The Citizens Post from the boardroom

Welcome to the Simplyhealth City Ground for this evening's Bet Victor Southern League Division One South fixture between Winchester City and AFC Totton.

We welcome the players, staff, committee and supporters from AFC Totton and we hope you enjoy your evening with us and have a safe journey home.

Our season started with a 3-3 draw at Bristol Manor Farm on Saturday, with the players showing resilience and a fighting spirit having twice come from behind in the game.

There has been a lot going on behind the scenes at the club this summer. Most notably, we welcome Josh Taylor, as our new Head of Development, replacing Ryan Andress, who is new Assistant Manager at Brockenhurst..

On the pitch Tyrell Mitford, Josh Harfield and Jake Rawkins have left the club and joining us are Olly Balmer, Kieron Douglas, Keith Emmerson, Max Smith, Harry Birchnall and Mario Nurse.

We are delighted to welcome Rekan, Dutton Gregory and PWC Cleaning as new sponsors on board and we also welcome Basingstoke Town to The Simplyhealth City Ground, who have made us their temporary home until the end of October.

You will also note the return of the printed programme. You can still view this online but thanks to Roger Gough and the Printroom in Chandler's Ford, we now have a printed programme too!

The Citizens Post DAVOs diary

Good evening and a very warm welcome to everyone for today’s first home league game of the 2019/20 season, we have barely played at home all pre season, we are all excited to be back here where our record has been so good for the last couple of years! I must also wish a welcome to local neigh- bours AFC Totton for the game, I wish Louis and Adam and their players and supporters a pleasant stay with us and a good season ahead, they are always tough opponents for us, thankfully we finally broke our duck against them last time out, so we hope for a similar result tonight, no doubting it will be a tough game and we will need to be at our best for the positive result that we want.

Saturday was an eventful start to the season, as always we gave plenty of value for money, a 3-3 draw against our bogey side Bristol Manor Farm who we had only ever played 4 times as a club and lost all 4! We were also with- out Danny King, Keith Emmerson and Olly Balmer so that made it tougher. We went behind early on but equalised thought Simba only to fall behind again before half time albeit with a stonewall penalty turned down. Second half we came out and dominated the game, they had a man sent off but immediately they scored to go 3-1 up, uphill task for us then.... we battled very well and a great move was finished by Rob Carr, then a great ball by Baz was tucked away for the equaliser by the brilliant Simba who had an immense display and deserved his 2 goals! Sadly we couldn’t get that winner we hoped for but in the end all things considered it was a good point.

On the player front, we have agreed to let Graham Williams out on dual registration to Bemerton as he needs game time. We had Olly Balmer miss- ing through injury today but hopefully will be back for tonight. George Short is the only other injury we have at the minute, hopefully he will be back soon. We do have a couple of other players missing tonight sadly, we are a couple of weeks away from being full strength as a squad that’s for sure.

Enjoy today’s game, we need our excellent support with us as always, Totton are very well supported and we will need our 12th man today!

Up the citizens!

Todays Visitors AFC TOTTON

Totton Football Club was formed in 1886 & became a founder member of the F.A. when it was inaugurated. It was also a founder member of the New Forest League, formed in 1904.

After the 1914-18 War, Totton entered the Southampton Senior League, the New Forest League & in 1920-21 joined the West. The games were played at South Testwood Park, before Totton moved to Testwood Park on the 30th December 1933. In 1975 the club amalgamated with Totton Athletic, installed floodlights & opened a Club Room with a Bar at the ground.

Totton’s most successful season was in 1981-82 when they won the Hampshire League Division 1 title for the first time, the Russell Côtes Cup, Hampshire Intermediate Cup, Southampton Senior Cup & the Reg Mathieson Trophy. In 1983 Totton reached the 5th round of the FA Vase, losing 1-0 away to the cup holders Forest Green Rovers.

Totton became a founder member of the Wessex League when it was formed in the 1986-87 season, finishing third. In 1989-90 Totton won the Medisport Wessex League Cup & in the 1990-91 season was runner-up to Southern League Bashley in the Russell Côtes Cup.

