Saturday, 27 June 2020 Page 2 of 6 SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 52 SYDENHAMS – THE BEGINNING As all will be aware, because of the present situation Sydenhams have intimated that they are withdrawing their Sponsorship of the League. That Sponsorship has lasted years, a length of time surely unrivalled in any comparative League across the Country (and probably at higher levels as well) and has allowed the League to grow and become the envy of many as well as helping so many Clubs over those years. Sydenhams became involved at the start of Season 2003/04, which co-incidentally was the last season that the League comprised only one Division and it is pleasing to see how many Clubs in the League at that time have either progressed to greater things or are still with the League today as the following completed League Table for that season shows. Compared with the previous season there was just one change – Eastleigh had started their climb of the Pyramid with promotion to the Southern League and had been replaced by Winchester City who had won the Hampshire League the previous season by the proverbial “street”. Lymington & New Milton who perhaps like Icarus flew a bit too close to the sun; Andover, who should have returned to the Wessex League when they opted out of the Southern League, and AFC Newbury who lost their way in 2006 resulting in their withdrawal in October that year. Winchester, Wimborne, Gosport, AFC Totton, Thatcham, Moneyfields and Blackfield have gone on to greater things whilst the remainder have remained true to the Wessex League and we thank them for their continuing support. Saturday, 27 June 2020 Page 3 of 6 SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 52 Looking at the above table would seem to suggest that goals were in far greater supply in those now far off days with three Clubs topping the hundred mark and the goal difference column looking far from clever in one or two places. Lymington & New Milton had the best run in the FA Cup reaching the Fourth Qualifying Round, defeating Clevedon Town 8-2 before losing to Salisbury. There were creditable wins for Wimborne, Andover, Thatcham, Christchurch and Whitchurch over Backwell United, Arundel, Selsey, Devizes and Withdean respectively. Mention too of Bournemouth who drew one all at Taunton but lost the replay at Victoria Park while Whitchurch exited at the hands of Tooting & Mitcham at Longmeadow. In the FA Vase one Club outstripped all the others with Winchester defeating AFC Sudbury to claim the Trophy and become the second Wessex League side, after Wimborne, to claim that particular crown. It was a huge season for Winchester – FA Vase winners, League Champions and League Cup winners in their first season since leaving the Hampshire League. LEAGUE CUP FINAL- Bemerton Heath Harlequins 0 Winchester City 2 (Blake, Mancey) at Fawcetts Field- Lymington & New Milton on 3rd May 2004 attendance 287 Bemerton Heath Harlequins: Scott Kemmis, Nathan Renyard, Matt Baker (Mark Daubney), Adam Nash, Jamie Boswell, Carl Jones, Jason Ahmet, Neil Cole (Darren Crook), Stuart Findlay, Paul Palmer (Ian Chalk), Darren Harding. Winchester City: Simon Arthur, Shaun Dyke (Stewart Lang), Matt Bicknell, Toby Redwood, David Goss, Mark Blake (Adam Rogers), Lloyd Webber, Gary Green, Ian Mancey, Andrew Forbes (Steve Tate), Liam Green. Referee: Wendy Toms The following season saw the merger with the Hampshire League, seeing the Wessex League expand to three Divisions. In time it returned to, and has stayed at two Divisions and also embraced Reserve Divisions for a spell and is now recognised as one of the best Step Five Leagues in the Country This has been achieved by a lot of hard work by a lot of people but made possible by the backing of Sydenhams very much led by Ray Pride. 2003/04 was a good year for Winchester, a good year for the Wessex League and the start of a long journey with Sydenhams. We thank them and wish them well for the future. ANSWER BY NUMBERS In the order of the questions from last week, the answers are:- 3-16-13-12-51-7-23-31-30-32-17-26 1.
