Secretary’s Message

Welcome to The Enclosure today for what should be a fantastic game with RomseyTown.

We would like to remind everyone to do their bit to keep safe and ask that you respect your fellow spectators by keeping the correct distance apart, when watching the games and using the bar and tea bar. We recently had the Wessex League Vice Chairman in attendance and were complimented on how well we are doing, with the measures we have in place.

We are always on the look-out for volunteers, on a match day and during the week, so if you have a spare hour speak to any of the committee.

Hold on to your hats, buckle up and enjoy the season ahead as one thing’s for sure it’s bound to be a roller coaster – Up the Brewers.

First of all, it’s nice to be back at the Enclosure again after a few away games, hopefully everyone enjoys their visit.

I’d like to welcome the match officials and all those connected with Romsey, including their Gaffer Adam an old friend of mine from past football experiences.

I will see a different game to Adam for sure, but hopefully we both witness a really good match and it’s given the chance to show itself as a great contest as the last meeting between us ended up becoming a difficult yet valuable experience. Kevin Adair

We’ve done well so far this season against a variety of sides and a range of styles especially in the league games, our cup form hasn’t lived up to last years but that’s how it goes sometimes.

Everyone has had game time and it’s always pleasing to make progress in the cups, but our focus has always been the league season this time around.

In purely football terms, Romsey have brought in a new-look side and Adam will have them playing his style of football – one which brought him success in the past.

It takes time to do that, something Adam will hopefully be given and which I am also given; there will be tough times ahead but if the clubs support people like us then I’m sure things will continue to improve on a playing level for both teams.

On that note, I’m very grateful to Nigel and the board for their support and was glad to be given another opportunity this season.

I’ve not finished the job I want to do here – there are things we need to improve and one of the many good characteristics we have at the club is a willingness to keep adapting to different situations and especially the ability to adapt to different set ups in and amongst the senior sides we have here.

We learned valuable lessons last season and today we get another chance to show that we’ve improved and used them to make us even stronger.

One thing I wanted to mention in this column is the comments and messages that people have been sending me over various social media platforms, it really does give myself and the team a lift when we hear good things being said.

We’re trying our best in these strange times and we also appreciate everyone’s patience towards those volunteers who help get match days on here at the enclosure.

A big thanks goes to all those that make these matches possible.

I honestly believe that this football club has all the attributes and personnel of one that can push on to higher levels.

If coming to games has helped anyone through what has been such a difficult time then that’s as valuable to us knowing we are bringing the local community together as possibly 3 points today will be.

Hopefully it turns out to be a good day result wise for us and an added bonus of a decent game to watch would be good at the same time.

Thank you again for your support.

Keep Attacking.

WHAT’S THE best goal you’ve seen live? Not necessarily your favourite or one that meant the most, saw your club win something or, dare I say it, avoid relegation. But the best.

Football is subjective. One person’s best goal might not be to the taste of another’s. Some prefer mazy By Matt Badcock runs. Others think there’s nothing better than a long range strike that crashes in off the underside of the bar.

We’re fortunate we get to see more Non-League goals than we ever did. Now wonder strikes from across the country are only a few clicks away, be it on the club’s website, YouTube channel or social media. Often we will see a goal just moments after the game has finished.

It used to be waiting to buy the end of season club video to re-live those moments that could have occurred months earlier. Was it quite as good as you remembered? Was it really that far out? Did the keeper really have no chance?

One that will always live long in my memory was a strike by Michael Warner for Farnborough Town against Heybridge Swifts. A headed clearance fell out of the sky to customary cries of ‘SHOOT!’

Often the instruction to take aim is swiftly followed by groans as the ball sails off target, troubling parked vehicles in the car park more than the goalkeeper.

But this day, Warner’s effort was a dream. Like a tracer missile the ball rocketed into the top corner. Two goalkeepers wouldn’t have saved it. It was brilliant. These days it would have gone ‘viral’ and been retweeted thousands of times on twitter.

Technology has certainly made our annual Goal of the Season at The NLP’s National Game Awards more competitive than ever.

More and more nominations roll in each year, all worthy winners from all different levels of the game. In years gone by, these goals would be the stuff of myth and legend. Now the tangible proof is there.

I was fortunate enough to be at the National League North Eliminator game between Brackley Town and Gateshead a few months ago. Fans weren’t allowed in the grounds. That was a shame for loyal supporters as it is but even more so when Shane Byrne pulled a spectacular rabbit out of the hat on the stroke of half-time.

Gateshead had just gone one up deep in first-half stoppage time and looked for all the world to be heading into the break in front. But Byrne, apparently, had other ideas. Receiving the ball from kick- off inside his own half, the midfielder hit an inch perfect ball that flew right into the top corner.

Gateshead keeper Brad James had no chance. It wasn’t like he’d been caught unawares not concentrating.

It left the handful of people inside the ground open-mouthed. A wow moment. The only problem for me being, I didn’t fully see it. I was taking notes down from the first goal. Who shoots direct from kick-off!? I saw it in the air from a long way out, I saw it arrow into the net. I saw 80 per cent of it. But I didn’t see the actual strike itself.

So does it count as my best goal witnessed live? It’s certainly the best one I nearly saw! How can you support us?

If you would like to help Alton Football Club please email [email protected] Alton Football Club The club was formed by the merger of Alton Town FC and Alton United Youth FC in 2016.

Previously the club was formed in 1990 when Alton’s two senior clubs, Alton Town and Bass Alton, amalgamated. Alton Town had been fantastically successful, winning everything in Hampshire in the period from 1948 to 1956 including Hampshire leagues Divisions 3, 2 & 1 (1948, 1949 & 1958), the Hampshire Intermediate Cup in 1949, the Russell Cotes Cup in 1949 and the in 1958.

Alton Town first joined the Hampshire League in 1947 and won Division 3 East in their first season. More success followed with the Division 2 title in 1948/49 and they also won the Russell Cotes Cup and Hampshire Intermediate Cup that year. Although they dropped to Division 2 for one season in 1954/55, they bounced back immediately and went on to win both the Division 1 championship and the Hampshire Senior Cup in 1957/58. They stayed in Division 1 until they left in 1973 to join the Athenian League Division 2 which they won in their first year. After an initial period of success in that league the Club found itself unable to compete and dropped down to the Combined Counties League before returning to the Hampshire League in 1984, starting at the bottom in Division 3. They found themselves in Division 2 in 1986/87 by dint if winning the Division 2 title for the third time.

Bass Alton started life as Courage & Company (Alton) FC and joined the Hampshire League in 1928/29. The following year they were in Division 2 and then won promotion to Division 1 where they stayed until being relegated to Division 2 in 1938/39, just before the club was disbanded for the War.

Courage rejoined the North Hants division briefly in 1954/55 before beginning their longest spell in the County League in 1972/73 when they entered Division 4. Promoted to Division 3 in 1975, they only lasted two years before dropping to Division 4 again. In 1979/80 the Club changed its name to Bass Alton FC and its fortunes changed with the name as they won promotion in successive years to Division 3 in 1979/80, to Division 2 in 1980/81 and to Division 1 as Division 2 runners-up and the end of the 1982/83 season after a 45-year absence.

Since the amalgamation, the Club has played in the Hampshire League and achieved promotion to the Wessex League by topping the Premier Division in 2002, moving to the Premier Division of the Cherry Red Records Combined Counties League from season 2013- 14 and moved back to the Wessex League from season 2015-16.
