OCTOBER 1944 The Bathurst Class Minesweeper-Corvette H.M.A.S. Geelong, a sister ship to H.M.A.S. Castlemaine was sunk in a collision with the U.S. Tanker “York” off New Guinea on the 18th October 1944. Patron: Fortunately there was no loss of life in this incident. Governor of Victoria OCTOBER 1944 ____________________ In October 1944 at the Battle of “Leyte Gulf” the following R.A.N. ships engaged, H.M.A.S ‘s Australia, Shropshire, Arunta, Warramunga, Manoora, Kanimbla, Westralia, Gascoyne and H.D.M.L. No.1074. President: During the Battle of Leyte Gulf, a kamikaze Aichi 99 dive bomber crashed LCDR Roger Blythman into the foremast of H.M.A.S. Australia killing 30 Officers and ratings, RANR RFD RET’D including H.M.A.S. Australia’s Commanding Officer Captain E.F.V. Dechaineux. Published by the Fleet Air Arm Association of Australia Inc Editor Ron Batchelor email [email protected] Print Post Approved - PP100002097 VOLUME 28 No 2 2017 JUNE 2017 The RAN Centenary of Aviation was celebrated on 20th May with a dinner dance at the Fleet Air Arm Museum. Those who could attend thoroughly enjoyed the event, which featured a lovely meal sitting under the wings of old aircraft, and listening to the address given by Chief of Navy and COMFAA. WO Ben Sime, the FAA’s highest decorated member, was there to view an unveiling of his portrait, and Guy Sherborne (the son of CMDR Fred Sherborne) told us something of his father’s remarkable story before opening a display of his artefacts, kindly sponsored by Northrop- Grumman Australia. All in all it was a truly memorable night. Speaking of reunions, there are two coming up later this year. In October we will commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the deployment of the first RAN Helicopter Flight to Vietnam. The RANHFV was to become the highest decorated of any RAN unit in that war. Details of the reunion can be found on the website or later in this publication. Towards the end of the year we will also be commemorating the retirement of two stalwart aircraft of the FAA: the AS350 Squirrel and the Seahawk S70B2. Both are remarkable, but the Seahawk has the distinction of being the only aircraft on the FAA inventory that has been involved in continuous warlike operations throughout its entire life. -

Requiem for an Able Seaman - Much of the convoy work took place between 6092 Able Seaman Henry Louis Sierra Leone and Greenock in Scotland under the constant threat of U-boat attack and at times in the Emanuel Sellick face of appalling weather. In July 1941 Arawa was John Perryman converted to a troopship at which time the well- seasoned Pop returned to Australia. Henry Sellick joined the Royal Australian Navy during the First World War on 10 April 1917, aged Pop Sellick’s next posting was to the Tribal class 15. He was one of many young boys who began destroyer HMAS Arunta which he joined as a life in the navy in the training ship HMAS Tingira; member of the commissioning crew on 30 March a familiar sight to Sydney-siders, secure at her 1942. Arunta, was modern and well-armed and moorings in Rose Bay. her crew quickly became an enthusiastic, tight-knit and capable ship’s company. He joined the Royal Australian Navy from Risdon Vale, Tasmania, as a general entry sailor on 30 June 1967 undertaking his basic training at HMAS Cerberus. In September 1967 he completed category training as an Ordinary Seaman Quartermaster Gunner and was subsequently posted to the guided missile destroyer HMAS Hobart in which he deployed to Vietnam during her second tour of duty in March 1968. -

