PROMOTION FROM STEP 7

We hear that four Premier League clubs have lodged their intention to move up to Step 6 next season. Bush Hill, Fleetlands, Infinity and Stockbridge are the clubs involved. The full list from the FA hasn’t been received yet, but we also hear rumours that Dorchester Sports and Hamworthy Recreation from the Dorset Premier League have acted similarly, but this is very much subject to official confirmation. Hopefully all this will become clearer before too long. Good luck to all those involved.

PROGRAMME COMPETITION

Clubs are reminded that it is a league requirement, that they MUST produce a programme for each home First Team game in the FA Cup, FA Vase, County Senior Cup, League and League Cup- and with that in mind a timely reminder again that we are running the Programme competition again this season. To enter simply send one League or League Cup programme produced for a game in December or January to the Newsletter Editor at the following address please. SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 27

As we stumble headlong into a new year, a new decade; the above is a brief look at how our Premier and Division One tables looked at 1 January 2010. Interesting to note that Division One shows more stability as it were with ten of the 21 still performing in the same division, but only just as there are eight still in the Premier then as opposed to now. Seven have dropped from the Premier to Division One and four have travelled in the opposite direction- AFC Portchester, Horndean, Shaftesbury and Tadley Calleva. A few clubs missing back then who have settled in with us, but we have lost seven going out of the trapdoor- either voluntarily or through FA intervention- Hayling United and Stockbridge are in the , the latter have lodged their intention to seek promotion with the FA, so could possibly come back on board next term. AFC Aldermaston are currently in the Hellenic League, Brading Town ply their trade in the Isle of Wight leagues, Farnborough North End in the Aldershot league, Fleet Spurs in Combined Counties Division One and Warminster Town as one or two of our teams know from this season’s Buildbase FA Vase experiences are in Western Division One. Moving upwards, none of our Division One sides then have gone beyond our level, but five have from the Premier Division. Blackfield & Langley, Poole Town and Wimborne Town are current members of the Southern League Premier Division. Moneyfields and Winchester City sit one rung above us in the Southern Division. There were four teams yet to bag the three points in a home fixture, Cowes Sports, Laverstock & Ford and New Milton Town in the Premier Division and AFC Aldermaston in Division One. All teams had lost at least once in home games. On a goals per game analysis, Poole Town led the way in the Premier with 2.909 goals per game, with Wimborne Town on 2.318 and Bournemouth on 2.308. This was topped though by Fawley who had amassed some 75 goals which came out as a staggering 3.750 goals per game in Division One. United Services were in second on 2.818 whilst AFC Portchester were ranked third with 2.611. Poole Town and Fawley also topped the points per game chart for the two Divisions with the former on 2.500 and the latter on 2.400. Bemerton topped the table as we started the decade but it was second placed Poole Town who eventually collected the Premier Division title amassing 109 points in the process. The Harlequins finished 3rd with Wimborne Town pinching the runners up spot. In Division One, Fawley’s form saw them some five points clear at the turn of the year, but that lead was reeled in and overtaken at the end of the season, when Hamble ASSC collected the accolades with 85 points as against the Oilers’ 82. AFC Aldermaston remained rooted to the foot of the table and ended with just 4 points.

THE FLEET IS IN

A look back at one of our “new” Clubs for this season though one with a Wessex League pedigree who we were, and are, pleased to welcome back in to the fold. Fleet Town were formed in 1890 and have been resident at their present Calthorpe Park Ground since 1923 but for the sake of this exercise we will move on to the late nineteen seventies when they were members of the Hampshire League. Between then and initially joining the Wessex League in 1989-90 they also played in the Athenian League, the Combined Counties League and the last two years in the Chiltonian League. The Athenian League saw visits to such diverse places as Harwich & Parkeston on the East Coast and Thatcham Town, whilst the Chiltonian League contained the likes of Coopers Payen, Broomwade Sports, Molins Sports and Hazells who may, or may not be, still in existence. The two Leagues mentioned have long since gone. The Wessex League in 1989/90, Fleet Town’s first season, contained such as Wimborne Town, AFC Totton, Thatcham Town and Eastleigh, who have all moved on to higher things, and Fleet finished eighteenth out of nineteen but over the next five seasons improved to such an extent that they were League Champions in 1994/95 and promoted to the Southern League. Their cumulative record over those six seasons reads:- Sunday, 05 January 2020 Page 5 of 25

