The 31st League Cup Final saw Sholing win it for the second time with a 2-1 win over Baffins Milton Rovers. Goals for the Boatmen coming from Byron Mason on 14 minutes and Dan Mason seven minutes after the start of the second period. Blu Boam grabbed a consolation for Baffins deep into added on time at the end, with the last kick of the match. Chelsea completed a 5th Premiership title (six overall) winning season but were thwarted in their attempts to win the FA Cup going down by the odd goal in three against Arsenal. Harry Kane was the leading scorer in the top flight with 29 goals. South Shields completed a 4-0 win over Cleethorpes Town in the FA Vase this season. Since then no Northern League side has picked up the Vase after an extraordinary run of eight victories from nine appearances at Wembley and were runners up in the shape of Stockton in 2018. The Northern League have accounted for 10 victories and are way ahead of the pack as to wins. The North West Counties and Western leagues each have four title winners with ourselves, the Northern Counties East, Regional and Isthmian leagues have three. The much debated Brexit Article 50 was invoked this year and the whole saga still rumbles on. Rather appropriate perhaps, that Dunkirk was one of the films of the year. Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” was a hot tune in 2017. In local county FA competitions, the trophies were distributed as follows- Senior Cup, Weymouth 1-0 Gillingham Town Senior Cup, Town 0-0 AFC Bournemouth Wiltshire Senior Cup, Swindon Supermarine 2-1 Highworth Town Russell-Cotes Cup, AFC Portchester 2-2 Bemerton Heath Harlequins The Terras needed extra time to see off a plucky Gills outfit to win the Dorset Senior cup at Dorchester, a Stephane Zubar header with six minutes left of extra time sealing a second win over the North Dorset side in consecutive seasons, whilst Basingstoke eventually came good with a best of 13 penalty shoot-out victory at St Marys over the Cherries youngsters. In the Russell-Cotes Cup we were treated to an all-Wessex contest that’s saw Portchester and Bemerton share four goals at the home of Town before the Hampshire side won 7-6 on penalties, the game being played on 3 May.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS /21 EDITION NUMBER 09

The last of our series that has looked at every fifth season of the Wessex League since its inception in 1986- 87 and we are close to the current day as we review the 2016-17 season. The Premier Division consisted of 22 Clubs, an increase of one over the previous season. Salisbury had been promoted to the Southern League and Folland Sports relegated to Division One with Bashley, Portland United and Amesbury Town taking their places. Bashley were relegated from the Southern League after a couple of traumatic seasons whilst Portland and Amesbury came up from Division One. With little time having since passed just four of the Clubs in the final table are no longer with the League. Moneyfields, Sholing and Blackfield & Langley have moved up the pyramid – though the last named are returning to us for the coming season – whilst Team Solent have recently withdrawn. There was in some ways an unsatisfactory end to the season which could have been avoided. Moneyfields were charged, initially by the Hampshire FA and then by the League for fielding a player under suspension during one of the games over the Christmas Period. It took a long time for the County FA to deal with the case and Moneyfields, as was their right, appealed to the FA against the points deduction. Despite pleas from all parties for the matter to be resolved as quickly as possible the season had finished before the FA heard the case and upheld the original decision leaving the Table unaltered, though the Portsmouth based Club did gain promotion to the Southern League with Portland not having applied for same. Portland and Moneyfields finished well ahead at the top of the table, a remarkable achievement by the Champions who had won Division One the previous season, and produced an incredible run of results after Christmas to take the Crown and make it four Championships in five years – two in the Dorset and two in the Wessex League – and in the year they missed out they were runners up in the DPL. They were also the only two Clubs to top the one hundred goal mark in the League though the bottom three reached that figure in the goals against column. The fact that Portland were “chased” home by Moneyfields, Sholing and Blackfield only adds to their achievement seeing as to what those Clubs have achieved in the subsequent seasons. The other figure that perhaps stands out in the Table is Newport drawing seventeen matches – forty per cent of their games played – and just winning a few of those would have seen their final position much improved. The League Cup went to Sholing with a 2-1 victory over Division One side Baffins Milton Rovers at AFC Portchester’s ground. Neither of the two main protagonists as regards the League Title progressed very far in the Competition and both went out on penalties. Moneyfields at Lymington at the first hurdle and Portland at home to Team Solent in December. Overall, despite Moneyfields’ promotion and, as we’ll discover shortly, Team Solent’s Cup exploits, as far as the Premier Division was concerned it was Portland’s year. To come up from Division One and win the Premier Division at the first attempt was a remarkable achievement and delight for a well-run and extremely friendly Club. In the FA Cup no fewer than 15 Clubs advanced from the Extra Preliminary Round with only five all-Wessex ties, a lower figure than usual. Andover Town and Team Solent overcame Hellenic League opposition in the shape of Royal Wootton Bassett and Lydney Town -Solent defeating the latter 6-0 in Gloucestershire - while the remaining victories were over Western League sides with the best result being Alresford’s win at Bridport. Seven of these were successful again in the Preliminary Round with four all-Wessex ties and Alresford again taking the plaudits with a single goal replay win over Southern League Wimborne Town. The First Qualifying Round rather reduced the numbers with only two Clubs proceeding further. One of those bowing out, Moneyfields, suffered one of the worse defeats in their history when going down 9-0 at Chippenham. AFC Portchester made the 330-mile round trip to Bideford and came home with a 2-1 victory while Alresford defeated League rivals Fareham Town. But the Second Qualifying Round proved the end of the road for both Clubs with Alresford losing 3-1 to Cadbury Heath from the Western League and Portchester finding Southern League Merthyr Tydfil too strong.

