NEW TWO YEAR DEAL WITH MJM SPORTS

MJM Sports have achieved a truly impressive deal with the Wessex Football League; a 2-year extension to our existing deal which has been running since 2017. This new agreement will now run until 2025. This is a fantastic result for us and a tremendous endorsement of the quality and consistency of service that we have been able to offer all our customers, including the prestigious Wessex Football League. They appreciate that MJM will continue to perform at the same level for them over the coming years. Despite the difficulties presented by the Covid 19 pandemic and Brexit, MJM have continued to operate throughout all the ups and downs of the last year and we are now looking forward to greater stability in the economy as life gradually returns to some degree of normality. MJM Sports will continue to be bench wear sponsors for the Wessex Football League together with Kappa, ball provider with Uhlsport and subs boards with MJM Sports. The Wessex Football League was the first to benefit from this type of sponsorship and Chairman of the League, Nick Spencer said “I am delighted that the league’s relationship with MJM has been extended until 2025. The support the league and our clubs receive from MJM and Kappa for The Respect programme is much valued. The excellent sponsorship of bench wear from MJM has given the league a more professional appearance, the significant financial benefit to our clubs is very much appreciated by them”. Terry Schofield Managing Director of MJM commented ‘It started with Kappa Respect 4 years ago and has gained respect, so much to say that the whole sponsorship from Respect to Balls to sub boards to Benchwear has been a natural progression and the clubs are as much of this as we are . I must say a few words about our team design, decoration and dispatch all help with the success of this deal, here’s to the next chapter’ Dave Bandell UK sales Manager commented “Kappa in conjunction with MJM sports are delighted to extend our relationship with the Wessex league. The new extension to 2025 on bench wear product highlights Kappa’s commitment and also proves what a great job MJM Sports have done implementing the deal. We look forward to working with both parties and continuing to build on an already successful partnership” MJM are Barnstaple based and are now the largest independent supplier of team kits in the Southwest. We have been trading for over 20 years and offer a comprehensive service for all sports, including soccer clubs, where we offer everything from bench wear to full team strips, training wear, to balls and boards and much more. We have outstanding facilities at our new premises, where we offer a design service for those clubs that need it, together with, embroidery for club logo etc and printing player details on shirts.

QUIZ TIME

The answers to the following ten questions each comprise of a Christian name and surname. Having answered the questions take the first letter of each surname and re-arrange them into the name of a ground that has staged Wessex League Football. Answers on the last page.

1. Refereed this season’s FA Cup Final and has a tenuous connection with the Wessex League. 2. Started 297 games for Saints between 2008 and 2014 scoring 106 goals. Surprisingly to many he was capped by England and then subsequently transferred to Liverpool - a move that emphatically failed to work out. 3. Central defender who made in excess of 500 appearances for Arsenal and won 66 caps for England, fitting in an HM prison stay along the line. 4. 148 appearances for Arsenal Ladies and nearly as many for England. Has appeared on “Strictly Come Dancing” and is a regular on TV. 5. Southampton born defender who made over 200 appearances for Spurs winning two FA Cup Winners medals and one in the EUFA Cup between 1980 and 1986 6. The Manager who succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford. 7. Striker who won 89 Caps for England and scored 118 goals for Liverpool between 1996 and 2004. Rather fond of horse racing. – 23 October 8. Transferred from Hamburg to Southampton in 1980. 9. Chairman of Southampton from the mid 1980’s to 2006 and oversaw the move to St Marys. Has been an MEP since 2019. 10. Son of a long serving West Ham Manager, played for Saints and Bournemouth but perhaps best known for his managerial association with Harry Redknapp.

CLUB NEWS

There’s been a new Management team appointed at Hurn Bridge. Ben Hatch is the new Christchurch Manager; he’ll be assisted by Barney Gritt with James Rowe and Ryan Thorpe in coaching roles. Ollie Lovell is another player to sign for an American University- Ashlands. The Eagles are based in Ohio and we wish the former Hamble Club player (who made 12 starts in 2020/21) all the best on his career path.

