DIDN’T THEY HAVE A LOVELY DAY PART FOUR…

Completing our look back at some of the games and grounds visited by our Clubs in the FA Vase which hopefully will recall a few memories for some.

NEW MILTON TOWN 2010-11 Norton Sports Lost 3-2 When looking back over the seasons this game stood out like the proverbial sore thumb because I had never heard of Norton Sports! Background for them wasn’t easy to find other than that they were based in Sittingbourne in Kent and played in the then Kent League, in the Premier Division. It was a long journey for New Milton, then in the Wessex Premier, for a First Qualifying Round tie, and a defeat by the odd goal in five. Norton Sports changed their name to Woodstock Sports at the end of the season before folding in 2015. Perhaps it is ironic to report that their last Vase game as Norton was a defeat at Fisher and the result was repeated in 2015, in their new guise. NEWPORT 2015-16 Portishead Town Won 3-1 First Round Proper and a trip to the side of the Severn Estuary on 31 October for Newport and opposition from Division One of the Western League. A nice Town and a friendly Club but proof again of the difference standards of Ground Grading. The changing rooms were a considerable distance from the pitch with no form of walkway, the only seats were situated on a raised concretes square but were single and not affixed to the ground or each other and there was a game being played on a neighbouring pitch from which the sound of the referee’s whistle easily carried. The game itself was a little one sided with goals from Josh Maloney (2) and Liam Triggs securing a routine victory for the Island side who went on to reach the 4th Round that season. PETERSFIELD TOWN 2013-14 Welton Rovers Won 2-0 This was the season that Petersfield finished top of Division One and the First Qualifying Round of the Vase saw them head to Midsomer Norton, some ten miles south west of Bath, and Western League Division One opposition in the shape of Welton Rovers. The ground is not the easiest to find despite being virtually on the side of a main road and parking is a similar problem. A good result for Petersfield on the day which they followed with a no doubt enjoyable win over Fawley before bowing out to Hartley Wintney. RINGWOOD TOWN 2010-11 Fisher Lost 2-1 A journey to London’s docklands for a game between the Wessex Division One and the Kent League with victory going to the latter by the odd goal in three. This was the seventh season in which Ringwood had entered the Vase and their seventh defeat in the first game played. Whether playing at Fisher then was a daunting proposition on the day is unsure but back in their Southern League days their discipline on and off the pitch left an awful lot to be desired. ROMSEY TOWN 2017-18 AFC Aldermaston Won 3-2 A club with Wessex League history, Aldermaston were playing their first ever Vase game after returning to Step Six in the Hellenic League East. The goals came from a Pearce Farren with a pair and Liam Magee with a single; whilst Dan Alliston helped himself to both goals for the hosts. Romsey went on to beat Bournemouth in the next round before losing to Hamble Club. The previous meeting between Romsey and Aldermaston at the Bypass was as far back as 2004 in the Wessex League and finished in a one all draw. TOTTON & ELING 2018-19 Cheddar AFC Lost 1-0 The “Millers” had beaten Oldland Abbotonians and East Cowes Vics to reach the First Round Proper and a trip to Somerset and Cheddar who were to finish the season as runners up in the Western League Division One. A single goal from Adam Jones decided the encounter in what was Cheddar’s second meeting with the Wessex League, having lost 5-2 to Laverstock & Ford some five years before. It will surprise nobody that Cheddar are known as “The Cheesemakers”. Cheddar had reached this round courtesy of a 2-0 win over South West Peninsula side Newton Abbot Spurs.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 40