In 2001, the club reached the 4th Round of the Carlsberg FA Vase. The 2002-03 season saw the Club enjoy a good FA Cup run before losing to Slough Town in a 1st Qualifying Round replay. The Club did gain some silverware though, beating League Champions Eastleigh 2-1 in the final of the Jewson Cup.

The 2005-06 season saw many changes. With Stuart Ritchie now at the helm, the team achieved 4th place in the League. The club had a good FA Cup run & won the Wessex League Cup for a third time.

2006-07, proved to be the most memorable in our history. The first Team had a season-long battle with Gosport, missing out on the League title by one goal. This was disappointing after leading the table from October until the last week of the season. The highlight was reaching the FA Carlsberg Vase Final for the first time in the Club’s history. Played at the new Wembley Stadium in front of a record 36,232 crowd for a Vase Final, we had to settle for Runners-up spot, losing 3-1 to Truro City.

The 2007-08 season saw a good early run in the FA Cup & that momentum extended into a great run in the League. The team produced a stunning 27 points from 30 in March & April. This sealed our first Wessex League Championship & promotion to the BGB Southern League. Those two seasons will linger long in the memory of those lucky enough to be part of the adventure & a glowing tribute to a dedicated team with fantastic support. An exciting new adventure was about to begin!

2008-09 saw AFC Totton reach new heights after being promoted to the Southern League South and West Division One. After a table topping start, we eventually finished 3rd in the league. After beating Beaconsfield SYCOB in the play-off semi-final, we had a home tie in the final against Didcot Town. It was a superb match which went to extra time, before Didcot scored the winner.

2009-10 had seen AFC Totton lift the after reaching the final for the first time in the Club’s history. This wrapped up yet another great season for the Stags as we narrowly missed out on promotion for the second season in a row. After finishing runners up in the league, we lost the play-off semi-final to Cirencester Town 2-3, despite coming from 2 goals down to unfortunately concede a goal in the 90th minute.

2010-11 was another successful season in the club’s history, retaining the Hampshire Senior Cup for the second time after beating Sholing 3-1 at St. Mary’s Stadium. This was eclipsed by the club being crowned Champions of the Southern League South and West Division. The Club was named club of the season for the South and West Division & also picked up the fair play award along with the Merit Cup for crowned Champions of the Southern League South and West Division. The Club was named club of the season for the South and West Division & also picked up the fair play award along with the Merit Cup for the most goals scored. The Club also celebrated a golden boot award for one of the crowd favourites Mike Gosney, who scored 36 goals. The Club were pleased to see another crowd favourite doing well & penning his first pro contract, securing a deal with Port Vale. The highlight of the 2011-12 season was AFC Totton reaching the 2nd round proper of the FA Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. The match against Bristol Rovers was televised live on ITV & our visitors came out on top in convincing style. Nevertheless history was written & shall never be forgotten. This was not the only history making event of the season. Stefan Brown made his mark in the record books by scoring the fastest FA Cup hat-trick by a substitute, scoring all 3 goals in 15 second half minutes. AFC Totton also reached the Hampshire Senior Cup final for the 3rd season in succession, losing 2-0 Eastleigh. The Club narrowly missed promotion to the Conference South after losing 4-2 to Oxford City in the play-off final after only one season at Southern level.

The 2012-13 season saw AFC Totton consolidate their position in the Southern Premier League, finishing 14th. The home results disappointingly didn’t match performances away from the Testwood Stadium.

The Red Insure Cup saw an early exit at the hands of Sholing, but a better run in the Hants Senior Cup ended against a strong AFC Bournemouth side. With scores level at 90 minutes, the Stags lost out 4-2 on penalties. A tremendous effort from our Youth side saw them beat AFC Bournemouth after an epic 11-10 penalty victory in FA Youth Cup. Unfortunately, they lost in the next round of the competition but the win away at Bournemouth will remain in the memory of those who attended. In the FA Cup progress was made to the 4th Qualifying Round where the Stags lost 3-2 at home to Cambridge City. On the way they recorded a remarkable result in defeating the then Conference South side Truro City by the same score in Cornwall. In the FA Trophy, Totton were rewarded by three home draws when beating Bideford, Gosport Borough & Conference South Basingstoke Town. Despite a fine performance at Blue Square Premier side Forest Green Rovers, we lost by a solitary goal in time added on.