PO POSTCODE POP-UP

A look at the three teams on the eastern edge of our area, within the PO postcode area, and how they match against other in the five years from 2014 to 2019 when they all plied their trade in our top tier. There always has to be a winner and by the very nature of the beast a loser as well, and I’ll get my apologies in to that team straight away. Over the five years though there has been a fairly standard pattern, with one club in particular having the best of times against their nearest (and dearest?). All will be revealed…..

This was the third season in the Division for Portchester and perhaps fittingly saw them earn a 3rd placed finish. No doubt boosted by doing the double over both their neighbours. Highlight for them being the 7-2 win at Fiveheads on 20 January, when Luke Sweeney led the way home with a hat trick ably assisted by Alex Baldacchino with a double from a bench start and singletons from Sammy Igoe and Andy Rinomhota. Robbie Pittman and Harry Potter were on target for the hosts that day. Fareham found no comfort at home losing both at Cams and on the road although the home games were less disappointing than on the road. Bradey Norton scoring in the Portchester game and Simon Woods against Horndean.

Moving on a year again Fareham found themselves on the wrong end of the local results with the 5-1 home reverse at the hands of Horndean perhaps the hardest to take. Bradey Norton was the Creeksiders scorer on the day but Dan Hayes grabbed a hat trick with other goals from Mark Smith and Robbie Tambling to bag the points. Horndean ended with a 5th place just two points clear of Portchester. The best of five win at Fiveheads helping the cause. Jack Maloney, Sam Smart and Lee Tigwell with the goals with Tom Cain and Jason Parish replying for Portchester. Fareham grabbed a point in the goalless game at Wicor, and this feat was achieved again in 2018/19 and were the only goalless games involving the three teams in the period covered.

A relatively close run thing between our three teams this season, with just Portchester managing to take bragging rights with a win double over Fareham. The Creeksiders finally bagged a win over one of their rivals, a 1-0 at Fiveheads Park, where Matt Andrews was on target in the game on 9 August. The ‘Deans gaining revenge in the reverse fixture though with a 4-2 win.

Horndean did the double over AFC Portchester scoring three without reply overall, whilst Fareham’s two wins both came on their travels. Scott Hamilton gave Fareham an early Christmas present with the only goal of the game against Portchester while in the odd goal in five win in March, Gary Austin, Curt Robbins and Ash Tattersall earned them the points.