US PORTSMOUTH 2010-11 Mile Oak Lost 4-2 Eastwards to Sussex and Division Two side Mile Oak for a tie in the First Qualifying Round. Mile Oak is on the northern fringe of Brighton and Hove and the ground is both high and exposed. The visitors finished fifth in Wessex One but went out of the Vase at the first hurdle. The two Clubs also met in the Competition in 2004- 05 with Mile Oak again winning but it was 3-1 that time. VERWOOD TOWN 2014-15 AFC St Austell Lost 6-1 A long trip – 160 miles each way – and no reward for Verwood in this Third Round tie. The “Potters” had beaten Roman Glass St George 6-4), Fareham Town (2-0) and Plymouth Parkway (5-4) to reach this stage while St. Austell, who were to be South West Peninsula Premier League Champions come the season’s end, had scored fifteen goals in the earlier Rounds and showed why on the day. A goal from Russ Dyer just after the hour was scant consolation for the Dorset side in the end. This was the second time Verwood had reached the Third Round – the previous occasion was in 2010/11 and they have yet to reach the same heights again. The hosts had already hit four before the interval with Liam Eddy getting two. Lee Whetter, Dan Nancarrow, Dan Lean and Damon Mulready also on target. WHITCHURCH UNITED 2014-15 Chippenham Park Lost 3-2 Chippenham Park were to all intents and purposes Chippenham Town’s reserve side playing in the Western League Division One and because the senior side had a Southern League Premier fixture at home on the Saturday the Vase game was played on Sunday afternoon. Goals from Ryan Lambert and Jamie Mansell meant the scores were level at two apiece at the end of the ninety minutes, but it was the home side who scored the vital goal in extra time. But it was a good season for the Jam Boys who finished sixth in the Premier Division, their highest placing at that level to date.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 40

WESSEX REPRESENTATIVE SIDE We’re going back some way in history again this week this time looking at the background concerning the Representative game, and some information has come to light. In 1988/89: The first reference to a Wessex Rep side I’ve found is when they played the Bournemouth FA in a game at Bashley- the game was scheduled for 22 March 1989 and resulted in a 3-1 win for our team. In 1989/90: The Wessex Rep side played the Sussex County League on Wednesday 29 November at Havant and secured a 1-1 draw. A second game that season saw the side draw with the Bournemouth FA at Grigg Lane on 6 February. My personal records say it was one each but two other sources indicate it was goalless. The third match of the season was against the Dan Air League at Cove was won 2-1 by our team on 18 April 1990. Dan Air was a sponsor’s name for the Combined Counties League. In 1990/91: On 30 October the Wessex Rep side played away to Fleet Town and this was a centenary match for our north friends. Fleet won 2-1 thanks to goals from Ross Larkin and Mark Frampton. More next week. On 21 November the Wessex League beat the Isle of Wight FA 2-0 at the Beatrice Avenue home of East Cowes Vics. Given the date, this may have been a trial game for the Island side and indeed some of our own team as 1991 saw the second running of the football competition in the “Island Games”; which in 1991 was hosted by Aland. There was a second match against the Dan Air team, this time at home at Bemerton on 22 January which ended goalless – this one for found its way into the Non-League Directory for 1992. There look to have been three other fixtures for that season: 19 February we hosted a South West Counties team at Eastleigh which saw our lads come through 2-1. The squad in the programme was 1 Nick Flower (Havant Town), 2 Paul Young (Brockenhurst), 3 Derek Dempsey (BAT), 4 Tommy Heffernan (Bournemouth), 5 John Wilson (Havant Town), 6 Mark Turner (Swanage Town & Herston), 7 Steve Richardson (Wimborne Town), 8 Paul Baxter (BAT), 9 Colin White (Brockenhurst), 10 Dave Perrett (AFC Lymington), 11 Pete Turrell (Swanage Town & Herston). One Kevin Dawtry was listed in the opposition, which seemed to include several other Wessex League players as well. Scorers for the team up to that time are recorded in said programme, six with one apiece- namely, Colin Burdle, Tommy Killick, Steve Richardson (Wimborne Town), Adie Miles (Bournemouth), Andy Price (BAT) and Martin Stickler (AFC Totton). If you’re still with me that could also reinforce the game on 6 February ending 0-0, but then that leaves the game in March 1989 unaccounted for! A fortnight later on 6 March there was a game against a Royal Navy side at Havant that sadly doesn’t seem to have been played. Looking like some sort of re-match from the previous season, we played the Bournemouth FA side again. This time at Hurn Bridge, Christchurch on 20 March but no result seems to have been recorded. In 1991/92: On an unknown date but circa 7 October we ventured east to play the Sussex County League at Portfield. The trip wasn’t great as the game ended with a 3-0 victory for the Sussex side. In a programme for this game, our starting eleven was: 1 Paul Brown; 2 Nigel Long; 3 Dave Fear; 4 Tim Packer; 5 Tony Gerard; 6 Nick Bridle; 7 Steve (Taffy) Richardson; 8 Mickey Farmiloe; 9 Kevin O'Leary; 10 Tom Killick; 11 Mark Brockway. Just the one substitute named, Gary Payne. It is not known if he came on during the course of the game.