The 2013-14 season saw the Stags undergo major changes, caused by previous miss-management of the Club. Forced to field mainly inexperienced youngsters in the tough surroundings of the Southern Premier League, relegation was half expected. Although as the players matured performances improved, the dreaded drop could not be avoided.

The Club has spent the last few seasons rebuilding & in 2018-19 finished 10th in the Southern League Division One South. The committee, management & playing squad are looking forward to the 2019-20 season as the club grows both on & off the field. Winchester picked up their first point in five league matches against Bristol Manor Farm and showed great resilience in coming from 3-1 to earn a share of the spoils. In three of the previous four defeats they scored first and lost so the comeback was particularly meritorious as they started off the season with a point. Their hero was Simba Mlambo who scored two and made one, while for the second successive time in this fixture Lewis Bamford scored a brace for the home team.

Winchester''s preparation did not got off to the best start with Keith Emmerson and Danny King unavaila- ble to add to the fact that Ollie Balmer was injured. For the second successive time in this fixture striker Oli Bailey who has been a major goalscorer for the club in the last two years was on the bench.

Winchester fell behind in the 8th minute when Bamford held on to the ball well, held off a challenge and scored from inside the area. However Winchester drew level when Jamie Barron put through Mlambo who won a one on with the home goalkeeper. Mlambo was denied by a block by a home defender, but the home side regained the lead when Bamford scored with a low shot in the corner from inside the area.

In the second half Winchester bought on Max Smith and Ollie Bailey for Ollie Griggs and Liam Gilbert, Midway through the half Bristol Manor Farm were reduced to 10 men when Jack Durrant received a second yellow card. Shortly after the sending off Bristol Manor Farm restored their two goal lead when close season signing Joe Tumelty who had come on a second half substitute scored directly with a free kick that appeared to take a deflection.

Three minutes after falling two goals behind Winchester pulled a goal back when from a Mlambo cross Rob Carr volleyed home from close range.

With 10 minutes to go Mlambo again won a one on one with the goalkeeper and managed to round him and level the scores and that is the way it stood until the end.

On Friday Winchester are at home to AFC Stoneham in the F A Cup and on Monday they are away to Basingstoke who will be sharing the ground with them at the start of the season in the league. The Citizens Post malcolms musings

We welcome AFC Totton to Winchester for tonight’s game which represents our first home league match of the season. In last season’s corresponding match we won 2-1 with former AFC Totton player Rob Flooks giving us the lead, Justin Bennett levelling the scores and Jamie Barron scoring the winning goal following up after his initial penalty kick was saved. Earlier in that season we drew 1-1 on a Tuesday night with the match having to be rearranged due to our F A Cup commitments, with Oli Bailey giving us a first half lead we were good value for, and our former striker Craig Feeney levelling the scores as the home team came much more into the game, during the second period.

We welcome to the club new signings .Ollie Balmer. Keiran Douglas and Keith Emmerson plus Dan Williamson who has rejoined the club and thank those players who were also at the club last season who have committed themselves to play for the club again.

There is plenty of links between the clubs with Craig Davis, Rob Flooks and Liam Gilbert, on the Winchester side serving both clubs as either a player or a manager, while on the other side of the coin AFC Totton are likely to have a few personnel both on and off the field with Winchester City connections..