The final season under review was dominated by our representatives from the far south east, Horndean- scoring twenty and just conceding four is a good return on a season, 12 coming at home with six against both Fareham and Portchester. The home win over the latter coming in the chill of mid-January with Alfie Lis bagging a brace and Sean McMonagle going one better, Jack Maloney was also on the scoresheet that day. In April it was the turn of Fareham to get hit for six, McMonagle again with a hat trick doing the damage. Harry Jackson weighed in with a pair and Mark Smith was also on target. Andrea Carrera with a consolation effort for the Creeksiders. For only the second time in the period covered by this story, we had a goalless draw and again it was at Wicor when Fareham were the visitors, and it was another share of the spoils at Cams when they shared four goals in February. Curt Robbins and Simon Woods for the hosts and a brace for the visitors through Steve Ramsey. The overall table looks like this with the final column being the average rank for each of the three.

NEXT STOP – SCOTLAND

A long way back in time and a long way north for that matter for this week’s Programme piece and it is another of the few Programmes I have left from my days of watching Southampton writes John Gorman. Not quite so far north as the Rangers match featured recently, with a halt being called this time at Carlisle, just this side of the Scottish Border. The League Cup has had a variety of names and sponsors over the years and in 1983/84 was known as the Milk Cup. Saints had a bye in the First Round and faced a home and away tie with Carlisle, some 350 miles north, in Round Two which the Cumbrians also reached by means of a bye. At the time Southampton were in Division One – this was pre-Premiership days - and Carlisle in Division Two along with such as Manchester City, Chelsea, Newcastle, Brighton, Crystal Palace, Leeds and Portsmouth. In all honesty I can recall little about the game other than how cold and bleak it was on the open terracing at Brunton Park, and until I looked it up was convinced it had been a goalless draw. In fact, the game ended 2-0 in Carlisle’s favour so no doubt Saints produced their usual away performance on long journeys and rarely threatened the opposing goal. Both of the home goals were scored by Malcolm Poskett who memory suggests also played for Newcastle and was also in good form – he had scored four the previous weekend against Oxford United. Poskett actually played for a number of Clubs in the north of the Country as well as Brighton and Watford and made nearly 200 appearances for Carlisle in two spells – but did NOT play for Newcastle. Memory! The only other names in the Carlisle line up that register now are Alan Shoulder, who did play for Newcastle, and Mick McCartney who had two spells at Brunton Park playing for Plymouth Argyle and Saints in between times. Saints, in contrast, fielded Peter Shilton. Mick Mills, Steve Williams, Mark Wright, Nick Holmes and Frank Worthington among others – and still lost. In the second leg at the Dell came off the bench to replace and scored twice following David Armstrong’s opener to send the home side through to Round Three. Carlisle were managed at the time by Bob Stokoe and finished in seventh place in the table behind Champions Chelsea. Southampton had what I think still remains their best ever placing in the top flight, finishing three points behind Liverpool as runners up in Division One. They did however lose at Rotherham in the Third Round of the League Cup. I stayed overnight in Carlisle and travelled back the next day and was stopped by some sort of traffic census somewhere near Slough. I was asked where I was going and where I had come from, dutifully answered Godalming and Carlisle, and was then asked if I did that journey every day. It is called sticking to the script!

Pagham v FLEET TOWN PORTLAND UNITED v Clevedon Town SHAFTESBURY v FAWLEY AFC TADLEY CALLEVA v ALRESFORD TOWN

