremony will take place at Berth 78 in the Port of Los Angeles, Tel: 310/732-3508 11:00 am on Saturday, May 20, 2006. After 5:00 p.m.: 310/732-3500 The Irving Johnson and the Exy Johnson are twin Brigantine tallships built at the Port of Los Angeles and the heart of the Los Angeles Maritime Institute’s TopSail Youth Sail Training program. The TopSail program has been successfully teaching at-risk youth in Los Angeles the joys of sailing while instilling the values of teamwork, cooperation and confidence. Garnering national press coverage in March 2005 with the heartbreaking image of the beautiful tallship aground just offshore in Ventura County, the Irving Johnson sustained substantial damage in the incident. The boat spent four days aground before being freed and towed back to Los Angeles. Repairs to the Irving Johnson were done by Gambol Industries in Long Beach, who did an impressive job of bringing the boat back to its original – if not better! - glory. The re-commissioning ceremony is a public celebration, and all are invited to attend. -

Four-masted barque PEKING - shifting Wewelfsfleth to Hamburg - September 2020 After 88 Years - Four-masted Barque PEKING Back In Her Homeport Hamburg Four-masted barque PEKING - shifting Wewelfsfleth to Hamburg - September 2020 On February 25, 1911 - 109 years ago - the four-masted barque PEKING was launched for the Hamburg ship- ping company F. Laeisz at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg. The 115-metres long, and 14.40 metres wide cargo sailing ship had no engine, and was robustly constructed for transporting saltpetre from the Chilean coast to European ports. The ship owner’s tradition of naming their ships with words beginning with the letter “P”, as well as these ships’ regular fast voyages, had sailors all over the world call the Laeisz sailing ships “Flying P-Liners”. The PEKING is part of this legendary sailing ship fleet, together with a few other survivors, such as her sister ship PASSAT, the POMMERN and PADUA, the last of the once huge fleet which still is in active service as the sail training ship KRUZENSHTERN. Before she was sold to England in 1932 as stationary training ship and renamed ARETHUSA, the PEKING passed Cape Horn 34 times, which is respected among seafarers because of its often stormy weather. In 1975 the four-master, renamed PEKING, was sold to the USA to become a museum ship near the Brooklyn Bridge in Manhattan. There the old ship quietly rusted away until 2016 due to the lack of maintenance. -Af ter returning to Germany in very poor condition in 2017 with the dock ship COMBI DOCK III, the PEKING was meticulously restored in the Peters Shipyard in Wewelsfleth to the condition she was in as a cargo sailing ship at the end of the 1920s. -

COASTAL CONSERVANCY Staff Recommendation October 5, 2006 LOS ANGELES MARITIME INSTITUTE TOPSAIL YOUTH PROGRAM SWIFT OF IPSWICH RESTORATION File No. 06-079 Project Manager: Neal Fishman/Carol Arnold RECOMMENDED ACTION: Authorization to disburse up to $200,000 to the Los Angeles Maritime Institute to repair the tall ship Swift of Ipswich for use as a waterfront attraction and a sailing classroom LOCATION: The Swift of Ipswich is docked at Berth 84, foot of 6th St., Los Angeles Harbor, San Pedro (Exhibit 1: project Location and Map). Prior to the disbursement of any Conservancy funds, the Association shall submit for review and approval of the Executive Officer of the Conservancy (“Executive Officer”) a budget, schedule, final designs and plans, and any contractors and subcontractors to be employed; 2.