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 27

PL W D L F A Pts 234 105 44 85 422 340 359

They also, in their final season, recorded a 15-0 victory on Boxing Day which remains to this day the record for the Competition. After five seasons in the Southern League they returned to the Wessex League for seasons 2000/01 and 2001/02 and after two successful campaigns, in which they finished fourth and second, they returned to the Southern League. Those two seasons added together produce the following figures:-

PL W D L F A Pts 88 58 12 18 198 115 185

One point was deducted in the second season, for reasons unknown at this point in time, which was to nearly cost them dear. By a quirk of the fixtures they played Andover Town at home on the last Saturday of the season with the visitors one point ahead at the top of the table. The two Clubs fought out a one all draw in front of, from memory, a crowd in excess of six hundred, maintaining the status quo as far as the League was concerned. But Andover declined promotion and Fleet took their place. On the Cups front the Club has twice reached the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, losing to AFC Totton and Havant & Waterlooville, and the Second Round Proper of the FA Vase on more than one occasion, though the result that stands out in their Vase record is a six four defeat at home by Swanage & Herston. Since that last promotion and because of their geographical location they have moved back and forth between the Southern and Isthmian Leagues until returning to us this season where they’ve settled well with hopes no doubt of climbing the Pyramid again in the future.

BLAST FROM THE PAST- 15 YEARS AGO

In another spot of nostalgia, there were just the two games played on 4 January 2005 when we had a three Division league, with the majority of games scheduled and played the day prior. Sholing in their previous guise of VTFC beat AFC Totton 4-1 at their Portsmouth Road ground, whilst Bournemouth bagged the points in a 1-0 victory at Hurn Bridge over Christchurch courtesy of a Zouaoui Lammali goal in front of some 117 spectators. Sorry, but I don’t have the scorers or attendance details for the other game. VT’s win saw them go tenth, one place and two points behind Bournemouth and AFC Totton, whilst Christchurch languished in 18th spot. At that moment in time Winchester City on 52 points from 22 games sat at the top.

FIXTURES UPDATE

The following changes to the February fixture list have been made. This still leaves 9 Premier and 6 Division One fixtures with dates to be added and most of these fixtures involve long distance travel. Our Fixtures Secretary will try to fit these in on a Saturday but just for advance notice some of them may move to Easter Monday (April 13th).

JUST A THOUGHT – OR TWO!

On the last Saturday of the year a chance to do something that is a rarity these days – see two matches on the same day. The intention was to go to Farnham for the Combined Counties fixture with Jersey Bulls the visitors for a 12:30 kick off and then a twenty minute drive down the A31 for Alton against Verwood. But sadly it became a case of “The Best Laid Plans of Mice and Men”. Having battled my way round the town’s one way system I arrived at the ground just after 11:30 and found a few friendly faces only to be soon informed that Jersey had experienced flight problems and the kick off would be delayed but would have to be by 13:30 to allow the visitors to get home. They experienced more problems on the M25 and at 13:28 a coach pulled up, the players, already changed, jogged on to the pitch and kicked off immediately – no warm up whatsoever – the half time was five minutes, they won two nil, their 20th win in 20 matches, and were back on the coach and away before I had reached my car. Thankfully they made the flight home avoiding the possibility of trying to find an overnight stay. This, to be fair, is the first time they have experienced such problems, but even without same it speaks volumes for the dedication of the players since for away matches with lunchtime kick-offs they probably need to be at Jersey Airport at 07:00 for what will always be at least a twelve hour day. So, apologies to Alton but at least all were spared the usual sub-standard report in the Newsletter. Returning to the subject of commitment it is intermittently a problem to all Clubs and an unfair burden on those that work so hard for the Clubs. It obviously has to be accepted that there will be times when family or work has to take precedence but surely if a player signs for a Club it is because he wants to play week in, week out. In the vast majority of cases players do adopt that attitude but Clubs do frequently have problems Sunday, 05 January 2020 Page 12 of 25