Like ourselves AFC Totton are a former Wessex League club, and the teams were in the same division of this competition in both 2004/05 and 2005/06 with AFC Totton joining the Southern League as Wessex League champions in 2008, two years after Winchester achieved the same. The two clubs have both represented the Wessex League in the F A Vase final, with Winchester winning in 2004 and AFC Totton being losing finalists in the 2007 season

Apart from their Wessex League tile success, their appearance in the F A Vase final at Wembley, their appearance on TV in the second round proper of the F A Cup against Bristol Rovers in 2011/12 and their promotion to the Southern League Premier I remember their Wessex League Cup winning sides of 1990 and 2003. The first of these included Paul Doswell whose pace up front interested Havant who hosted the final and they ended up signing him, while the second included Wayne Shaw who is still involved with AFC Totton. Paul Doswell’s son Conor who is on the Winchester staff was not even born when his Dad Paul played in the Wessex League cup final for AFC Totton, but I remember him initially in 2002 when he came along to watch Eastleigh when his Dad was manager of the club. Conor however joined Winches- ter City at the start of this Season, having previously been at Winchester Castle and we wish him well in his new role.

However it was not always plain sailing for them in the Weesex League. On the final day of the 1993/94 season they were favourites to be relegated with Swanage and Whitchurch the only teams they could catch. They were playing Gosport, Swanage were playing BAT and Whitchurch were playing Eastleigh. Interestingly enough Gosport, BAT and Eastleigh were at the time all managed by former AFC Totton bosses. However with AFC Totton winning their game and Whitchurch going down to a goal similar in nature to Geoff Hurst’s second goal in the 1966 World Cup final, They also only narrowly stayed up in 1996/97, finishing only three points ahead of bottom club Petersfield Town.

The current manager is Louis Langdown and from 2011/12 to 2013/14 they played in the Southern League Premier Division reaching the playoffs in the first of these seasons. From 2009/10 to 2011/12 they reached three Hampshire Senior Cup finals, winning two of them. The two clubs met in the F A Cup in 2008/09 with AFC Totton emerging 3-0 winners. www.shorewoodhomes.co.uk Winchester City FC CLUB HISTORY

The Winchester Football Club was founded in 1884 as a result of the endeavours of two residents of the city – Oxford graduate and former England Rugby cap Charles Sylvester Wooldridge and Hunting- don-born all-round sportsman (and, incidentally, inventor of ice hockey!) Arnold Tebbutt. The football club, which had strong links with Winchester College, made quite an impact in the early years of in Hampshire, reaching the final of the inaugural Hampshire Senior Cup competition in 1888 and providing a number of players to represent Hampshire in county-based competitions. However financial difficulties, combined with the indifference of Winchester residents, led to the 1884 club folding in 1893.

The decline of the city’s most high-profile club left a void that was subsequently to be filled by the Winchester Swallows FC. Formed in 1891, the Swallows were less socially exclusive than the 1884 club and had a membership more reflective of that of Winchester as a whole. The club changed its name to Winchester FC at the start of the start of the 1894/95 season, and again in 1907 when it became Winchester City FC. Like the 1884 club, the Swallows appeared in a dark blue and white strip and played their home games at Bar End, before moving in 1896 to a field adjoining the Old Red Deer pub in Stockbridge Road, and relocating again to the Roebuck Inn in 1902.

The club first played in a league-based competition in 1896/97 when it entered the newly-formed South Hampshire League. Winchester FC won the title in this first season, and repeated that feat in the each of the following three years. The club joined the Hampshire League in 1898/99 where, after struggling during their first few seasons, they remained unbeaten throughout the 1904/05 season and won the League’s Northern Section. The club also enrolled to the Southampton and District League in 1908/09, but with no notable success.

Like a number of other football clubs, Winchester City FC effectively disbanded at the start of the First World War in 1914, and didn’t reappear until 1920. The rebirth of the club signalled two significant changes. Firstly, the club had moved again, this time playing its home fixtures at the Fair Field at Bar End (now the site of the Bar End Industrial Estate), a site where it was to stay until the Second World War. Secondly, it adopted a new strip, discarding its navy-blue colours in favour of red and white stripes.