Signings can be made on the standard Registration forms but cannot be registered until the Whole Game System is rolled over for 2021/22, but with many teams announcing their signings ahead of the new campaign, please note that clubs need to be reminded about obtaining International Clearance if ANY player they are signing played outside this country in the season just finished or indeed earlier if he has not played here since then. This includes if they have played in Wales or Scotland for example. Clubs have fallen foul of this and unfortunately been removed from FA competitions through this oversight. In our competitions a similar fate would happen, please take note. Saturday, 05 June 2021 Page 4 of 9

LOOKING AT VERWOOD TOWN

Verwood Town Football Club was formed around 1905 and affiliated to the County FA. They played local football for many years which meant, according to their own history, “travelling in and around Dorset by Steam Train and changing behind walls and hedgerows proved conclusive to good team spirit and offered a different slant to country life.”. They had played at the local Recreation Ground since time immemorial before moving to their present Potterne Park base in 1986, a move which was followed by League Football for the first time in 1989. In their first season at that level the Club finished fourth in Division Two behind Whitchurch United, Fleetlands and West Wight and ahead of such as New Milton, Ringwood and Winchester City. Three years later they finished in third place behind Portsmouth Civil Service and Andover New Street and were promoted to Division One. They remained in that Division until 2003/04 apart from three seasons back in Division Two and were runners up to Hayling United in 2002/03, finishing ahead of current Wessex League sides Tadley Calleva, Portchester and Alresford as well as a team called Fareham Sacred Hearts who, I am afraid, stir very little in the memory as far as the writer is concerned. In 2004/05 they were founder members of the Wessex League Division Three and in 2006/07 reached Division One before achieving major success in 2011/12 when they gained promotion for the first time, finishing four points clear of Portchester. In 2016/17 they suffered relegation back to Division One but they are settled and valued members of the League and have improved the facilities immensely at Potterne Park during their tenure, with further improvements in the pipeline or possibly underway if the problems of the last two years have not delayed same. The Club has entered the FA Cup since 2010/11 but, as has been said before, it is an unforgiving competition for Clubs at this level and they have rarely escaped the Preliminary Rounds, They initially entered the FA Vase a year earlier and they have enjoyed some success, twice reaching the Third Round Proper. In 2010/11 they were victorious at Western League Welton Rovers and, more locally, at Hamworthy United and then defeated Budleigh Salterton (then in the South West Peninsula League) and further Western League opposition in Keynsham at home, before bowing out to another side from the South West Peninsula League, Torpoint Athletic at Potterne Park. In 2014/15 they played one game less to reach the same stage in what was a “goal-filled” run, The first three ties were all at home commencing with Western League Roman Glass St. George. After 90 minutes the scores were level at four apiece before two goals from Billy Lowes in extra time saw the Potters through, Fareham Town were defeated 2-0 before another goalfest saw South West Peninsula side Plymouth Parkway – who will be in the Southern League next season - beaten 5-4. There were more goals in the next round but sadly at the wrong end. The draw sent them on a three hundred mile plus round trip to St. Austell, again members of the South West Peninsula League. The Cornish Club’s Officials and spectators had endeared themselves to very few in the previous Round at Follands and it was an unpleasant afternoon all round for Verwood as they went down 6-1 in a rather hostile atmosphere. St Austell went on to reach the last four where they were defeated by Glossop Town. The last five seasons have seen Verwood meet only Wessex League opposition in the Competition with the FA now tending to restrict the travel in the early rounds. Always a nice Club to visit with a friendly welcome assured and valued members of the Wessex League. We wish them well in the coming season and for the future generally.

PRE-SEASON FRIENDLIES

It would be expected that this list will grow from week to week, so please do get in touch- contact me by email at [email protected] to get your games added. The list is now over 100 and still growing almost daily. As this season was extended into June due to the start stop season and lack of football during lockdown, HAMPSHIRE County FA are happy that for this season only friendlies can take place in June but clubs involved still need permission from their member league. Presumably a similar relaxation of the Saturday, 05 June 2021 Page 5 of 9

restriction is in place elsewhere, but we would strongly advise clubs to enquire locally before making arrangements. Please contact us so we can promote your games and advise of clubs from outside our area looking for similar arrangements. Please do NOT forget that the HOST team also MUST obtain sanction from their County FA before the game is played. Games are subject to change at little or no notice. In the summary below, [*] indicates a neutral venue for this game. At time of writing we understand that the first games in the 2021/22 FA Cup will be on Saturday 7 August, so subject to confirmation- we shall have a round of League fixtures prior to that weekend. Pre-season fixtures and tournaments are listed IN GOOD FAITH, but please note that the League have no control over the proposed schedules. Spectators are strongly recommended to check nearer the time if making a special journey. NOTES from below- [1] – Steve Moore Cup, [2] – Salisbury Hospitals Cup