going to the Island (let alone Jersey) or when things are not going well, as has been seen on a couple of occasions this season, and no thought is seemingly given to the people who work so hard on the non-playing side. Reverting back to Jersey, when Godalming went over there recently, they could only get twelve players to make the trip. One would have thought they would have been queuing up to play! Just last Saturday in the Hellenic League the local derby between Abingdon United and Abingdon Town had to be abandoned at half time. The visitors were eight nil down at that point and apparently objected to being criticised by Club Officials – it is difficult to see that any praise can be warranted given the situation – so they threw their kit on the floor and went home. Unfortunately, it is the Club that will suffer punishment, not the players. Last word on a problem where there seems no answer relates to a Step Seven game in the north of the County. The players came back in to the dressing rooms following the pre-match warm-up and one player began to get changed. When questioned as to why he said, “his girlfriend had missed the bus to go shopping so he had to take her”. How do you deal with or justify that? Any thoughts on the matter and the last sentence of the following paragraph will be welcome. A slight change of subject and mention again of the very good attendances at most of our Matches on Saturday – the attendance at Farnham was 232, four or five times their average – and whilst the absence of any Southern League Football helped, it is good to see so many of our Clubs advertising their matches very professionally on Social Media and hopefully reaping some benefit. A personal thought on the subject – and I stress “personal”. Should we not give some thought to playing on Boxing Day next season? A very Happy New Year to All.

REGISTRATIONS

Clubs will have been sent invoices for their player registrations for the first part of the season, so payments are now expected. Please be prompt. Some interesting reading in the amounts and the numbers involved- a total of £8,940.00 is due to the League with £4,402 of that in the Premier Division with 934 player registrations and 64 transfers and 996 registrations and 62 transfers in Division One amounting to £4,538. In the Premier Division, AFC Portchester and Horndean lead the way as far as bringing in players are concerned with AFC Stoneham and Portland United with the least. With transfers Hamworthy United have been the most active whilst as a total the Dorset side are top of the list with Horndean, Amesbury Town and Lymington Town also featuring towards the top of the list. Baffins Milton Rovers and Portland United have the least expenditure for players this season to date. In Division One, United Services Portsmouth and Folland Sports lead the rankings on player registrations, with Bemerton Heath Harlequins the most active in the transfer market. Consequently, Bemerton and Follands lead the way on money due. Andover New Street and Petersfield Town are at the foot of the table as far as player activity is concerned. Out of all 40 clubs involved (including Pewsey Vale) only Alton have yet to record a transfer payment.

WEEKEND MATCH REPORTS

Roger Allen writes BASHLEY 0-3 AMESBURY TOWN With their Manager absent in hospital with appendicitis and on a run of 10 consecutive League defeats playing a side that had won its last 7 home games - this game was a home banker for Bashley on paper. However this didn't account for a determined performance by Amesbury who went home with their first away win of the season. For Bashley - I can't remember a side that squandered so many chances - most going wide but Jordan Tewkesbury didn't have any difficult saves to make. The nearest they came to scoring was early on when Harry McGrath had the ball in the net but he had already been flagged offside. Bashley did have the bulk of possession but Amesbury clearly didn't come to the New Forest to be rolled over. In midfield both Bradley Doyle and Owen Holloway were working hard to nullify Bashley's attacks. Against the run of play the away side took the lead on 36 minutes from a free kick from 30 yards taken by DOYLE. The shot was well hit and bounced just in front of Dan Kempson in the Bashley goal. Assuming he wasn't unsighted the keeper might have done better to keep out the shot. HT 0-1 Bashley opened the second half with more determination no doubt spurred on by the half time team talk and for the first few minutes took the game to Amesbury. However on 53 minutes they fell further behind again from a set piece. This time it was a Jack Francis corner that went to the far post for Zak PICKETT to head in from a narrow angle. Bashley continued to waste chance after chance but as the game wore on the Amesbury defence became more assured. At its heart Pickett had a fine game - his contribution wasn't pretty but it was effective both physically and the way he organised other players around him. As the game ran down into stoppage time it had already become clear that this wasn't going to be Bashley's day and Amesbury added insult to injury when they scored a third goal - the best of the match. With Bashley over committed to attack FRANCIS was able to advance through midfield to the edge of the penalty area and unleash a fierce cross shot that gave Kempson no chance. Too early to say that Amesbury have turned a corner but, if they continue to put in this amount of effort, they will be rewarded with more points. Bashley have a whole series of cup games on the horizon and this might prove a welcome distraction from having to display consistency in the League. FT 0-3