Pictured left is the list of appearances as at 19 February 1991, that also appeared in the programme for that evening, this does seem to include substitute appearances as the number is not divisible by 11. The counting of sub appearances is reinforced by the fact that there are at least nine goalkeeper appearances- two from each of Steve Bailey, Martin Coffin and Wayne Shaw, one from Nick Flower, Iain Watson and Paul Bowers- all a bit confusing really. There might have been another game with the Isle Of Wight FA at some point. The last words (?): This story might run on, and my thanks to Steve Farmery and Ian Claxton for providing much of the background already. It would be greatly appreciated if anyone can add to the story. Please, do get in touch with the Editor. Thanks in advance.

Here’s a piece of Trivia for you, back in 1999 the Match Referee fee was £15.00 with £10.00 for each of the Assistants. Travelling expenses of no more than

£24.00 was allowed. A far cry from today

where the costs would be £140.00.

. Advance notice of our AGM. Full details will be announced soon, but for your Diary and at time of

writing- it’ll be at the Totton & Eling Sports Club, on SUNDAY 28 JUNE with a kick off of 10:00.

THE A TO Z OF THE WESSEX LEAGUE CLUBS IN MEMBERSHIP 1986-2020

Compiled by Gary Day and Mike Robins, it’s hoped you enjoy this series which will run whilst we await the resumption of our game and will conclude in pre-season if necessary. The ‘Tier’ system explained. The names of the divisions have changed over the years. Tier 1 is the present day Premier Division. CDE Tier 2 is the current Division One. Tier 3 lasted for just three seasons and was initially called Division CHRISTCHURCH 3 but had been renamed Division 2 in its final campaign. Year Formed 1885 Total Wessex Seasons 32 Joined Wessex From Hampshire League Tier One (currently Premier) 29 Duration in Wessex 1987 – date Tier Two (2004 - date) 3 Current Member Premier Division Tier Three (2004-2007) 0

Layout dictates that we’ll start this week with one from Gary’s archives when Christchurch won the Hampshire Intermediate Cup: Date: 13/05/1987 Hampshire Intermediate Cup – Final At: Jubilee Sports Ground

ALTON TOWN 0 CHRISTCHURCH (3) 5

Christchurch: Leonard; Haynes, Lewis; Snelling, Hayes, Matthews; Lynn (sub: Lacock 83), Hill, Gardner, Hull, Kearley (sub: Payne 83)

Notes: Alton had created a couple of chances, but it was Christchurch who took control with a blistering spell of three goals late in the first half (on 34, 40 and 43 minutes).

A fine pass through the middle by Lee Matthews caught out the Town defence and Mike Kearley fired low past Alton keeper Cook. The Alton defence was again caught on the hop and Dave Hull took the ball past Cook and slotted home. The two scorers combined for Church’s third goal when Hull got down the right and crossed for Kearley to send a deft header into the far corner.

Christchurch’s fourth goal came eight minutes into the second half when Graham Hill’s corner was headed in by Pete Gardner. Kearley completed his hat-trick late in the game, again getting clear of the Alton defence and a superb finish over the diving keeper to complete the 5-0 victory.

The match was played in a fine spirit throughout and the Alton lads took credit for their part despite the heavy defeat. The referee Mr J P McFaul and his supporting linesman also officiated well.