Seven all-Wessex ties, perhaps fewer than expected as there were thoughts that with the current situation the draw may have been heavily regionalised to minimise travel and expense. The pick of the seven is the clash between near neighbours and rivals BROCKENHURST and LYMINGTON. They last met in the Competition, and it may be the only time, in 2011/12 when the “Badgers” won 2-1 on their own soil after a one all draw at the Sports Ground. Similarly well acquainted with each other are BAFFINS MILTON ROVERS and AFC STONEHAM, whose career paths have been very similar and it would be a brave person to predict the outcome of that tie. Premier Division versus Division One in Four ties – BASHLEY v WHITCHURCH, COWES SPORTS v TOTTON & ELING, SHAFTESBURY v FAWLEY AFC and BEMERTON HEATH v HORNDEAN. Whitchurch are improving both on and off the field but Bashley are strong at home and Cowes should have the upper hand over The Millers. Shaftesbury and Fawley both suffer from unpredictability or inconsistency and both will be looking at the next round. Bemerton were favourites for the Division One crown last season and are probably in pole position this time while Horndean are always a top six Club. Could be a very good afternoon at Western Way. Just one all-Premier tie and that is In the north of the County where TADLEY host ALRESFORD. The home side have lost some players in the close season whilst the set up on and off the field has greatly changed at Alresford and they are something of an unknown quantity, but home advantage may prevail. Ties against Clubs from other Leagues are usually dominated by meetings with the Western League but there are only two this time round. HAMWORTHY UNITED welcome Calne Town to the County Ground with the visitors in pole place for promotion to the Western Premier when last season was abandoned. PORTLAND UNITED also have home advantage with the visit of Clevedon Town who were mid table in the Western Premier. Clevedon is on the Severn Estuary some eleven miles from Bristol and when the two Clubs met at the same stage in 2018 Portland triumphed by the odd goal in three in Somerset. Rather than the Western League it is the Combined Counties League that provides the greatest opposition, featuring in five ties. AMESBURY TOWN have a potentially difficult trip to Badshot Lea who play at Wrecclesham, near Farnham and have proved difficult to beat there. BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY return to Camberley with the two having met a couple of seasons ago, playing out an eminently forgettable goalless draw at Krooner Park before the Surrey side snatched a very late winner on the Waterside. A couple of miles away FAREHAM TOWN will face Frimley Green in a rematch of the 2018-19 tie at Cams Alders which Frimley won by the odd goal in three. Home advantage should help AFC PORTCHESTER in their meeting with Sandhurst Town who are in Division One of the Combined Counties, while CHRISTCHURCH face doughty opponents at Hurn Bridge in the form of Ascot United. The side, with their home inside the confines of the Racecourse, were leading the table at the time of cessation last season and have been a thorn in the side of a number of Wessex Clubs in recent years. Three ties left and something of a rarity with a meeting with a side from the Southern Combination, formerly the Sussex League, as FLEET TOWN travel to the coast to meet Pagham, just a couple of miles from Bognor Regis. Pagham finished in the lower half of the table last season but have been one of the stalwarts of Sussex football for many seasons. HAMBLE CLUB face Hellenic League opponents in Reading City who finished very much in the lower reaches of the table last season and, one suspects, will have to improve to get a result in a game that has been switched to Romsey’s Bypass Ground due to some remedial work at the Community Centre, while BOURNEMOUTH have not been dealt a good hand by the draw. Unusually a number of Step Four Clubs were included at this early stage and The Poppies face a tie at Southern League Basingstoke. The Hampshire Club played at Winchester last season but are hoping to play at the Winklebury Complex in the town in the coming campaign, though it is understood that this game will be played at the Rivermoor Stadium home of Reading City. Good luck to all, whenever the ties are played.

BROCKENHURST’S FA VASE ODYSSEY

PART TWO- Having fallen at the first hurdle in the Millennium year, Brockenhurst’s Vase fortunes improved greatly in season 2000/01 as they reached the Fourth Round of the Competition. The now customary regionalisation was not in evidence as the First Qualifying Round saw a visit from Chatham Town from Kent and a 3-1 win, the quality of which was enhanced when the visitors were crowned Champions of the Kent League at the end of the season. Next up was a trip to Moneyfields and victory by the odd goal in three before Didcot travelled down to Grigg Lane and were beaten 4-3 in a closely fought encounter. Western League Paulton Rovers were the next to enter the Forest and another close fought tie ended 3-2 in Brock’s favour. The third Round saw a trip to and Biggleswade Town from the Spartan South Midlands League and a highly creditable five two victory. Five goals away from home at that stage of the Competition is impressive. The game was played at Fairfax which Biggleswade have since left for a more modern stadium writes Mark Hilton. The weather had been poor and the Badgers hadn’t played for three weeks. The Biggleswade ground hadn’t had a game called off for several years and it looked like Brock might be the only side to get their tie played. Brockenhurst made much of the early running and Ben Thomson hit the inside of the post. It was the mid-table Spartan South Midlands Premier side who stole the lead through Warren Grieve on 11 minutes in front of a crowd of 101. Two quick goals put Brockenhurst in front, teenager Richard Cort on 22 minutes and Phil Stone two minutes later. Another two quick goals just before half time meaning Brockenhurst killed off the tie. First Mark Jones on 42 minutes and a minute later what was described as a rare Phil Stone header. A trademark solo goal from Ben Thomson made it 5-1 on 75 minutes before Mark Carter thumped home a 25 yarder for Biggleswade. Badgers keeper Andy Colverson, in for the cup tied Jamie Frank, pulled off a great one handed penalty save in the 89th minute from host skipper Mark Winwood.

