The species occupies small caves in boulder fields in lowland woodland. Lepidoptera and Coleoptera dominate the diet, with a strong preference for the latter before and during the breeding season (November to April). Foraging areas change seasonally according to wind direction, and foraging occurs in gaps in the woodland. Mature native woodland is favoured due to the abundance of Coleoptera in this habitat. Habitat management on Silhouette has removed alien plants from around the roosts and improved foraging conditions for the bat. This has been accompanied by increases in foraging activity in managed areas and an increase in breeding activity. The population at La Passe on Silhouette has increased from 14 to 25 ind. in the 1990s to 32 in 2008. The management approach is to be extended to another area of Silhouette where bats have been located and should also be used on Mahé. Increases in human development activity on Mahé and Silhouette may threaten population recovery of this bat, and legal controls on development in appropriate habitat are urgently needed. With effective legal controls and intensive habitat manage- ment recovery of this species is possible. On Silhouette Island, 2 separate populations are known, one may be restricted to a few individuals, the other numbers 32 ind. as of March 2008. This population has been the focus of intensive research and conservation management efforts since 1997, which are described here. MATERIALS AND METHODS Population size. The La Passe roost of Coleura sey- chellensis on Silhouette Island has been monitored since 1997. Installation of roost CCTV in 2006 has allowed frequent and accurate counts. All other identi- fied roost sites on this island have been visited at least once a year since 2005 (Grande Barbe in March/April and December every year and Pointe Etienne in March/April) and searched for signs of recent occu- pancy — the presence of bats or of recent guano. The vocalisations of the Critically Endangered Seychelles sheath-tailed bat Coleura seychellensis are described. Four call types are identified : complex social calls, orientation calls within the roost, open habitat orientation calls and foraging calls. The open habitat orientation calls and foraging calls are quasi-CF, the latter having alternating frequencies. The function of the alternating calls is discussed and it is concluded that in this species the lower frequency tone is used for navigation (being identical to the open habitat orientation calls) and the higher frequency tone for prey detection in cluttered environments. Social vocalisations of the Seychelles sheath-tailed bat Coleura seychellensis are described from observation made during the breeding season. Four main call types used in social situations were recorded. These vary from simple screech calls used in aggressive or distressed contexts to appeasement and male ‘song’. Juveniles used a combination of high pitched screeches and appeasement calls to attract lactating females. Males ‘song’ was basic in form, consisting of a single repeated syllable. Individual variation in this syllable was detected in frequency and duration, this allows individual recognition.     NABU’s Biodiversity Assessment at the Kafa Biosphere Reserve, Ethiopia Bats and fruit bats at the Kafa Biosphere Reserve Ingrid Kaipf, Hartmut Rudolphi and Holger Meinig 206 BATS Highlights ´ This is the first time a systematic bat assessment has been conducted in the Kafa BR. ´ We recorded four fruit bat species, one of which is new for the Kafa BR but not for Ethiopia. ´ We recorded 29 bat species by capture or sound recording. Four bat species are new for the Kafa BR but occur in other parts of Ethiopia. ´ We recorded calls of a new species in the horseshoe bat family for Ethiopia via echolocation. This data needs to be confirmed by capture, because there is a chance it could be a species of Rhinolophus new to science. ´ We suggest two flagship species: the long-haired rousette for the bamboo forest and the hammer-headed fruit bat for the Alemgono Wetland and Gummi River. ´ The bamboo forests had the most bat activity at night, but the Gojeb Wetland had the highest species richness due to its highly diverse habitats. ´ All caves throughout the entire Kafa BR should be protected as bat roosts. ´ It will be necessary to develop an old tree management concept for the biosphere reserve to protect and increase tree roosts for bats. 207 NABU’s Biodiversity Assessment at the Kafa Biosphere Reserve, Ethiopia 1. The small island of Aguiguan now supports the only persisting population. We studied abundance and natural history of this population from 1995–2008. There was a likely population increase during the study, with 359–466 (minimum and maximum) bats counted at caves in 2008. Bats roosted only in caves, primarily those of relatively larger size. Bats were detected in only seven of 95 caves; three caves were always occupied when surveyed.