Extra Trivia: The featured game was at the end of the 1986/87 season and Christchurch were accepted into the Wessex League that summer. The club have been Wessex members since and therefore missed only the league’s inaugural season.

BTC (SOUTHAMPTON) (0) 1 CLANFIELD (0) 3 (after extra time; score at 90 minutes was 0-0)

Clanfield: Brutnell; Knight, Robb; Southgate, Manning, Pettit; Libby, Coleman (sub: Todd 66), Moore, Shepherd (sub: Hardcastle 97), Warton (sub: Martin 83)

Notes: This was some game from start to finish. The ninety minutes finished goalless but there was plenty of action with defences playing very well. The best chances in normal time was Clanfield’s Jay Shepherd beating the keeper and shooting but BTC’s Dave Grove did very well to clear off the line. Into the second half and Clan’s Roger Moore (who’d netted 40 goals in the season) also beat the keeper but Aj Lakhpuri covered well. Luke Pettit later hit the BTC post. Into extra time and a goal from Moore firing home and just under the bar. It was 2-0 in the opening minutes of the second half of the extra period and Moore did it again, heading in from a Dominic Hardcastle cross. Within two further minutes the Southampton side pulled a goal back when their substitute Martin Richardson, possibly with his first touch, took a free kick from the left that went straight into the far corner. A stamping incident occurred close to the end of extra time which led to a red card for Grove and up stepped Moore to send the keeper the wrong way to complete his hat-trick. Sadly, a very good game degenerated into a free for all between players after the final whistle at the end of extra time. A few other people charged on to the pitch to have ‘their say’ but the situation soon settled down and Clanfield were presented with the trophy shortly after.

Colden Common: Lang; Diaper, Davies; Hercock, Clarke, Hansford; Reed (sub: Salmon 63), Parker, Philpott, L Magee, Hodge. Subs (not used): C Magee, Osborne.

Notes: Both sides had been defeated in cup finals last time out and it would be easy to expect them to just play out a dull end of season affair. It didn’t quite work out like that!

Paulsgrove got proceedings off with a third minute goal when Steve Ledger was left a lot of time to shoot home. Common were soon level as, four minutes later, Steve Hercock’s free-kick was headed back across goal by Ben Clarke for Joe Hodge to sweep home at the back post. Liam Magee edged Common ahead, taking a Hodge cross on his chest, he fired home on the turn with 13 minutes played. Dave Philpott then provided the pass to Magee to score and make it 3-1 with 24 minutes on the clock. Common were flying now when Mitchell Parker’s fine pass from midfield enabled Philpott to score and make it 4-1 on 29 minutes. Ledger pulled a goal back close to half-time, a neat finish back across the keeper and in. So, six first half goals and 4-2 to Common.

Ledger completed his hat-trick for Grove with a 52nd minute shot that was well set-up by Tony Bichard. Next, on 56 minutes, the visitors made a full recovery when the troublesome Ledger was tripped in the box and up stepped James Crawford to make it 4-4 from the penalty spot. The goalmouth action continued with all sorts of close efforts but eventually, Common got their noses in front once again when Magee’s attempted shot looped up and fell to Hodge to head home his second goal of the game. Into the 89th minute of this match and it was Crawford’s shot from 20 yards that found the corner of the Common net to level the scores once more.

It was top drawer entertainment from start to finish. I’d never watched a game that had finished 5-5 before and haven’t had another one since! I’m still waiting for a 6-6 but that really is dreaming isn’t it?!

