Mark Chapman – A Profile

This season Chappie is back in force after injuries curtailed his performances in 2016/17. A T20 century on New Years’s Day and another on Saturday in the Ford Trophy One Dayer. In recent weeks, 71 for the Aces and 97 for Parnell plus this ton, show him to be in tremendous form. Time to look at his marvelous cricketing career – only 23 now, Mark has heaps of experience starting from when he represented Hong Kong Under 15s. Vice of Hong Kong in the last 2nd Tier World Cup, his career stats are outstanding. Mark is eligible for selection (his Dad, Peter, is a New Zealander) and Mark has shelved aspirations for representing Hong Kong further. He was Head Prefect at King’s College, captained their 1st XI and, last year, completed his engineering degree. Mark’s performances at representative level speak for themselves – as can be seen from ESPNcricinfo’s stats below (to 6.2.2018 – yesterday’s 41 not included):

Points – 1st innings points shared, 3 each plus bonus points.

DAY 2. AND THE RAIN CAME DOWN Following a miserable, drizzly morning with no prospect of play starting on time, lunch was taken early at 12.45 pm. After lunch the heavens opened and it was no surprise when the umpires confered with the captains. Absolutely no prospect of play and the game was abandoned. Then, less than 15 minutes later, the sun came out – Auckland weather to a T! But, whilst we had some 90 minutes of sunshine, the rain continued to threaten and then came a final deluge. The Premier players by then had dispersed and it was left to the Pressies, prompted by Ian Trott who looked in after the Auckland Grammar game was abandoned, to remove and pack away the covers. A very necessary measure to save the pitch block from fungal attack and other damage. This was done in steady drizzle and it was good to note that the pitch itself, apart from one very small damp patch was as dry as a bone – the covers had done their duty!

PLAY ABANDONED - PRESSIES, & IAN TROTT, PACK AWAY THE COVERS:

ONE CAN SEE WHY THERE WAS NO PLAY!! THANKS GO TO IAN TROTT, ROD EDDOWES, GREG OLLIVER, GREG JAMES & MARC O’GORMAN FOR COMPLETING THIS TASK

Lost Watch

A young lad, Sidhaarth Kumar, while training on Friday 26th January at 7 p.m. placed his fitbit watch on the bowling machine stand at the Centre indoor nets and forgot to pick it up.

He returned next day but the watch is missing. It has particular value being a present to him. Someone may inadvertently have picked it up and, if so, please give Sidhaarth or his family a call on 021577699 or drop it into the Club Office at the TJC St Edward’s School, Oxford, & English Public Schools

Mention was made in last week’s Update, 141, that the AUCC opening bat, Joe Barrett, had attended St Edward’s. This prompted Rod Eddowes to comment that Douglas Bader, the WW2 RAF fighter ace, had also attended the School. Bader captained the 1st XI and played one 1st Class match, for the RAF vs Army in 1931 scoring 65 and 1. He was in the running for selection for England at ruby when he lost both legs in a flying accident. He was able to return to the RAF and flying and the rest is history. Guy Gibson VC (Commander of the Dambusters Squadron, 617) also attended St Edwards. The two schools where Ian Trott coached in recent years, St John’s, Leatherhead, and Denstone College played regular games against St Edwards. Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery is an icon of St John’s – a huge portait of his hangs in the School Dining Hall Past UK players at Parnell who attended St John’s were Paul Cohen, Ben Frost, Simon Roberts, and Henry Strudwick . Cam Willis, here currently, attended Denstone College and played St Edwards. Others from English Public Schools were Simon and Tim Hawk, Eton, Lalit Bose, Harrow and Olly Elson, Oakham.
