It highlights major socio-ecological and management regime changes in the last 150 years. This period started when the Scottish explorer Dr. David Livingstone documented it in 1867, through the colonial era when Zambia was called Northern Rhodesia to the present time (2013). In the 1860s there was a red locust out break and the area was as a consequence of this outbreak placed under the International Red Locust Control Service until 1956 when it was declared a Game Reserve by the Government of Northern Rhodesia, National Park in 1972 and in 2005 a Ramsar site and Important Bird Area. We also provide an account of the cyclic phases of wet and dry spells of the lake recorded between 1867 - 2013. In the 20th century in particular, the wet and dry spells created an idea habitat for the locust breeding which attracted in the first instance, the attention of the colonial government and the International Red Locust Control Service. -
Research Project Summmary Main Research
Research project summmary Main research fields: zoology and reproductive physiology specialization fields: Animal reproduction, Behavioural ecology, Behavioural physiology, sociobiology. My research interests focus mainly on the sociobiology of African rodent moles (Bathyergidae) and in particular the extrinsic and intrinsic factors that have led to the evolution of sociality in this remarkable endemic African family. My research group is fundamentally interested in elucidating the modes and mechanisms that are responsible for reproductive suppression in the non-reproductive females of the various species. Research is currently being directed at the neuroendocrine and molecular levels to elucidate the extent, nature and location of GnRH suppression. We are also interested in the photic and thermic input in the control of reproduction in seasonally reproducing mole-rats and the potential lack of a role in aseasonally breeding bathyergids. Long term population studies on social mole-rats from mesic and xeric environments are underway. These studies are providing empirical data on the spatial distribution of colonies, longevities, factors restricting and promoting dispersal, vagility, foraging methods and lifetime reproductive success. We are interested in the genetic relatedness of colonies and also the type of paternal skew operational in the social genera. This work is being carried out in collaboration with Dr Chris Faulkes at Queen Mary and Westfield College, London. Students currently under supervision MSc (research) 1. KENYA and TANZANIA TRIP REPORT Sept 25-Oct 23, 2009 PART 1 - Classic Kenya text and photos by Adrian Binns Sept 25 / Day 1: Blue Post Thika; Castle Forest We began the morning with an unexpected Little Sparrowhawk followed by a Great Sparrowhawk, both in the skies across the main road from the Blue Post Hotel in Thika. The lush grounds of the Blue Post are bordered by the twin waterfalls of the Chania and Thika, both rivers originating from the nearby Aberdare Mountain Range. It is a good place to get aquatinted with some of the more common birds, especially as most can be seen in close proximity and very well. Eastern Black-headed Oriole, Cinnamon-chested Bee- eater, Little Bee-eater, White-eyed Slaty Flycatcher, Collared Sunbird, Bronzed Mannikin, Speckled Mousebird and Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird were easily found. Looking down along the river course and around the thundering waterfall we found a pair of Giant Kingfishers as well as Great Cormorant, Grey Heron and Common Sandpiper, and two Nile Monitors slipped behind large boulders. A fruiting tree provided a feast for Yellow-rumped Seedeaters, Violet-backed Starlings, Spot-flanked Barbet (right), White-headed Barbet as a Grey-headed Kingfisher, an open woodland bird, made sorties from a nearby perch. www.wildsidenaturetours.com www.eastafricanwildlifesafaris.com © Adrian Binns Page 1 It was a gorgeous afternoon at the Castle Forest Lodge set deep in forested foothills of the southern slope of Mt. Kenya. While having lunch on the verandah, overlooking a fabulous valley below, we had circling Long-crested Eagle (above right), a distant Mountain Buzzard and African Harrier Hawk. -

Tanzania Socio-Economic Database Elide S Mwanri National Bureau of Statistics TANZANIA 1 Presentation • About TSED • How we can make use of Indicators • Examples of some MKUKUTA/MDGs indicators • Challenges and Next steps • Discussions 2 What is TSED? • It is an indicator and database administrator system that: – Facilitates systematization, storage and analysis of performance indicators – Contain tools for the generation of tables, graphs, reports and maps – Allows grouping of indicators in different frameworks – Currently has over 500 indicators from recognized sources • It has incrementally developed in the last few years with organizational, technical and financial support by the UN system and government • Institutionally set within the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) supported by 21 institutions, ministries and departments. Maintenance and updating is done at NBS • Linkages with the private sector and non government research institutions for training and capacity building. • Currently has over 500 indicators from recognized sources • TSED is currently running on stand-alone and on web (www.tsed.org). Data not easily accessible: - disperse in various institutions - restricted use within Ministries and Institutions - format not easy to access, read and process - no proper documentation (definitions/metadata) 4 Objectives Make data more accessible – managing the growing amount of information and enhancing availability and timely dissemination of socio-economic data in order to support policy analysis and decision making – Provide users with a comprehensive set of indicators that help Govt., donors and other interested people to analyze the situation in Tanzania Enhance statistical capacity and literacy – improve knowledge relevant to policy design /evaluation. -

Hill, Pietermaritzburg. 6 Fire-as Master and Servant: Its Influence in the Bioclimatic Regions of Trans-Saharan Africa JOHN PHILLIPS* DESPITE MAN's remarkable advances in so many fields of endeavor in Trans-Saharan Africa, there is still much he does not know regarding some of the seemingly simple matters of life and living in the "Dark" Continent: One of these blanks in our knowldege is how the most effectively to thwart fire as an uncontrolled destroyer of vegetation and how best to use it to our own advantage. We know fire as a master, we have learned some thing about fire as a servant-but we still have much to do before we can direct this servant so as to win its most effective service. I review-against a background of the literature and a personal ex perience .of over half a century-some of the matters of prime inter est and significance in the role and the use of fire in Trans-Saharan Africa. These include, inter alia, the sins of the master and the merits of the servant, in a range of bioclimatic regions from the humid for ests, through the various gradations of aridity of the wooded savanna to .the subdesert. In an endeavor to discuss the whole subject objectively and sys tematically, I have dealt with the effects of fire upon vegetation, upon animal associates, upon aerillI factors and upon the complex fac tors of the soil. -

The vocalisations of the Critically Endangered Seychelles sheath-tailed bat Coleura seychellensis are described. Four call types are identified : complex social calls, orientation calls within the roost, open habitat orientation calls and foraging calls. The open habitat orientation calls and foraging calls are quasi-CF, the latter having alternating frequencies. The function of the alternating calls is discussed and it is concluded that in this species the lower frequency tone is used for navigation (being identical to the open habitat orientation calls) and the higher frequency tone for prey detection in cluttered environments.
