Madero y José María Pino Suárez, el estado de Sonora experimentó un ambiente de tensión. Se registra- ron pequeños brotes de rebeldía armada en diversas localidades de la entidad, donde ciudadanos —mas no el gobierno regional— atacaron cuarteles u oficinas del gobierno federal. El ataque a Álamos es de es- pecial interés para el tema que nos ocupa. Un puñado de hombres atacó “La Ciudad de los Portales” (como se le conoce a Álamos), en marzo de 1913, y fueron derrotados por la guarnición militar de la localidad. Entre los agresores, se identificó como líder a un maestro normalista de origen potosino, bien conocido en la región por su labor educativa en distintas poblaciones, por sus ideas radicales y por su extraña personalidad. Se trataba del maestro Luis G. Monzón, quien fue puesto tras las rejas en la cárcel de Álamos. En esos momentos, seguro Monzón veía incierto su futuro, sin saber con cer- teza cuánto tiempo permanecería detenido, si sería fusilado, exiliado o liberado, en el mejor de los casos. Aunque en 1913 no lo sabía, Monzón jugaría un papel muy importante cuatro años después, al ser elegido diputado para representar a Sonora en el Congreso Constituyente.1 1 Bojórquez es la única fuente que señala que la actividad opositora de Monzón data de mucho antes a 1910, pues dice que fue magonista y antirreeleccionista, pero no • 41 • DR © 2018. -

DISCUSSION GUIDE FOR “LEGACIES OF THE MEXICAN REVOLUTION” a video interview with Professor Aurora Gómez-Galvarriato Organizing • What were the immediate and long-term legacies of the Mexican Questions Revolution within Mexico? • What legacies of the Mexican Revolution were intended from its outset? Which were achieved and which were not achieved? Summary Aurora Gómez-Galvarriato is a Professor of Historical Studies at Colegio de México. In this 18-minute video, Professor Gómez-Galvarriato discusses how perceptions of the legacies of the Mexican Revolution have changed over time. She talks about the immediate legacies of the Revolution, intended outcomes that did not materialize, and the legacies that have persisted until today. Objectives During and after viewing this video, students will: • identify the immediate and long-term consequences of the Mexican Revolution; • discuss to what extent the goals of the original revolutionaries were achieved by the end of the Mexican Revolution; and • evaluate whether the benefits of the Mexican Revolution justified the costs. Adelita, for God’s sake I beg you, calm the fire of my passion, because I love you and I cannot resist it and my faithful heart suffers for you. 3 “La Adelita” was one of the most popular songs of the Mexican Revolution (1910–1920). According to some sources (see Soto 1990:44), this ballad was originally inspired by a Durangan woman who had joined the Maderista movement4 at an early age. Troubadours made the song—and Adelita her- self—a popular emblem of the Revolution. As Baltasar Dromundo put it, “las guitarras de todas partes se iban haciendo eruditas en ese canto hasta que por fin la Revolución hizo de ella su verdadero emblema nacional” (guitar ists from all over were becoming experts in that song and it became the true em- blem of the Revolution) ( 1936:40). Significantly, Adelita’s surname, as well as the family names of many other soldaderas (soldier-women), remained virtually unknown. However, the popular songs composed in honor of these women contributed enormously to their fame and to documenting their role in the Revolution. -

A New Factor in American Destiny: Visions of Porfirio Díaz and the Politics of “Logical Paternalism” JASON RUIZ Now, one president for twenty years. Some will say that this is not republican. Possibly not, but it is business. —Charles F. Lummis (1902) For an elderly foreign dictator, Porfirio Díaz was tremendously popular with American travelers and observers in the wake of the Spanish-American War. As the United States grappled with its growing power in the hemisphere, well-to-do Americans traveling in Mexico clamored to meet the President and Carmen, his sophisticated young wife.1 The presidential couple indulged a surprising number of meeting requests, and their lucky American guests described meeting Díaz with an almost palpable sense of awe. “As you wait in the anteroom to meet the president,” wrote one American supporter, “you are about to meet what is probably the greatest figure—as it is unquestionably the most romantic—in the world’s politics this half century . and before you know it you are seated vis-à-vis with the creator of a new factor in American destiny.”2 Those who could not secure a personal audience with “the foremost man of the American hemisphere” sent home postcards featuring official-looking photographs of the President or pasted cartes-de-visite in scrapbooks commemorating their journey to a “strange land near home,” as one primer for American schoolchildren called Mexico in 1902.3 Some Americans wrote travelogues crediting him with the amazing transformation of Mexico from a dangerous and unknown backwater into a country that closely resembled American prescriptions for a progressive, modern “sister republic.” Newspapers like the Los Angeles Times and New York Times called him a “hero of peace” or the “lion-hearted son” of Mexico. -

Redistribution of the land Agrarian Reform would result in reduced productivity, and he also wished to avoid that. Land redistribution is very modest: 3,000,000 acres.