* denotes points adjustment It’s Gary’s archive time again and I must make up for that match under ‘B’, where Cowes didn’t feature too well. Add to that I wouldn’t want to upset those from the Island too much as Cowes was my hometown for the first two years (not that I knew much about it, of course). A tough task perhaps but try this one when they were pushing for a Wessex League place. Friday, 03 April 2020 Page 12 of 30

Notes: Now, I have no real love for horse racing but today was Grand National day. Yes, that day when practically anyone suddenly decides to understand the ‘Sport of Kings’ and bet in a long race containing a really big field with little chance of picking out the winner! But back to football… Cowes checked in to Winchester looking like a class act. They were boosted by the Young brothers – Paul and Dale – both now playing in defence (Dale was more renowned as a quality midfielder). In midfield there was the creative Jamie Lawrence who was briefly based on the Island but went on to play in the pro game, including for Sunderland and Bradford City as well as being capped for Jamaica. Up top, serial Island goal- getter Kim Hopcroft featured along with John Beard who always seemed to ‘do the business’ in games I’d watched. It was a wet afternoon at Abbotts Barton, which is City’s present-day ground but was a quite basic venue in respect to spectator facilities back then. Cowes moved the ball around like they meant business. It looked a matter of time before Cowes would go ahead and on 21 minutes Paul Young’s cross was mishandled by the City keeper and went ‘in-off’ Hopcroft’s head who was in the right place to net. Hopcroft turned provider on the break and Beard shot past the advancing keeper to put the visitors two goals to the good. The second half started well for Cowes as Hopcroft provided another goal, pulling the ball back from the right for Lawrence to score with a lunging close-range header on 46 minutes. Time for Hopcroft to register another goal for himself then, it soon came with good control to get past a home defender and place it past the exposed Whitcher in the City goal. It was only nine minutes into the second half and was looking like a tough afternoon for the home side. Beard added number five after 63 minutes, latching onto James McArthur’s long ball, he got clear on the left and shot home. There was a similar sixth goal, but this time Dougal Williamson supplied the pass and sub Marvin Tyldesley was left space on the left and netted to complete a comfortable win for the Yachtsmen (who later romped to the title and were Wessex League bound). Back to that Grand National race. Who put their money on Esha Ness, ridden by John White? You did well to pick out that 50/1 longshot, but matters didn’t quite turn out as they’d seemed. There was a false start and the race was ‘completed’ but John and his horse didn’t win as he’d thought. Now, who can name another year when the race wasn’t completed? But, hang on, in these times that question is a much too simple one to answer, isn’t it? Noted that, by pure coincidence, the race was meant to take place today (the day of this Newsletter issue - 4th April 2020). Footnote: My Aunt, in her nineties, is in a residential home not much more than a defensive clearance from Westwood Park and I make a point of visiting her when I am across, usually with Solent University FC. On the last trip back in December she noticed the badge on my coat, then looked me straight in the eye and, with a hint of rebuke in her tone, said: “Don’t forget where your roots are lad”! I looked straight back at her and replied: “If the game was against anyone else then I would be right behind the team”, which fortunately she just found acceptable.

This game was won comfortably by DC AFC. They took the lead on 16 minutes when a low Kevin Penfold cross was finished at the far post by Dave Marfleet. The home side’s other two goals came in the second half when, four minutes in, Penfold finished well. The win, which at that point, was already looking comfortable enough, was completed by Penfold following a good move down the left.

Subs (not used): C Baker, Hartley, Berry Notes: This was an interesting tussle between two sides that hadn’t made the best of starts to their league campaigns. FC Chippenham Youth were new to the Premier Division of the Wiltshire League whilst Downton were playing in Wessex League Division 1 following their summer relegation. Both sides struggled in the opening half-hour, but it was Youth who went ahead in the 33rd minute when Luke Holborough shot home, Robins keeper Glen Craven would have felt disappointed for allowing it through his fingers. It got worse for the Wessex side as a rare good move in the half produced a second goal for the home team when a forward missed a cross in the middle but it ran conveniently to Tom Jones who arrived on the green, green grass of his Stanley Park home to fire into goal at the far post (with apologies to those who’d detected the subtle pun!). So, 2-0 to Youth at the break. Downton approached the second half in higher spirits with Mark Daubney being put in on two occasions by Matt Baker passes but he was denied by Youth keeper Kelvin Page on each occasion.