John Gorman writes ANDOVER NEW STREET 6-3 TOTTON & ELING Whether there is any Calendar anywhere or any Country’s folk lore that makes mention of a Saint Rafa’s day is unknown but one suspects that January 4th may well go down in the future Annals of New Street under that name after the events at Foxcotte Park on the opening Saturday of the New Year and Decade. recent signing “Rafa” Ramos, in only his second game for the Club, scored almost certainly the first goal of the year in the Sydenhams League, probably the first hat trick and undoubtedly, in cricketing terms, the first “five-for” as he claimed the first five goals in the home side’s six three defeat of Totton & Eling. For good measure he also hit the post and had another effort ruled out (correctly) for a marginal offside. It should also be added that in his previous appearance on the ground this season he scored a hat trick in Brockenhurst’s six one win in the Russell-Cotes Cup. The game kicked off at 3.00 – long may that practice continue in the coming year – and within sixty seconds the home side were a goal ahead. Skipper Matt Scott lifted the ball down the middle, Jazz Beavis nodded it on and RAMOS outpaced and out muscled the defender before beating the advancing goalkeeper. By the time the five minute mark was reached the striker could have had a hat trick as he was firstly denied by keeper Oli Eyres’ legs and then struck the inside of the post with the ball coming back in to play. The visitors James Matthews, who troubled the home defence all afternoon, was inches too high after a good run and then saw a dangerous cross well cut out by Scott. Totton were seeing more of the play in midfield without causing too much threat on goal before suddenly levelling the scores just after the half’s midway point. The ball was worked down the left flank and the low cross was seemingly left by the defenders to each other, nobody moved, and Harry BURNS turned the ball home at the far post. Street had lost their way slightly but looked to be extremely unfortunate when Lock burst in to the area and was stopped by the simple expedient of the defender laying both hands in the middle of his back and pushing him over. The referee, a matter of yards away, gave nothing but seconds later penalised the same defender for a “nothing” challenge just outside the area and added a caution for good measure. The phrase “two wrongs make a right” rather comes to mind. Eyres confidently held the free kick under the angle of post and bar and Ramos was only inches wide after neat play by Alex Dockree and Lock created the opening. Then came the last five minutes of the half which saw three goals and some controversy. Firstly a carbon copy of the opening goal, other than it was Dockree who provided the initial pass, saw RAMOS put the home side ahead only for MATTHEWS to break clear on the right and confidently fire across the keeper in to the far corner to bring the scores level again. The referee was then looking at his watch as RAMOS broke clear, went around the keeper and appeared to tread on and then fall on the ball as it crossed the line. The Totton defenders were adamant that there had been a hand ball but after consulting his assistant the referee gave the goal. In all honesty it was probably difficult for anyone to see clearly as to what happened and full back Dan Steer’s over protestations earned him an extended break with ten minutes in the sin bin. HT 3-2 Having scored inside the opening minute in the first half it took RAMOS four minutes to add to his tally after the break when he rose unchallenged to head home a Jason Silver corner. Four minutes later it was five two as RAMOS completed his nap hand with an even better header, rising above everybody to head home a free kick from the right. New Street introduced another new, but well known, signing in Reece Rusher to the fray and the game got rather bogged down in midfield. The visitors belied their League position but lacked any real or constant threat in front of goal, though Matthews shaved the outside of the post from the edge of the area and it was virtually stoppage time before the scoreline was completed. Firstly Max ALLEN fastened on to a through ball from Luke Hooper to make it six before an unquestioned penalty at the other end was converted by Dan GAIN. Overall a determined effort by Totton and Eling and three more points for New Street but it was Rafa’s Day and the first time I have seen anyone score five since Justin Bennett for Andover many years ago – and two of his five were penalties. FT 6-3

