BLAST FROM THE PAST

SYDENHAMS WESSEX LEAGUE CUP FINAL Played at Thatcham Town Ground on Monday 1st May 2006. AFC TOTTON 1-0 ANDOVER

AFC Totton won The Sydenhams Wessex League Cup in a hard fought match with Andover that went into extra time before a solitary goal settled the contest. Play was even at the start and there was not a lot of goalmouth action until the 11th minute when Dave Goss headed a Gosney right wing free kick against the bar. Colin Hopkins in the Andover goal then became a busy man saving a James Roden header after 34 minutes and shortly after tipped over a Mark Osman header from a corner. Totton finished the half on top but the Andover defence marshalled by Glen Damen and Callum Earl stood firm. HT 0-0 The second half commenced with Totton on top and Fouad Hamodu almost latched onto a back pass but the ball was deflected wide. The resulting corner was headed against the bar and cleared up field. In the 48th minute Hamodu was through on goal again but Hopkins saved with his legs. Andover nearly scored in the 67th minute and Iain Brunnschweiler had to punch clear when Lee Chudy crossed, and soon after had to dive to stop a long range effort by Wayne Sale. Play went to the other end and Hopkins made a brilliant one handed save pushing the ball over the bar from point blank range in a goalmouth melee. Totton kept attacking until the end of normal time in a physical battle with 9 yellow cards being shown. FT 0-0 Extra time arrived and Totton took the lead in 94th minute when a misdirected Vine header fell short of the Andover keeper and Fouad HAMODU got to the ball first and lobbed the advancing Hopkins and into the net. Totton kept the pressure up with Hopkins making several fine saves from Roden and Osman. Andover kept going to the end but could not breach a resolute Totton defence. The Cup was presented to AFC Totton by The Sydenhams Wessex League Chairman Alf Peckham and The Man of the Match award went to Mark Osman for his pace and skill up front for Totton. This appeared to be popular with the 350 plus crowd that attended.

ADVANCE NOTICE OF ROADWORKS - A31 RINGWOOD

Those travelling to or from Bournemouth, Christchurch, Hamworthy United, Ringwood Town and Verwood Town could face a year of traffic chaos as a busy slip road onto the A31 could close for a year. Highways England plans to introduce a third lane and widen the A31 in Ringwood when works start later this year. Whilst it is appreciated that this is a long way ahead, please bookmark this in readiness as it is likely to cause a great deal of congestion locally. The works mean the westbound slip road from the Ringwood Roundabout will close in November, potentially for a whole year. This may mean drivers are forced to travel east and turning at Poulner to head West towards Bournemouth. A contraflow system will also be in place, meaning road users travelling west will move to the eastbound carriageway. The project is planned to commence in November with the reconstruction of the slip road, and then from January 2022, the A31 westbound will be closed to facilitate the reconstruction work, construction of a third lane and demolition work.”

EAST COWES VICS – 1000 MATCHES

The third and last in our trilogy of articles regarding Clubs who have completed one thousand games in the Wessex League, writes John Gorman and having started with Bournemouth in the West of the region and followed that with Whitchurch United in the North, we finish on the Island with East Cowes Vics. Vics initially joined the Hampshire League as far back as 1947 when Division Two included long forgotten Clubs such as Portsmouth Electricity and Whites Sports Club. In 1977/78 they finished third in Division Two and were promoted to Division One. Four seasons there, relegation followed by immediate promotion and the First Division Title in 1985/86 and 1986/87. The second success saw them promoted to the Wessex League for season 1987/88, the second season of the League’s existence. Under the long-time stewardship of Joe Reed and with Graham Daish as Manager and a youthful John Simpkins in goal they played game number one in the Wessex League at home on 22nd August 1987. To add to the occasion, they were faced with rather unknown opposition as Sussex based Steyning Town were the visitors with Vics winning 3-0 with goals from Mark Deacon- with a 14th minute opener, Simon Moore and an own goal. Vics went on to finish fifteenth in the table but marked their first season by winning the League Cup, defeating Romsey at Newport’s old ground at Church Litten on Thursday 12th May 1988. Paul Butler and John Hazell with the goals, with the line ups being shown here.

East Cowes Victoria: John Simpkins, Carl Young, Paul Cade, John Hazell, Gerry Shaw, John Watson, Ian Minshall (Andy Watson), Andy Butler, Tony Blow, Mark Deacon, Paul Butler. Romsey Town: Brown, Chandler, Dave Fear, Lee Rankin, Battey, O’Leary, Paul Jones, Alan Williams, Mark Brockway, Simon Preston (Benfield), Steve Jones. Unused sub: Bell. Referee: Andy Pearson

They returned to Hampshire League Football after relegation in 1999/00 but regained their Wessex League status in 2004/05 and the second game of that season marked their 500th game in the Competition. Again it was a home fixture with US Portsmouth the visitors and one suspects an enjoyable four all draw the result. A large step forward to 2017/18 when the one thousand mark was reached on one of the Club’s longer journeys, a Saturday afternoon trip to Tadley Calleva in the North of the County and a 2-1 defeat - Darryl Phillips and Sam Hamilton scoring for the home side and Ji Nash claiming the Vics goal. All the above would not have been possible without the hard work of a lot of people. Running a Football Club is difficult at the best of times but having to cross to the Mainland every other game adds to the workload and the expense. Joe Reed played a major part in the Club’s administration and success over the years and Graham Daish had a spell as Chairman after handing over the managerial reins to Alan Reed. Happily Graham still follows the Clubs fortunes to this day. It was one of the darkest days in the Club’s history when Alan Reed lost his life in a road accident in early 1990. Lee Bray, now a long serving Officer of the League, took the Secretary’s chair for a number of years with Steve Stay as Chairman and Arthur Richards filled both posts before Darren Dyer became Secretary in 2002, a position he has only relinquished in the last couple of years, Darren probably vies with the late Andy Hardwick at Bemerton as the longest serving Secretary in the Wessex League and his value to, and work for, the Club over those years cannot be underestimated. Coming to date the addition to the ranks of Paul Phelps as Chairman allied to Darren and the hard working John Simpkins gives the Club a firm base. Results on the field may not have always been as the Club would wish but East Cowes Vics have been and are a credit to the League and Beatrice Avenue is always the friendliest of places to visit. Here’s to the next thousand. My grateful thanks to Darren, Lee and Gary Day for their invaluable help with the above. Saturday, 24 April 2021 Page 6 of 9

CLUB NEWS

We heard from Gary Budden at Folland Sports that their Reserve Team Manager Simon Butler turned out for the side last week at the age of 53, is this a record for teams in our membership, anyone know or can provide similar tales of longevity? We were sorry to hear of the sudden passing of Sholing club photographer Ray Routledge during the last week. Some of his work enhanced the match reports from when the Boatmen were members of the League, and we extend our sincere condolences to family and friends at this sad time. Following the Moneyfields win in the Portsmouth Senior Cup they will face Baffins Milton Rovers in the Final, date to be confirmed. The Buildbase FA Vase by United Services Portsmouth extends their record breaking run in the competition and sees them pocket some £7,700 in prize money to date. Next weekend they’ll welcome Hellenic League Premier Division side Flackwell Heath to the Victory Stadium, congratulations to all concerned. The Heathens reached this stage with a 4-2 win against Plymouth Parkway yesterday and are also first timers to the Quarter Final stage. Our representatives are the lowest ranked team left in the competition.