But they did get a goal back when Baker crossed and Holborough netted with a diving near post header to get the dubious distinction of scoring at both ends. Youth held on into the final ten minutes, but their resistance was broken in the 82nd minute when Baker finished well high into the top corner. Stoppage time was interesting when Swindon official Mr Barnett decided Scott Donaldson had committed one petty niggle too many and produced his red card to leave Downton to play extra time a player short. It took the Robins only 17 seconds of extra time to edge in front when Baker used his strength to shrug off a defender and fire into the far corner. Three minutes later Page was adjudged to have fouled Baker and the Downton player completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot. They changed ends with Downton in a significant 4-2 lead and it became five when Baker, their star of the show, neatly back heeled the ball to set up Dave Pearce to net. As Youth struggled it was Downton who appeared to have the additional player as extra time elapsed, but Youth got one back right at the very end as Craven did well to block a Jones shot but Andy Churcher followed it home.

Notes: This excellent match possessed everything that’s good for the game of football – some fine all-out attacking play, a competitive spirit and ten goals too as East Cowes were looking a good bet to get back the Wessex League place they’d lost two seasons ago. It started at a cracking pace and this continued throughout an evenly matched first half. A mix-up between Poole’s Neil Wardle and keeper Paul Spillane resulted in a goal for Jamie Dyer. Poole soon levelled, an exquisite chip from the left by Jamie Holland that nestled into the far corner. Vics edged back in front when an inch-perfect Adam Robinson cross was headed firmly home by Mick Sherry. The scores were tied up again when five minutes before half-time a cross picked up a deflection which took it away from Vics keeper Paul Brenchley and Darren Elmes swept it home at the far post. Poole took charge of the early second half proceedings, the only time in the game that one side had a decent spell of pressure. Despite Vics coming close when the ball was cleared from the line, it was Poole that forged ahead for the only time in the game (and deservedly too) when Brenchley saved an effort by Chris Pratt but Mike McDonnell followed up to score. However, Vics forced their way back and Robinson found space and he shot low past the advancing Spillane; the ball was losing steam as it crept towards the goal, but it was completed by Liam Gearing. When Robinson was tripped by Spillane he got up and singed the keeper’s fingertips with the spot-kick to make it 4-3 on 79 minutes. But the goal glut hadn’t finished. The score soon became five for Vics and this one caused some controversy. It looked like a home player was obstructed on the left and Gearing’s free kick appeared to go straight into the net and a goal was given! Poole, having substituted their two best players (Holland and Matt Lovell) began to struggle but, in stoppage time they pulled it back to 5-4 when McDonnell’s shot came off the underside of the bar and sub Tony Avery was left a simple chance. Poole went gung-ho to try and snatch an equaliser, but it was cleared downfield and two Vics players were left in the clear and Greening, with Spillane bearing down on him, laid it across and Robinson was left a gaping net. It was the sort of match that you’d love to put in a bottle, cork it up and bring out on days you’d like to enjoy life, like a connoisseur does with a fine wine (or perhaps, in hindsight, when the football season and life in general has been disrupted by a virus!). Like that sommelier, when I open my file and find this game I immediately think “Yes, East Cowes 2002, a very good year”!! There might have been a losing team on the night, but it was the game of football that was an absolute winner.

Footnote: This was the second successive game that Vics had conceded four goals and won as they beat AFC Aldermaston 7-4 on the previous Saturday. Vics didn’t make it back to the Wessex that season, they were runners-up whilst Poole Town finished fifth.