NOTE: [*] indicates a points adjustment has been made against this team. We’ll start in Dorset, where Hamworthy Recreation maintained their 100% winning start with a 3-1 win over Weymouth based Balti Sports. Second placed Gillingham Town came unstuck at Corfe Castle where the hosts won 2-0 at The Fortress. Merley Cobham Sports made hard work of their 1-0 win over a plucky Sturminster Newton side and elsewhere Dorchester Sports and Holt United shared the points and two goals. Heading east Infinity extended their lead at the top of the Hampshire Premier with a 6-1 win over Clanfield and with Bush Hill in Hampshire Senior Trophy action, Paulsgrove closed the gap in third with a 5-0 win over Locks Heath. Hayling United won by the odd goal in five at Fleetlands and Stockbridge fell to a 2-1defeat at Liss. Wiltshire leaders Wroughton dropped points in a 1-1 draw with Stratton Juniors as did Corsham Town who were held at home by Marlborough Town. Shrewton United scored twice without reply at Purton and

Kintbury also closed in with a 3-1 victory over Cricklade. In the Wiltshire Senior Cup, Calne Town needed extra time and a penalty shoot-out to see off Trowbridge Town to advance to the Semi Final stage. Due to various cup competitions taking place, in the Wyvern League the only league game played saw Fareham and Stoneham share four goals at Cams Alders. Looking upwards in the Southern League Division One South- AFC Totton and Winchester City shared the points in a goalless draw and Sholing won 6-1 against Basingstoke Town. Dan Mason bagging a hat trick for the Boatmen. Thatcham Town won by the odd goal in seven against visitors Moneyfields. In the Premier Division, Blackfield & Langley saw off Yate Town 2-0 at Gang Warily with former Solent University striker Hisham Kasimu notching both. Wimborne Town shared four goals and the points at Hartley Wintney, sadly the Magpies were rocked on New Years Day with the sudden passing of Chief Steward Kevin Hart who collapsed prior to their game at Cuthbury against Poole Town before being rushed to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital- given several of our teams will have met him upon arrival at the ground in the recent past, and on behalf of the League, we send our sincere condolences to family and friends. In their first home game for a considerable length of time, Poole Town beat Farnborough 3-1 at Tatnam. Gosport went down 3-2 at Taunton whilst Salisbury won by the odd goal in five at home against Chesham United.

CLUB NEWS

Christmas has to a certain extent been a quiet spell across the clubs, but we do note one transfer and that’s Ronan Moore moving down the A337 from Brockenhurst to Lymington Town; and a dual registration at Dorchester Town, where Laverstock & Ford’s Archie Lovegrove has signed on the dotted line. Pictured left, Ringwood Town have reported that their sit-on mower was stolen on Friday 3 January at around 04:45. If you see or hear anything about one being available to buy, please do not hesitate to get in touch with the club directly. We hear of a vacancy at Verwood Town, where they require a First Team Coach - Due to a change in work circumstances, the First Team Coach is standing down and therefore a vacancy has now arisen for a new First Team Coach. Please contact Team manager Adie Arnold in the first instance 07973 957708. AFC Portchester have strengthened their squad with the signing of defender Lewis Tallack and midfielder Sam Lanahan, and Matt Simm has signed on at Fareham Town from AFC Totton.

