SYDENHAMS – THE BEGINNING

As all will be aware, because of the present situation Sydenhams have intimated that they are withdrawing their Sponsorship of the League. That Sponsorship has lasted years, a length of time surely unrivalled in any comparative League across the Country (and probably at higher levels as well) and has allowed the League to grow and become the envy of many as well as helping so many Clubs over those years. Sydenhams became involved at the start of Season 2003/04, which co-incidentally was the last season that the League comprised only one Division and it is pleasing to see how many Clubs in the League at that time have either progressed to greater things or are still with the League today as the following completed League Table for that season shows. Compared with the previous season there was just one change – Eastleigh had started their climb of the Pyramid with promotion to the Southern League and had been replaced by Winchester City who had won the League the previous season by the proverbial “street”.

RANK DIVISION 1 PL W D L GF GA GD PTS 1 Winchester City 42 35 3 4 151 35 116 108 2 Wimborne Town 42 31 6 5 105 45 60 99 3 Gosport Borough 42 29 5 8 96 40 56 92 4 Lymington & New Milton 42 29 3 10 98 38 60 90 5 AFC Newbury 42 26 4 12 94 53 41 82 6 Andover 42 25 4 13 100 65 35 79 7 Fareham Town 42 24 6 12 71 38 33 78 8 AFC Totton 42 18 10 14 76 55 21 64 9 Brockenhurst 42 19 7 16 49 74 -25 64 10 Thatcham Town 42 16 10 16 70 72 -2 58 11 Christchurch 42 17 6 19 63 62 1 57 12 Bemerton Heath Harlequins 42 16 7 19 77 79 -2 55 13 Hamble ASSC 42 16 7 19 51 76 -25 55 14 Cowes Sports 42 15 8 19 51 59 -8 53 15 BAT Sports 42 13 7 22 57 68 -11 46 16 Portland United 42 14 4 24 58 86 -28 46 17 Moneyfields 42 11 8 23 51 83 -32 41 18 Alton Town 42 12 2 28 55 110 -55 38 19 Downton 42 8 7 27 43 106 -63 31 20 Bournemouth 42 8 6 28 41 86 -45 30 21 Blackfield & Langley 42 7 7 28 51 99 -48 28 22 Whitchurch United 42 7 5 30 38 117 -79 26

It is interesting to note that whilst some have moved to higher levels -and are too be congratulated – only three Clubs are no longer in existence. Lymington & New Milton who perhaps like Icarus flew a bit too close to the sun; Andover, who should have returned to the Wessex League when they opted out of the Southern League, and AFC Newbury who lost their way in 2006 resulting in their withdrawal in October that year. Winchester, Wimborne, Gosport, AFC Totton, Thatcham, Moneyfields and Blackfield have gone on to greater things whilst the remainder have remained true to the Wessex League and we thank them for their continuing support.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 52

Looking at the above table would seem to suggest that goals were in far greater supply in those now far off days with three Clubs topping the hundred mark and the column looking far from clever in one or two places. Lymington & New Milton had the best run in the FA Cup reaching the Fourth Qualifying Round, defeating Clevedon Town 8-2 before losing to Salisbury. There were creditable wins for Wimborne, Andover, Thatcham, Christchurch and Whitchurch over Backwell United, Arundel, Selsey, Devizes and Withdean respectively. Mention too of Bournemouth who drew one all at Taunton but lost the replay at Victoria Park while Whitchurch exited at the hands of Tooting & Mitcham at Longmeadow. In the FA Vase one Club outstripped all the others with Winchester defeating AFC Sudbury to claim the Trophy and become the second Wessex League side, after Wimborne, to claim that particular crown. It was a huge season for Winchester – FA Vase winners, League Champions and League Cup winners in their first season since leaving the Hampshire League.

The following season saw the merger with the Hampshire League, seeing the Wessex League expand to three Divisions. In time it returned to, and has stayed at two Divisions and also embraced Reserve Divisions for a spell and is now recognised as one of the best Step Five Leagues in the Country This has been achieved by a lot of hard work by a lot of people but made possible by the backing of Sydenhams very much led by Ray Pride. 2003/04 was a good year for Winchester, a good year for the Wessex League and the start of a long journey with Sydenhams. We thank them and wish them well for the future.

WEEK FORTY EIGHT ROUND UP

This is the last edition this season (2019/20), we’ll be back next week for the new season- whenever that will start. Enjoy the read, and don’t forget to get in touch with your articles and or stories that you’d like to pass on! To whet the appetite the next few editions will look back at milestones in the league, starting with Year One, 1986/87. Clubs who have organised or are arranging pre-season games are requested to let me know through email or Twitter so that we can build up a list for games planned. Goes without saying that such games can only proceed once the guidelines provide for them, and the current regulations for training- and six people under social distancing have not changed as at time of writing. Last week we ran a story about the FA Amateur Cup, with thanks to Dave Cairns, RMLI were indeed the Royal Marine Light Infantry, they merged with the RMA - Royal Marine Artillery to form the Royal Marines in 1923 and became Commandos as we know them now, from 1942 onwards. Hampshire County FA have announced news as regards their County Cup competitions and the fact that the Senior Cup will NOT be played for in 2020/21, for the full story please visit their website for more details- hampshirefa.com/news/2020/jun/26/county-cup-competitions-202021-update
