Community Profile – Ynyswen, Treorchy and Cwmparc Version 5 – will be updated and reviewed next on 29.05.20 Treorchy is a town and electoral ward in the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf in the Rhondda Fawr valley. Treorchy is one of the 16 communities that make up the Rhondda. Treorchy is bordered by the villages of Cwmparc and Ynyswen which are included within the profile. The population is 7,694, 4,404 of which are working age. Treorchy has a thriving high street with many shops and cafes and is in the running as one of the 3 Welsh finalists for Highs Street of the Year award. There are 2 large supermarkets and an Treorchy High Street industrial estate providing local employment. There is also a High school with sixth form Cwmparc Community Centre opportunities for young people in the area Cwmparc is a village and district of the community of Treorchy, 0.8 miles from Treorchy. It is more of a residential area, however St Georges Church Hall located in Cwmparc offers a variety of activities for the community, including Yoga, playgroup and history classes. Ynyswen is a village in the community of Treorchy, 0.6 miles north of Treorchy. It consists mostly of housing but has an industrial estate which was once the site of the Burberry’s factory, one shop and the Forest View Medical Centre. Although there are no petrol stations in the Treorchy area, transport is relatively good throughout the valley. However, there is no Sunday bus service in Cwmparc. Treorchy has a large population of young people and although there are opportunities to engage with sport activities it is evident that there are fewer affordable activities for young women to engage in. -

5/20/2011 Great Western Railway ships - Wikipedi… Great Western Railway ships From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Great Western Railway’s ships operated in Great Western Railway connection with the company's trains to provide services to (shipping services) Ireland, the Channel Islands and France.[1] Powers were granted by Act of Parliament for the Great Western Railway (GWR) to operate ships in 1871. The following year the company took over the ships operated by Ford and Jackson on the route between Wales and Ireland. Services were operated between Weymouth, the Channel Islands and France on the former Weymouth and Channel Islands Steam Packet Company routes. Smaller GWR vessels were also used as tenders at Plymouth and on ferry routes on the River Severn and River Dart. The railway also operated tugs and other craft at their docks in Wales and South West England. A guide and list to a collection of Historic Railway Documents www.railarchive.org.uk to e mail click here December 2017 1 Since July 1971, this private collection of printed railway documents from pre grouping and pre nationalisation railway companies based in the UK; has sought to expand it‟s collection with the aim of obtaining a printed sample from each independent railway company which operated (or obtained it‟s act of parliament and started construction). There were over 1,500 such companies and to date the Rail Archive has sourced samples from over 800 of these companies. Early in 2001 the collection needed to be assessed for insurance purposes to identify a suitable premium. The premium cost was significant enough to warrant a more secure and sustainable future for the collection. Rhyd-y-car (41) What is it? ! This is a row of six cottages from Rhyd-y-car in Merthyr. In 1801, Merthyr was the largest town in Wales, with a population of 7,000. What do we know about the houses? ! They were moved from Merthyr in 1982 and re-erected in the Museum between 1984 and 1987. ! This is a good example of an early terrace. There were two terraces at Rhyd-y-car; there were 16 houses in one, and 13 in the other. ! The cottages were built around 1795-1800 by Richard Crawshay, an Ironmaster in Merthyr, to provide housing for his workers. They portray the following periods, showing how they might have looked if they hadn’t been moved to St Fagans: 1805; 1855; 1895; 1925; 1955; 1985. Rhyd-y-car (41) Who lived here? 1805 ! The cottage is decorated as the home of a young family from west Wales working in the iron ore mine. The rustic oak furniture comes from west Wales – it was given to the young couple as wedding presents. ! The iron ore miners belonged to the upper working class, and could afford to buy luxury goods. 1855 ! This was the home of Margaret Rosser, a 48-year-old widow who was originally from Carmarthenshire, her son John, who was 19, a 14-year-old daughter and, another son who was 12. Mrs Rosser made a living from selling milk around the area, her son John was a miner and the younger son probably worked underground too. ! Her husband, William Rosser, had died by the time of the 1851 Census. -