WEEK TWENTY THREE ROUND UP

For the first time in more weeks than one cares to remember every scheduled fixture was played with the weather for once taking a back seat, and the first Saturday of the New Year threw up more than one unexpected result in both Divisions- and thanks to all those who provided responses. In the top of the table clash in the Premier Division a late reversal of the fixture due to their floodlight issue didn’t seem to affect AFC Stoneham with a Scott Hills goal, the only one of the game, giving them victory at Alresford and cutting the points gap between the two to three points. AFC Portchester made it five wins in their last five matches on the road (or water) with a 3-1 win at Cowes Sports helped by two Steve Ramsay penalties but Christchurch lost for the first time in eight going down 2-0 at Fleet Town, a good win for the home side courtesy of goals from Sam Williams and Aaron Redford. Lymington have climbed in to fifth place following an impressive four one win at Baffins Milton Rovers – two goals for Ali Zintany – a fifth successive victory while Baffins, though rueing the loss, will no doubt be happy to have got a game under their belt following recent postponements.

Nathan Lynch scored twice in Hamble Club’s 4-2 defeat of Shaftesbury and both Horndean and Fareham Town improved their positions in the top ten. The Deans beat Portland 3-1 - Bobby Scott among the scorers – while goals from Jack Benfield and Lewis Stockford saw Fareham take all three points at Bournemouth. Portland, with only one win in their last six, have now dropped to ninth place. The largest crowd of the day, after finally discovering the one that was awaited, was at Bashley and included League Chairman Ian Hoare as he continues his welcome recovery. Undoubtedly the majority of those present were of a Bashley inclination and they would have been disappointed as bottom of the table Amesbury battled their way to a much deserved 3-0 victory. A welcome tonic for all involved at the Wiltshire Club, especially manager Carl Poore, currently side lined with appendicitis. Hamworthy, after a seeming upsurge, went down 3-1 at home to Tadley for whom Julian Goater scored twice, though neither side finished with a full complement of players. Lastly a welcome win for Brockenhurst, only their second in their last ten matches, as goals from Freddy Bullard and Toby Bailey gave them the points at Solent University. The top game in the First Division went the same way as the top of the table clash in the Premier with victory for the away side as Hythe & Dibden completed the double over leaders US Portsmouth with a best of five goals win at Burnaby Road. Mig Dark scored against his former side for the visitors whilst James Franklyn notched his almost customary goal for the home side. Alton’s seven match winning run was ended by Newport with a 3-1 win at Anstey with three different scorers for the Islanders who are pushing hard to join the promotion race. Downton kept in touch with a lone goal win over Andover Town – Tom Moseley the scorer – but perhaps the side to watch are Andover New Street who have games in hand on all those around them and defeated Totton & Eling by six goals to three with Rafa Ramos scoring five including one in the opening minute, surely the first Sydenhams goal of the new decade. Bemerton’s poor away record continued with a 4-2 defeat at Fawley who at last gained some reward for their performances. It was another game where both sides finished with reduced numbers of personnel and the goals were shared around. Four different names on the home score sheet whilst Justin Bennett and Ben Dillon netted for Bemerton. Dillon has been playing for, and running, Tadley Reserves and recently was reported to have signed for Cove in the Combined Counties League whilst Bennett signed for Blackfield in the week before Christmas. Nothing wrong at all but Football is a funny world sometimes nowadays. East Cowes Vics and Whitchurch shared two goals and the points at Whippingham, probably a better result for the home side, and Petersfield ensured Follands woes continued with a five goal win at Hamble, two goals apiece for Matt Lowe and Will Webb, while Romsey made it three wins in a row with a 4-1 win at New Milton with the goals equally shared between Liam Magee and James Clifton. The highest scorers of the day were Laverstock & Ford with seven at Verwood whose miserable home form continued. Russ Jones scored four and Chae Sykes a hat trick for the winners while Lee Vint scored one of the two home goals, At the end of this rare day when all fixtures were played the same two sides head the respective Divisions but competition for the top places is ever strengthening in both cases. Alresford now lead AFC Stoneham by three points with AFC Portchester a point further back but the Eastleigh based side have two games in hand, whilst in Division One US Portsmouth head Hythe & Dibden and Alton by a single point.