Notes: This game got off to a strange start when Steyning’s Paul Walker, in trying to play the ball back to his keeper and under no pressure, sent it high over his own keeper and into the net. That goal came in the very first minute but the Steyning player made amends on ten minutes, scoring directly from a wind assisted corner. Eastleigh played with purpose and they eventually got a second goal on 33 minutes. It was a well-crafted effort too when Alfie Day nodded it back to Alan Lovell who crossed from the right and it went through to the far post and was headed in by Chris Sutton. It was soon 3-1 when Andy Groves took a corner on the left where John Kinnard, who was up from defence, nodded it on and Glen Judd netted with a firm shot at the back post. Like they did in the first half, Eastleigh scored in the opening minute of the second period when Paul Bishop’s cross was headed home by their skipper Derek Holloway. Eastleigh had to wait a while for their fifth goal when Lovell’s free kick picked out Gary Payne who rose majestically to head home. Eastleigh’s sixth goal came nine minutes from time with a further header and Holloway’s second of the evening from Bishop’s cross. NOTE:- In both divisions an asterisk [*] shows the only player for that team to have started in all their LEAGUE fixtures this season, six in the Premier Division and one in Division One, is it a coincidence that three are goalkeepers, Cameron Scott, Jack Martin and Karl Steinborn-Busse, with several others also leading starters with their respective club?

THE BATTLE FOR THE DIVISION ONE TITLE IN 2012-13 The season ended in Division One with every League Chairman and Fixture Secretary’s dream – the top two teams in the table playing each other on the final Saturday of the season with the League Title at stake, albeit with the odds slightly in favour of the home side. The two teams were BROCKENHURST and WHITCHURCH UNITED and what follows is a brief look, month by month, at how they reached that final day encounter. The Division had just sixteen Clubs that season meaning only thirty League matches per Club and perhaps because of that, August was devoted to the FA Cup and the League Cup, so it was September before the League matches got under way. SEPTEMBER All very neat with both Clubs playing four matches, two home and two away, and Brockenhurst set off like the proverbial steam train, winning all four and scoring twenty goals in the process, Darren Ritchie scored a hat trick in the opening day five nil defeat of Amesbury while Stockbridge went down six one at Grigg Lane. Whitchurch went one better on day one by scoring six without reply at home to Laverstock & Ford before a goalless draw at Fleet Spurs. The “Badgers” pressed on by scoring six at Hythe & Dibden and three at Laverstock while Whitchurch were rather de-railed when Team Solent scored five at Longmeadow without reply before picking themselves up with a three one win on the Island against East Cowes Vics. But September belonged to Brockenhurst. PL W D L F A PTS BROCKENHURST 4 4 0 0 20 1 12 WHITCHURCH UNITED 4 2 1 1 9 6 7 OCTOBER Again, by today’s standards not many matches played. Just seven involving the two Clubs, and the first meeting between the two in another month in which Brockenhurst held sway as Whitchurch lost at home to Pewsey Vale and away to Ringwood, failing to score in both matches, with their only success a three one win at US Portsmouth. Brockenhurst scored the only goal of the game at home to Team Solent before winning by the odd goal in three at Whitchurch - three very valuable points come the season’s end - and then losing at home for the first time, Petersfield winning 3-1. NOVEMBER The clocks changed and the League continued at a gentle pace with again just seven matches involving the two Clubs. Whitchurch had the benefit of three home games where they struggled for goals but collected seven points. Petersfield and Cowes were beaten two nil and one nil respectively with Tadley gaining a one all draw, but there were goals away from home with Amesbury beaten four one. Brockenhurst gained three points at home against Tadley (two one) and three more at Cowes (three one) but suffered only their second defeat when Pewsey scored three without reply in Wiltshire. PL W D L F A PTS BROCKENHURST 10 8 0 2 19 10 24 WHITCHURCH UNITED 12 6 2 4 21 14 20 DECEMBER One has to assume that this was a bad month in terms of the weather with both Clubs only playing twice and both winning twice without conceding a goal to leave the status quo unaltered. Brockenhurst scored three at home to US Portsmouth and then two at East Cowes whilst Whitchurch won by three at Stockbridge and claimed the only goal of the game at Laverstock & Ford PL W D L F A PTS BROCKENHURST 12 10 0 2 34 10 30 WHITCHURCH UNITED 14 8 2 4 25 14 26 JANUARY Into the New Year and again a shortage of games suggesting that the weather was again not being very cooperative with both Clubs only playing twice. Brockenhurst enjoyed two profitable journeys winning five four in a goalfest at Stockbridge and achieving a superb four nil win at Team Solent. Whitchurch won two nil on home soil against US Portsmouth but suffered a four nil defeat at Team Solent. In two games against the Students they had failed to score and conceded nine. PL W D L F A PTS BROCKENHURST 14 12 0 2 43 15 36 WHITCHURCH UNITED 16 9 2 5 29 18 29 FEBRUARY Normal service largely resumed with more fixtures and a lot of goals. At home Brockenhurst beat Ringwood 5-1 (Declan Edwards 3) and Cowes 2-0 whilst Whitchurch scored nine against Amesbury (Luke Walker and Sam Argent 3 each) but were held to a one all draw by near neighbours New Street. On the road it was success for the “Jamboys” with wins at Pewsey(2-1) and Petersfield (4-0) but not so rewarding away from the Forest for Brock with a goalless draw at Tadley and a 5-4 defeat at Petersfield – a double for the “Rams”. PL W D L F A PTS BROCKENHURST 18 14 1 3 52 21 43 WHITCHURCH UNITED 20 12 3 15 43 20 39 MARCH This was very much Whitchurch’s month with four wins in four games. Hythe & Dibden and Fleet Spurs at home and emphatic wins – 4-0 and 4-1 -at Cowes and New Street. Brockenhurst in turn played three games, all at home, winning against Pewsey Vale and Hythe (1-0 and 3-0) but going down to a single goal defeat to New Street. PL W D L F A PTS WHITCHURCH UNITED 24 16 3 5 56 22 51 BROCKENHURST 21 16 2 3 58 22 49 APRIL With the season scheduled to finish on the last Saturday of the month Brockenhurst had to cram nine games in to twenty six days including five in succession away from home. Those five away games saw wins at New Street, Fleet Spurs, Amesbury and US Portsmouth – 16 scored, none conceded – and a two all draw with Ringwood. US Portsmouth were beaten eight nil with a hat trick for Warren Kenna.

