Blu Boam grabbed a consolation for Baffins deep into added on time at the end, with the last kick of the match. Chelsea completed a 5th Premiership title (six overall) winning season but were thwarted in their attempts to win the FA Cup going down by the odd goal in three against Arsenal. Harry Kane was the leading scorer in the top flight with 29 goals. South Shields completed a 4-0 win over Cleethorpes Town in the FA Vase this season. Since then no Northern League side has picked up the Vase after an extraordinary run of eight victories from nine appearances at Wembley and were runners up in the shape of Stockton in 2018. The Northern League have accounted for 10 victories and are way ahead of the pack as to wins. The North West Counties and Western leagues each have four title winners with ourselves, the Northern Counties East, West Midlands Regional and Isthmian leagues have three.

THE CITIZENS POST WCFC v Eastleigh FC Saturday 28th July 2018 Pre-Season Friendly Winchester City Football Club is a committee run members club and as such is an unincorporated association. THE CITIZENS POST TODAY’S VISITORS – EASTLEIGH FC CLUB HISTORY Playing home matches firstly on Southampton Common, and then at ‘Westfield’ in Swaythling, the new club were promoted into the Hampshire League in 1950 after two campaigns spent in the Southampton Senior League (West). Within another year, Athletic, (that appellation was dropped in 1973) had topped Division Three (West) and won the Hampshire Intermediate Cup. By 1956, Swaythling were playing in the 1st Division of the County league. They would return to that level in 1970 as champions of Division 2. In keeping with their early progress, the club moved to a new ground at Ten Acres in 1957 – which remains home to this day. The change to their current name was made in 1980, six years before Eastleigh F.C. became founder members of the Wessex League. The club settled at that level, until a distinguished period under the management of present Sutton United boss Paul Doswell which began in 2002/2003. Eastleigh were that season’s Wessex League Champions. Twelve months later, they finished 4th in the Southern Football League Division One East. The club were beneficiaries of the F.A.’s restructuring of the non-league pyramid, and were elevated to begin 2004/2005 in the Premier Division of the Isthmian League. On-pitch advancement was being matched off the field. A new stand was constructed in time for the Isthmian campaign, which the team finished with a run of 14 unbeaten matches.

Stones were hoping to continue in the same vein as their mid-week performance against Burton Park Wanderers, but the plans were left in the changing room. From the off it was the visitors pushing forward, Stones’ defence held firm and Dalton certainly proved himself in goal. When Stones did break out of their half the impetus and finish was lacking and the visitors re-applied the pressure on the home defence. A 3-minute flurry on the half-hour saw Stones’ defence undone when an ill judged back pass failed to find Dalton and instead went to the feet of a visiting striker, who made no mistake planting the ball in the net, then Stones conceded a free kick just outside their box, the ball was flighted in, missed by the defence and hammered in at the far post. After the break Stones emerged and tried to regain control of the tie, but the visitors shut up shop at the back and what chances Stones engineered were either soundly dealt with, wide or hit the bar.

The first trace of the Ironworks was recorded in 1891, the local press reported them beating Stamford Town Reserves 1-0. By the 1892-93 season the Ironworks were the best team around, dislodging the longer established Town, but in the summer of 1894 the clubs merged. The Great War was almost over by the time the next Blackstones Club emerged, joining the Peterborough League in 1918 winning the championship that season. However, the club’s success, indeed its life was short-lived withdrawing from league the following season. 1921 the club re-emerged under a new name Rutland Engineering Works. The Peterborough League of the twenties was formida- ble with the likes of Spalding, Bourne and Yaxley. The club opted for more local competitions, in 1929-30 they lined up in both the Stam- ford Amateur and Deepings Leagues.