The Fourth Round however was the end of the line as Southern League South and West side Taunton Town proved too strong as they overcame Brockenhurst’s home advantage to win 4-1. Their strength was confirmed by going on to win the Vase and also gain promotion at the season’s end. Only three games in Season 2001/02 but a lot of goals. A four all home draw with Combined Counties side Sandhurst Town was followed by a best of three goals win in the replay before a trip to Croydon Athletic ended in a five two defeat. 2002/03 started with a rare trip to Sussex and a comfortable 5-2 win over Hailsham Town from the Sussex County League. Closer to home, and at home, Bemerton Heath were beaten by a single goal before a rather embarrassing defeat at the hands of Winchester City. They were still in the and were Champions at the season’s end but a 7-0 loss at home was surely never in the script. The following season saw an early exit with Hillingdon Borough from the Spartan South Midlands League winning 3-2 in Middlesex and it was “unknown” opposition in 2004/05 as well. Firstly, a journey to Westfield from the Combined Counties League, whose ground is a decent goal kick away from Woking’s Kingfield stadium, before a three-goal home defeat at the hands of Thamesmead Town from South East London ended the season’s Vase interest. Thamesmead went on to finish runners up in the Kent League. 2005/06 saw the Fourth Round reached again with a variety of opposition encountered en route. A trip to Combined Counties Chipstead, some five miles from Epsom, saw a 2-1 victory and a home tie with Abingdon United from the Hellenic League finished with the same score line. Surrey, again, and the Isthmian League Saturday, 29 August 2020 Page 14 of 25

were next with four goals shared at home with Egham before a single goal was enough to win the replay. The well-worn path to Bournemouth was followed for a best of three goal victory over the Poppies before the run ended at Grigg Lane at the hands of Bury Town from . They were to finish as runners up in the and scored twice to ensure their progression to Round Five. The curse of the Western League which affects all Wessex Clubs year by year struck the following season with a 2-0 home defeat by Sherborne Town on entry to the Competition in Round Two. Better fortune in 2007/08 with victory over a Western League Club – 1-0 at Devizes – followed by an away tie at Holmer Green from the Spartan South Midland League. Holmer Green is near High Wycombe and a comfortable 4-0 win was rewarded with a home tie with Crawley Down from Sussex. They played at a level one step lower and four goals again ensured victory, this time with one conceded in reply but it was the Western League that had the last word with a 3-1 defeat at Bitton on the outskirts of Bristol. Just one game in 2008/09 and a 2-1 loss on the wide-open spaces of Milton United from the Hellenic League and the other side of the A34 from Didcot. 2009/10 started with local opposition and away wins at Bournemouth and Laverstock & Ford, both by two goals to one, before the opposition became anything but local. South Western Peninsula side Tavistock made the near 300 mile round trip to the Forest and lost 3-1 before a 230 mile round trip for Brockenhurst ended in a defeat by the same score at Western League Dawlish Town. Two matches in 2010/11 both finishing four one. Sussex side Crowborough were defeated at home but Molesey from the Combined Counties proved too strong in Surrey. Then followed something of a poor spell with defeat at Blackfield & Langley after a win at Cove, a 3-0 defeat at Cowes, a 5-0 win over Hayling cancelled out by a 2-0 loss to former Wessex Club Warminster Town, a 4-0 defeat at Moneyfields and a best of seven goal exit at Bournemouth; just two wins in five seasons. 2016/17 saw a 5-0 win over Ringwood helped by a Will Tickle hat trick before another loss to Bournemouth, this time 3-1 but 2017/18 was more interesting. The First Qualifying Round saw a 5-4 extra time win at Shaftesbury – a hat trick for Mitch Speechley Price – and five more goals at home to Godalming with another hat trick from the same player. South West Peninsula side Crediton made the long trip to Hampshire and went down to an extra time goal from Dammy Bada before the run ended in another goal fest with Hamble Club coming out on top by five goals to four. Two seasons left and 2018/19 saw an away victory at United Services Portsmouth and honours even with the Western League – a 3-1 win at Longwell Green near Bristol and a 4-0 loss at Bradford Town, a Club with a quality Vase record. And so to the truncated season of 2019/20 which started with a 4-0 win in Wiltshire over Laverstock & Ford – a name that has cropped up frequently of late – and then a 3-2 win at the delightful home of Hellenic League Bishops Cleeve, virtually on the edge of Cheltenham Racecourse. Exit came at the hand of Plymouth Parkway, perhaps the best side to visit Grigg Lane over recent years. Forty-seven seasons in the Vase – an achievement of which the Club can be proud. 108 matches, 51 victories, 47 losses and 10 draws while 78 different Clubs have provided the opposition, and entry 48 is imminent.

