July 2016 Australian American Association in South Australia Inc. POSTAL ADDRESS: PO Box 6714 Halifax Street 5000. TEL 0400 295 853 Newsletter EMAIL: [email protected] WEBSITE www.aaasa.org.au “ThePRESIDENT Blue and’S REPORT Gold Alumni Association” a new name, a continuing organisation Hello to all of you, It is that time again for our newsletter and we have been very busy these last few months. We had a fantastic visit to the clipper ship “The City of Adelaide” with a very enjoyable lunch overlooking the water in Port Adelaide. If you missed it, you missed a great afternoon. Check out the pictures in this newsletter. We had a lovely party at Marty’s house for Australia Day. Ray Winterfield brought his guitar and we had a sing -a-long. We shared good food and fun. Another “no cost” function to members. We, again, had a really memorable Coral Sea celebration. This is so important to our association and the other associations which help us remember the connection with Australia and America. My only wish is that more of our members would take part and share this auspicious occasion with us. Check the newsletter pictures. We have said “Good-bye” to Nancy and Bill Schaff as they have moved to Hawaii. They always came to functions, gave good support for ideas and helped when needed. We will miss them but wish them all the best. Dr. Lage is still on her travels back and forth across the US. From the reports I have heard, she is enjoying herself very much.

  • FINLAND and the ÅLAND ISLANDS Monday
FINLAND AND THE ÅLAND ISLANDS Monday 21 July Today we crossed from Tallinn, Estonia to Helsinki, Finland by ferry. The first thing to do was a major and quite expensive stock-up shop at the supermarket over the road, in anticipation of more expensive times to come in Scandinavia. Then along to check in early with the Finnish Eckero Line, and after a wait of an hour or so we were among the last to be loaded, along with many other motorhomes and heavy trucks. Big ship, with many similarities to those used for Channel crossings. The only problem was to get away from the live music in the public areas, much enjoyed by most passengers. Also popular was lying out in the sun on and around the small covered pool in what was a beautiful blue day – windy, though. We finally found a relatively quiet spot to read and use the internet before going on deck again to watch the ship’s spectacular entry to and through the Helsinki archipelago. You can never watch the final docking because of the need to get down to the cars and vans, so the first we saw of Finland was through the open rear of the vessel. We had the Tomtom all set to guide us to the camp site, but even so it is a stressful business being dumped in a busy part of a busy city like Helsinki without much idea of where you are or how you get to where you want to go. The camp site, in the suburb of Rastila, is about 10 km north-east of the city.

The end result is a boat that is has poise, proportion and purpose. Sweeping body lines of the hull wrap around the boat in an almost fortress-like manner. The superstructure has shape and interest - this is anything but a monolithic block. Upon this, elegantly perched, is the wheelhouse which puts you in a commanding position with panoramic vision for pleasurable cruising and ease of handling. This is a boat that looks and feels good on water. Inside, this meticulous eye for design continues with a determined and considered interior design approach throughout the boat. Style, symmetry and substance mean that life aboard isn’t in any way compromised. The Voyager, is nothing short of than a luxurious floating suite of rooms. Category As a category C craft you can cruise with confidence, safe in the knowledge that the Voyager has been designed and built for conditions up to, and including, wind force 6 and wave heights up to, and including, 2 metres (based on mean average wave heights). 1954, Addio Trieste... The Triestine Community of Melbourne Adriana Nelli A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Victoria University November 2000 -^27 2->v<^, \U6IL THESIS 994.5100451 NEL 30001007178181 Ne 1 li, Adriana 1954, addio Trieste— the Triestine community of MeIbourne I DECLARATION I hereby declare that this thesis is the product of my original work, including all translations from Italian and Triestine. An earlier form of Chapter 5 appeared in Robert Pascoe and Jarlath Ronayne, eds, The passeggiata of Exile: The Italian Story in Australia (Victoria University, Melbourne, 1998). Parts of my argument also appeared in 'L'esperienza migratoria triestina: L'identita' culturale e i suoi cambiamenti' in Gianfranco Cresciani, ed., Giuliano-Dalmati in Australia: Contributi e testimonianze per una storia (Associazione Giuliani nel Mondo, Trieste, 1999). Adriana Nelli ABSTRACT Triestine migration to Australia is the direct consequence of numerous disputations over the city's political boundaries in the immediate post- World War II period. As such the triestini themselves are not simply part of an overall migratory movement of Italians who took advantage of Australia's post-war immigration program, but their migration is also the reflection of an important period in the history of what today is known as the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region.. 1954 marked the beginning of a brief but intense migratory flow from the city of Trieste towards Australia. Following a prolonged period of Anglo-American administration, the city had been returned to Italian jurisdiction once more; and with the dismantling of the Allied caretaker government and the subsequent economic integration of Trieste into the Italian State, a climate of uncertainty and precariousness had left the Triestines psychologically disenchanted and discouraged.