The late 20s and early 30s proved to be a purple patch in City’s fortunes. The 1929/30 season saw the side again win the Northern Section of the Hampshire League, and achieve its most successful FA Cup run to date. That year saw City reach the fourth qualifying round of the tournament where a 3-0 defeat by Thames FC at the 120,000 capacity West Ham Stadium deprived them of an away trip to Fulham in the First-Round proper. Any disappointment at this would have been forgotten two years later in 1931 when City lifted the Hampshire Senior Cup for the first time after defeating Andover at The Dell.

One of the key members of the team in that era was the teenage Ted Drake. A local gas meter-reader at the time of joining City, Drake went on to enjoy a successful career with Southampton before joining Arsenal and also collecting five England caps. The highlight of his subsequent managerial career saw him steer Chelsea to their first (and, until 2005, their only) league title in 1955. Play was again interrupted by war in 1939, although the club did continue to play and took advantage of the presence of a number of enlisted players that passed through the city. The end of hostilities saw City move yet again, this time taking up a lease of the Army’s playing field at Airlie Road, Stanmore.

The 1950s saw a second notable period of success at Winchester City. The side were runners up in the Hampshire League in 1949/50 and, in the same season, won their first Southampton Senior Cup final, an achievement which was repeated in 1951/52. The Russell Cotes Cup was also won for the first time in 1954/55. Success on the field was mirrored off the pitch as the club enjoyed some of its largest gates with crowds that regularly topped 1,000 filing into the Airlie Road stands. CLUB HISTORY

It was during this period that the young Terry Paine ran out for his hometown club. His prodigious talent led to his being signed in 1956 by Southampton with whom he made a record number of appearances (713 over 17 seasons). Paine also made 19 appearances for England, the last of which was against Mexico in the 1966 World Cup finals for which he (belatedly) received a winner’s medal in 2009.

Prior to the 1970s City had played virtually all of its competitive football, with the exceptions of the Amateur and FA Cups, within the confines of the Hampshire county border. However, after the club’s Russell Cotes Cup victory and a creditable second spot in the Hampshire League in 1970/71 the club’s Board decided to make the step up and enter the Southern League for the first time. City survived for just two seasons at that higher level, achieving disappointing final positions of 12th out of 16 (1971/72) and 21st out of 22 (1972/73), before electing to return to the Hampshire League.

For the remainder of the 1970s City yoyo’d between the top two divisions of the Hampshire League before a potentially fatal blow hit the club in 1981. In that year the lease agreement with the Army for Airlie Road expired and was not renewed. Briefly homeless, the club eventually moved to its current ground, a pitch leased from the City Council at Hillier Way. The ground needed a considerable amount of work to get it up to scratch, as did the team which had tumbled into the Hampshire League’s third division by 1982/83. The ignominy of this decline was made all the greater by the success of local rivals Winchester Castle in the first division – City could no longer claim to be Winchester’s premier club.

The continuing existence of Winchester City FC throughout the 1980s owed much to the work of Geoff Cox who at various times acted as Chairman, Manager, Coach and Groundsman at the club. Under his guidance the club was eventually to return to the Hampshire League’s top division in 1993/94. The new millennium ushered in a period of unprecedented success for Winchester City. Prompted in part by the arrival of new and ambitious members to the Board, the club merged with Winchester Castle and began a rapid rise through the local league structure. Promotion to the was achieved in 2000/01, and followed two years later by promotion to the Wessex League. The Wessex League title was secured at the first attempt.

That same season witnessed the club’s greatest ever triumph. May 2004 saw City face Suffolk side AFC Sudbury in the final of FA Vase at Birmingham City’s St Andrew’s ground. Few that were there will forget the spine-jangling moment when club captain Danny Smith lifted the trophy after the 2-0 victory.