THE FA CUP, THE WESSEX LEAGUE AND DAYS GONE BY

One of the joys of the FA Cup is the chance to meet teams you would not normally play and travel to places you would not normally go, though the FA’s over-regionalisation of the draw means that chances of such meetings and journeys are now reduced. A look back over the years does throw up some interesting ties for some of our now Premier division clubs. In 2013/14 AFC PORTCHESTER recorded three victories, including a 5-0 defeat of near neighbours Horndean, and travelled to Cirencester in the Second Qualifying Round. The Gloucestershire side topped the Southern League South and West at the end of the season and Portchester were by no means disgraced by a 2-0 defeat at the well-appointed Corinium Stadium. Two games from ALRESFORD’s file, both in the Extra Preliminary Round. In 2008/09 they travelled to the Forest of Dean to meet Harrow Hill, then in the Hellenic Premier Division, and lost 4-1. The Gloucestershire side have since dropped down to County Football. Two years later Herne Bay were the opposition at Arlebury, having made the 230 mile round trip from Kent. They went on to top the Kent League at the end of the season and, on the day, returned home with a best of five goal victory.

With regard to BASHLEY we go back to their Southern League days and a seeming affinity with Wales. In 1990 they travelled to Barry Town, 160 miles each way and recorded a 2-0 win over their Southern League Midland Division hosts with the game no doubt played at Jenner Park, a rather soulless stadium with the pitch inside an eight lane running track and the spectators some way from the action. Bashley went out in a replay at Weymouth in the next round. 1994/95 saw the Club’s best ever run in the Competition with replay victories over Town teams from Havant, Dorchester and Cheltenham Town added to those without need of a second go over Hungerford Town and Chesham United– taking them to the Second Round Proper, and a home tie with Swansea City, then in the Football League Division Two and a single goal saw “The Swans” through to the next round. I have been unable to ascertain the attendance on the day but one would assume it was well above the norm (I’ve seen it being reported as 2,047- Ed). BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY, now back in the Wessex world, went out in the Preliminary Round in 2003/04 when Thamesmead Town journeyed to the Waterside from Dartford and won by three goals to one. In the Kent League then but have since risen to the Isthmian League ranks. One year earlier and BOURNEMOUTH made the long haul to Cornwall and St. Blazey but sadly went down to the only goal of the game against the side who were to be South Western League champions at the end of the season. In 1949/50 Bournemouth met Bournemouth Gasworks Athletic in the competition. Fuel for thought! Two consecutive seasons and two results that will not be fondly looked back on by BROCKENHURST. In 1997- 98 they crossed the Severn to Merthyr Tydfil, then in the Southern League and eventual runners up, and lost 7-1. Twelve months later, again in the First Qualifying Round, they entertained Dorking from the Isthmian League Division Three and suffered the same fate. CHRISTCHURCH will be happy to think back to 2007-08 when they defeated Spartan South Midlands side Aylesbury Vale, now known as just Aylesbury, 6-1 at Hurn Bridge. 2001-02 and the Preliminary Round draw sent COWES SPORTS to Kent League side Greenwich Borough within sight of the Thames and they did the hard part by returning to the Island with a two all draw - only to lose the replay 3-0. Their opponents subsequently reached the Isthmian League but resigned from same in the recent shortened season. A team with a long FA Cup history are FAREHAM TOWN but were harshly dealt with by the draw in 2002-03 when they were paired with Isthmian League South side Tooting & Mitcham United, but “The Creeksiders” acquitted themselves well in drawing one apiece at Cams Alders before losing 1-0 in the replay. FLEET TOWN’s entry comes from their Southern League days and a disappointing season in 2003/04 when they finished bottom of the table. The Second Qualifying Round of the Cup sent them all the way to Newmarket, much better known in horse racing than footballing circles, and members of the Eastern Counties Premier League. The home side triumphed 3-0 on the day and have never met anybody else from remotely near the Wessex area before or since that tie. In 2005-06 HAMWORTHY UNITED’s opponents in the First Qualifying Round were a Club that attracted a fair share of headlines during its existence. At that time Team Bath were in the Southern League Premier Division and in the fifth of their nine season existence, the last of which they spent in the Conference South. But continual ground problems amongst other things meant they could not proceed any higher up the Pyramid and they folded. They were, as was to be expected, too good for Hamworthy on the day scoring twice without reply. LYMINGTON TOWN of course met Torquay in the not too distant past but that game has been well documented so it is back to 2009-10 when they met Harrow Hill, already mentioned in connection with Alresford, in the Extra Preliminary Round. Given that Round is always played at the very start of the season. Lymington were without the use of their pitch and the game was played at Bashley, winning 6-0. Harrow Hill were then in the Hellenic League but sadly failed to see the season out. Another club with a long FA Cup history are PORTLAND UNITED that includes an epic meeting with Yeovil that was covered in an earlier Newsletter so we go all the way back to 1966-67 and a trip to Glastonbury, better known for other things than football. The Town’s Club were then in the Western League, along with