VOL. 53, NO. 1, ISSUE 219 - NEW SERIES 2020 Tambua (3,566/1938) arriving Sydney July 1963 (J.Y.Freeman) Tambua was built for the Colonial Sugar Refining Co. Ltd, Sydney, by Caledon Ship Building & Engineering Co., Dundee, in 1938, having been completed in July of that year. She was designed to carry bagged sugar in the holds and molasses in wing tanks. With a crew of 37, she traded Sydney, North Queensland ports, Fiji and New Zealand, back loading building materials, farming equipment, foodstuffs, railway tracks etc. She was renamed Maria Rosa when sold in 1968 and went to scrap under that name at Kaohsiung where she arrived 7 January 1973. PRINT POST PUBLICATION NUMBER 100003238 ISSN 0815-0052. All rights reserved. Across 25/26 January the amphibious ship HMNZS Canterbury attended the Ports of Auckland SeePort Festival 2020. Then on 28 January, in company with HMNZ Ships Wellio and Haa, the ship began a series of training and work-up exercises after the Christmas break. After three years of the design and build effort by HHI at the Ulsan shipyard, the new tanker Aotaroa began sea trials off the South Korean coast on 10 December ahead of her upcoming journey home to New Zealand. On 3 December the patrol vessel HMNZS Wellio in company with the Tuia 250 flotilla arrived in Wellington Harbour, including HMB Endeavour, Sirit of New Zeaand and a waka hourua. The national event celebrated New Zealand‟s voyaging heritage, and mark 250 years since the first onshore encounters between Māori and Captain James Cook and the crew of HMB Endeavour. -

CHAPTER 5 GUADALCANAL—PACIFIC HINGE-PIN RILE events moved towards a clash at the southern end of the key W island chain, similar moves at the northern end—in the Bismarc k Archipelago and New Guinea—laid the future 's foundations there. The Japanese stronghold at Rabaul, with the subsidiary bases at Lae, Salamaua , Gasmata, Kavieng, Finschhafen, Buka, Faisi, Lorengau and Kieta, were a constant and growing threat to Allied communications and to Australia's northern defences . At this period Rabaul, headquarters of 8th Base Force , which was responsible for the defence of the area, was the only majo r Japanese command of land-based air forces maintaining heavy and con- tinuous air action against the enemy . Here the 25th Air Flotilla, under the command of Rear-Admiral Yamada, concentrated its full strength agains t Port Moresby in frequent attacks, usually with heavy formations of 27 o r more bombers escorted by an equal number of Zero fighters .' The expansion of existing Allied aerodrome facilities was considere d the best method of countering this threat . To an extent the Japanese were at a disadvantage in that Truk, their nearest base to Rabaul, was sea - separated from them by some 700 miles, and their home bases were mor e than three times that distance away . All supplies and reinforcements , including fighter aircraft, were of necessity seaborne, and replacement s took from two to three weeks . Australia could reinforce New Guinea more rapidly, and her seaborne communications (Townsville to Milne Bay o r Moresby approximately 600 miles) could be under good air protectio n after the provision of suitable airfields . -

CHAPTER 7 A.S.I.S. Dafila In March 1942, I joined the Eastern Mediterranean Fleet Armament Stores and Issuing Ship Dajila as Third Officer, resplendent in all new uniforms and completely new kit. The ship of 1 ,940 tons had 9 British Officers; a Sudanese crew of 40 and a Royal Marine detachment of 10. The Sudanese crew only spoke Arabic and once again I was faced with a new language to learn. They were also devout Muslims and the ship's routine was organised around their thrice daily prayers. They were splendid physical specimens, most being over six feet ; they were first class seaman and boilermen , cheerful, hardworking , honest and spotlessly clean in their clothes and habits in marked contrast to the local Egyptian Arabs. Alexandria based, our task was to re-supply the fleet with ammunition , a task that kept us pretty busy. Our berth in Alexandria was in the outer harbour in the ammunition anchorage that we shared with a number of ammunition lighters . Close to the entrance but well awa y from the dockyard facilities we were responsible for the security of the area and our Ro yal Marines acted as sentries . The theory was that the anchorage was relatively safe as the Germans were unlikel y to attack that area because of the close proximity of the demobilised French Fleet that was moored between us and the dockyard area. Neither the Germans nor Italians seems to have been acquainted with this theor y and we suffered a number of bombing attacks and twice mines had to be rendered safe in our close proximity.
