AFC TOTTON 1-0 ANDOVER AFC Totton won The Sydenhams Wessex League Cup in a hard fought match with Andover that went into extra time before a solitary goal settled the contest. Play was even at the start and there was not a lot of goalmouth action until the 11th minute when Dave Goss headed a Gosney right wing free kick against the bar. Colin Hopkins in the Andover goal then became a busy man saving a James Roden header after 34 minutes and shortly after tipped over a Mark Osman header from a corner. Totton finished the half on top but the Andover defence marshalled by Glen Damen and Callum Earl stood firm. HT 0-0 The second half commenced with Totton on top and Fouad Hamodu almost latched onto a back pass but the ball was deflected wide. The resulting corner was headed against the bar and cleared up field. In the 48th minute Hamodu was through on goal again but Hopkins saved with his legs. Andover nearly scored in the 67th minute and Iain Brunnschweiler had to punch clear when Lee Chudy crossed, and soon after had to dive to stop a long range effort by Wayne Sale. Play went to the other end and Hopkins made a brilliant one handed save pushing the ball over the bar from point blank range in a goalmouth melee. Totton kept attacking until the end of normal time in a physical battle with 9 yellow cards being shown. FT 0-0 Extra time arrived and Totton took the lead in 94th minute when a misdirected Vine header fell short of the Andover keeper and Fouad HAMODU got to the ball first and lobbed the advancing Hopkins and into the net. Totton kept the pressure up with Hopkins making several fine saves from Roden and Osman. Andover kept going to the end but could not breach a resolute Totton defence. The Cup was presented to AFC Totton by The Sydenhams Wessex League Chairman Alf Peckham and The Man of the Match award went to Mark Osman for his pace and skill up front for Totton. This appeared to be popular with the 350 plus crowd that attended. ADVANCE NOTICE OF ROADWORKS - A31 RINGWOOD Those travelling to or from Bournemouth, Christchurch, Hamworthy United, Ringwood Town and Verwood Town could face a year of traffic chaos as a busy slip road onto the A31 could close for a year. Highways England plans to introduce a third lane and widen the A31 in Ringwood when works start later this year. Whilst it is appreciated that this is a long way ahead, please bookmark this in readiness as it is likely to cause a great deal of congestion locally. The works mean the westbound slip road from the Ringwood Roundabout will close in November, potentially for a whole year. This may mean drivers are forced to travel east and turning at Poulner to head West towards Bournemouth. A contraflow system will also be in place, meaning road users travelling west will move to the eastbound carriageway. The project is planned to commence in November with the reconstruction of the slip road, and then from January 2022, the A31 westbound will be closed to facilitate the reconstruction work, construction of a third lane and demolition work.” Saturday, 24 April 2021 Page 3 of 9 SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 43 ALL OFFERS RUN FROM 1 MARCH TO 31 MAY 2021.