the likes of Salisbury, Dorchester and Andover – and Portland – and after a two all draw in Somerset Portland triumphed 4-2 on their own ground. Last but not least – this has been done alphabetically – are SHAFTESBURY and an Extra Preliminary Round tie that saw both Clubs spend some time on the road, The opposition were Liskeard Athletic from the South West Peninsula Premier division and four goals were shared in Cornwall before Liskeard scored three goals without reply in the replay. The Lux Park outfit entered the Competition again the following season but have at time of writing never played in it since. Some different games, some different teams which is what the FA Cup is all about. Hopefully it stirred some memories, and all things being equal we’ll have a look at Division One next week.

We recently heard from this Company who are printing tickets for one of our clubs, and a number of others locally. You may wish to contact them if you feel they may answer your needs. This is not mandatory nor a League recommendation, and please note that other ticket printing companies are available.

Please note that there is a planned closure of the M27 between Junctions 9 and 11 on September 5th to allow for the installation of a new footbridge. Traffic will be diverted for approximately 4 miles along the A27 through Fareham. There are only a handful of fixtures seriously affected and we shall not be making changes to the fixture list. The clubs with no alternative but to take this route en route to or from venues will need to allow for extra journey time. The games look to be AFC Portchester v Fleet Town, Horndean v Bournemouth and Petersfield Town v Folland Sports. Those travelling from Baffins Milton Rovers, Fareham Town and United Services Portsmouth are also advised to make provision for this as are those travelling to or from the Isle of Wight, who may be affected if using the Portsmouth Ferry terminal. Almost next door, Fawley went down 5-0 to visitors Bashley with goals from Conor Whiteley, Lewis Ross, Cameron Beard, Harry McGrath and Harry Morgan being reported, and just another short distance away at Clayfields Hythe & Dibden lost 6-3 against Midhurst & Easebourne. Ethan Anders, Marlon Mason and Mig Dark the marksmen. Laverstock & Ford ran in five against Brockenhurst with Chae Sykes hitting a hat trick, and Russell Jones a pair. Jude Nwachukwu with the consolation for the Badgers. Conor Jevon and Aaron Scott with the goals for New Milton Town who beat Christchurch 2-0 in a match curtailed due to a floodlight issue. Lymington Town beat Folland Sports 5-2 thanks to goals from Nathan Hurst, Luke Churchill, Tyrone Carkeet, Dom Falco and Owen Fee, sorry but no details received from the Planemakers. Down west Portland United beat a Champion Sports Group side 5-0 with Alex Godfrey and Ryan McKechnie both notching a double. Josh Williams also on the scoresheet. A Morgan Cole strike saw Ringwood Town earn a 1-1 draw against Whiteley Wanderers. Romsey Town defeated Empire 5-2 with strikes coming from Jack Odam, Sam Adams, Kieran Hancock and, weighing in with a double, George Callard. Finally on the Tuesday Downton didn’t repeat their success from the weekend and went down 3-0 at Shaftesbury the Rockies’ goals coming from Aaron Laney with a brace and Connor Millar. Turning