Further successes were recorded in the seasons that followed – 2004/05 saw City win the Hampshire Senior Cup for the second time, beating Aldershot 2-1 at Bournemouth’s ground, whilst 2005/06 witnessed the club regain the Wessex League championship and win promotion to the Southern League for a second spell. City’s return to the Southern League lasted three seasons. Financial problems, followed by a final day points deduction saw City return to the Wessex League for the 2009/10 campaign. Despite a concerted push to gain promotion back to the Southern League which ultimately proved successful in 2011/12, the resources required to sustain the club’s position at that level proved elusive. Winchester City FC finished the 2012/13 season at the foot of the Southern league and facing an uncertain future. The late spring of 2013 saw a takeover at the club and, with a new Committee structure and financial backers in place, the 2013/14 season heralds the start of a new chapter in the history of Winchester City FC.

2013-2014 saw a season of re-organisation and team building, with City retaining a place in the Syden- hams Wessex League.

2015-2016 – City made a valiant attempt to take the Wessex title but just fell short to a very successful Peters field Town side who were rightly promoted to the Southern League. City under the Managership of Paul Masters then set about strengthening the squad to win the title next season when out of the blue they were offered a place in the Southern League due to a withdrawal. The Club were given 24 hours to pay their fees and attend the AGM in Torquay. A frantic drive by Director of Football Dave Malone saw him arrive just in time with the relevant papers and bank draft! As a result, our neighbours, Peters field Town, were moved out of Division 1 South and West to accommodate City and placed in the Central Division! CLUB HISTORY

City's first season back in the Southern League was a success with them reaching the play-offs final losing to Banbury United in the quarter finals, who were promoted and coming within minutes of winning the Hampshire Senior Cup losing on penalties to Havant and Waterlooville. City's preparation for this season were disrupted by the unexpected resignation of Manager Paul Masters in the middle or pre-sea- son friendlies. The Club quickly filled the vacancy by appointing Petersfield Town's Manager Ian Saunders to the post.

The club started the season brightly and made it to the fourth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, beating US Portsmouth, Street and Truro City before finally succumbing to Harrow Borough. The club also had a successful run in the FA Trophy, thanks to wins against Petersfield Town, Fleet Town and Phoenix Sports before getting knocked out narrowly by Dulwich Hamlet. Craig Feeney and Howard Neighbour forced a strong strike partnership, added to that the midfield flair of Captain Stuart Green and winger, Andy Jenkinson, City recovered from a difficult spell before Christmas to mount a play-off push in the early stages of the New Year. Manager, Ian Saunders, went away with the military, and during this time, Mick Catlin stepped in to take over the running of the First-Team. When Saunders returned, form deteriorated and Saunders subsequently left the club and was replaced by Interim Manager, Craig Davis, who joined the club from Fleet Town. Davis took control of the club until the end of the season, when it was announced that he would officially be becoming Permanent First Team Manager.

‘Davo’ finished 11th with City in his first full season in charge, a season that saw a successful run, resulting in a Hampshire Senior Cup Semi-Final where City eventually lost to Blackfield & Langley. The Citizens also hosted Southampton FC in the Southampton Senior Cup and achieved memorable league victories against Didcot Town, Evesham United, Swindon Supermarine and Wimborne Town as well as impressive away draws at both Swindon Supermarine and Salisbury, the latter seeing City come from 2-0 down to salvage a point at the Raymond McEnhill Stadium.

In the 2018-19, City had an impressive pre-season including victories over Dorchester Town and Eastleigh. City started strongly in the league too. This went hand-in-hand with a cup run that saw the Citizens make it through to the 4th Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, following victories against Bourne- mouth Poppies, Frome Town, Merthyr Town and Cirencester Town before eventually losing 4-1 away at Torquay United. City’s league form dipped slightly during this period but a strong finish to the season meant that City missed out on the play-offs on the last day of the season. City needed three points away at Cinderford Town, but the game finished 0-0 meaning it was in fact Cinderford that finished in the final play-off berth.

Tyrell Mitford Joe Cook and Josh Harfield left the club during the 2019-20 pre-season and into the club have come Kieran Douglas, Keith Emmerson, Olly Balmer and Dan Williamson has returned to City. Pre-season saw victories at Ringwood Town and Hamworthy United as well as draw with Brockenhurst and Knaphill. WINCHESTER CITY Football Club PLAYER PROFILES