Whitchurch meanwhile had chalked up wins at Hythe & Dibden and Tadley and three comprehensive victories at home scoring eight, four and three against Stockbridge, East Cowes Vics and Ringwood Town and kept clean sheets in all three games. Sam Argent scored four times in each of the first two games. Brockenhurst did not fare so well on their own pitch, a five goal win over East Cowes and a single goal success against Laverstock coupled with a goalless draw with Fleet Spurs. All this meant that with one game to play Brockenhurst were assured of promotion and Whitchurch had a two point lead over third place Team Solent. Matters were then simplified when Solent played their final game on the Thursday and lost to Pewsey Vale thus assuring Whitchurch of promotion and the final game to decide the Champions, though it would need a big win by the visitors to deny Brockenhurst the Title. On a lovely sunny afternoon in something of a Carnival atmosphere with an attendance of 142, two Sam Argent goals gave the “Jamboys” victory on the day but left Brockenhurst as worthy champions as they returned to the Premier Division after a two year gap. Darren Ritchie, Mark Barker, Warren Kenna and Mike Spinney all reached double figures in terms of goals for Brock as did Paul Coventry and Luke Walker for Whitchurch, but it was Sam Argent’s 21 goals in seventeen matches in the second half of the season that saw Whitchurch home. CLUB NEWS

Sounds like there may be exciting times ahead at Fawley plans have been lodged with the New Forest District Council for redevelopment of the former Theatre and club buildings along the main A326. Where the current old club is, there will be a large car park with a public garden for all to use. In place of the current cabins, a new state of the art facility will be built IF approval is granted. It will comply with Southern League ground grading. The club extend their thanks to Esso for all their support and also to the board of the Holbury Community Sports Association and its chair Christopher Tona. The future is almost secured for the HCSA , for football, tennis, bowls and cricket with all four clubs working together. We wish them well.

Not that these mean much in the overall scheme of things, but nice to keep a record of how things stood before the world was hit by the Coronavirus; Covid-19. Hopefully we can get back to some form of normality in the coming months.