to Wednesday Whitchurch United shared four goals with Winchester Castle at Longmeadow, Ryan Long and Malin Bowman notched for the Jamboys. The other game on the evening saw Chichester City win 4-1 at Baffins Milton Rovers the home scorer details have not been passed on. Thursday saw Christchurch hit eight past Verwood Town with Substitute Ash Pope hitting a second half hat trick. Josh Kirkham bagged a brace with Josh Buck, Billy Walker and Kyle Graham also on the scoresheet. Callum Butler with a consolation penalty for the Potters. Casey Pack was the scorer for AFC Portchester in their draw at Selsey. Two games on Friday evening, both with Naval connections- with United Services Portsmouth winning 2-0 at Cowes Sports thanks to goals from James Franklyn and George Root, but a night to forget at Portland United in a 14-1 defeat to Poole Town, Dom Panesar-Dower netted a consolation. Saturday, and Downton won 7-4 at Chapel Gate against Bournemouth Sports with Tom Moseley grabbing four, Connor Stevens, Jack Mann and Sam Howe also on target for the Robins. Totton & Eling travelled to Midhurst & Easebourne, goals from James Matthews and Luke Shergold saw the Millers bag a 2-1 win. On the Isle of Wight a Joe Butcher goal gave Newport IOW the lead before being pegged back by Shanklin and East Cowes Vics overcame West Wight 3-2 with Ji Nash, Liam Newbold and an OG on the scoresheet. In the north of our area, George Bishop hit a double with Nick Yeomans and Jack Pearson also on target for Whitchurch United in their 4-1 win over Fleet Town- no scorer details provided for the visitors and at Portway the derby between Andover Town and Andover New Street ended in a best of three win for the hosts, Zac Hine and Josh Hewson replying to an Ollie Yates opener, we extend our wished for a speedy recovery to the player injured in this game. At Bonnymead Park Amesbury Town beat Bemerton’s second string 2-1 with goals coming courtesy of Jordan Matthews and Davy Newbold. In the east AFC Portchester hit three without reply with Lee Wort getting two of them and Lee Molyneaux the other against a Portsmouth XI, whilst at Pagham Fareham Town ran out as 5-2 winners, Archie Wilcox with a hat trick leading the way. Gary Austin and Casey Bartlett-Scott also hit the net. Horndean went down 5-1 at home against Havant & Waterlooville, Tommy Tierney for the hosts. Alton and Lymington Town shared two goals. George Bowerman for the Brewers, no details from the visitors. Way out west Bemerton Heath Harlequins returned from Saltash United with a best of five victory thanks to goals from Justin Bennett, Danny Finnigan and Ronan Clancy. Shaftesbury went down 4-3 at Wells City with, by coincidence, the same scorers as in midweek for the Rockies. Connor Cocklin with the only goal of the game that saw Hamworthy United beat former members Wimborne Town and a Fatah Makhloufi goal for the Watersiders enough to separate Romsey Town from visitors Blackfield & Langley by the same score line. New Milton Town’s 2-0 score over Bashley was somewhat dampened by an injury to one of the Linnets players, we wish him a speedy recovery. Finally this week in the Bankes Cup Brockenhurst defeated Downton under-23s 5-3 with Sam White notching a hat trick for the Badgers. Freddie Bullard and Kenny Gatera also on the scoresheet.
